We present what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first pure-three-level Yb:Ca4 GdO(BO3 )3 (Yb:GdCOB) laser emitting at 976 nm based on the F5/2 2-F27/2 transition, generally used for a quasi-three-level emission at 1032 nm. A maximum power of 782 mW at 976 nm has been achieved in continuous-wave (CW) operation pumped by a quasi-three-level Nd:SrLaAlO4 laser emitting at 902 nm. Moreover, a self-frequency-doubling CW blue laser has also been demonstrated with a maximum power of 133 mW at 488 nm.

The reductive formylation of aryl iodides/bromides to aryl aldehydes using CO2 /H2 is presented for the first time. It was realized over a catalytic system composed of RhI3 or RhI3 /Pd(dppp)Cl2 (dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenyphosphino)propane) and PPh3 in the presence of Ac2 O/Et3 N at 100 °C, affording aromatic aldehydes in good to excellent yields, together with good functional-group tolerance and broad substrate scope. The reaction proceeds through three cascade steps, involving HCOOH formation, CO release, and formylation of aryl halides...

We describe an open-source computational toolkit (AARON: An Automated Reaction Optimizer for New catalysts) that automates the quantum mechanical geometry optimization and characterization of the transition state and intermediate structures required to predict the activities and selectivities of asymmetric catalytic reactions. Modern computational quantum chemistry has emerged as a powerful tool for explaining the selectivity and activity of asymmetric catalysts. However, reliably predicting the stereochemical outcome of realistic reactions often requires the geometry optimization of hundreds of transition state and intermediate structures, which is a tedious process...

BACKGROUND: For the functional control of prosthetic hand, it is insufficient to obtain only the motion pattern information. As far as practicality is concerned, the control of the prosthetic hand force is indispensable. The application value of prosthetic hand will be greatly improved if the stable grip of prosthetic hand can be achieved. To address this problem, in this study, a bio-signal control method for grasping control of a prosthetic hand is proposed to improve patient's sense of using prosthetic hand and the thus improving the quality of life...

Primary porcine bronchial epithelial cells (PBECs) are an ideal model to study the molecular and pathogenic mechanisms of various porcine respiratory pathogens. However, the short lifespan of primary PBECs greatly limit their application. Here, we isolated and cultured primary PBECs and established immortalized PBECs by transfecting primary PBECs with the pEGFP-hTERT recombinant plasmid containing human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT). Immortalized PBECs (hTERT-PBECs) retained the morphological and functional features of primary PBECs as indicated by cytokeratin 18 expression, telomerase activity assay, proliferation assays, karyotype analysis, and quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction...

Gut microbiome communicates with the host liver to modify hepatic xenobiotic biotransformation and nutrient homeostasis. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are persistent environmental contaminants that are detected in fatty food, household dust, and human breast milk at worrisome levels. Recently, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been recognized as novel biomarkers for toxicological responses and may regulate the transcriptional/translational output of protein-coding genes (PCGs). However, very little is known regarding to what extent the interactions between PBDEs and gut microbiome modulate hepatic lncRNAs and PCGs, and what critical signaling pathways are impacted at the transcriptomic scale...

The adaptive coordination of trust services can provide highly dependable and personalized solutions for industrial requirements in the service-oriented industrial internet of things (IIoT) architecture to achieve efficient utilization of service resources. Although great progress has been made, trust service coordination still faces challenging problems such as trustless industry service, poor coordination, and quality of service (QoS) personalized demand. In this paper, we propose a QoS-driven and adaptive trust service coordination method to implement Pareto-efficient allocation of limited industrial service resources in the background of the IIoT...

Valorization of organic-rich waste stream to lactic acid by the mixed microbial consortium has attracted tremendous research interests in recent years. In this study, thermal pretreatment was involved in co-fermentation of food waste (FW) and waste activated sludge (WAS) to enhance lactic acid production. First, sole FW was observed as the most suitable substrate employing thermal pretreatment for the generation of lactic acid. The fermentation time for reaching the maximal plateau was significantly shortened at a corresponding thermal pretreatment temperature...

Despite many reports of the use of biodegradation to remove contaminants, the biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is challenging because of the hydrophobicities and low aqueous solubilities of most PAHs. In this study, phenanthrene (PHE) was used as a sole carbon and energy source to screen and identify Achromobacter sp. LH-1 for the production of biodemulsifiers that enhance the bioavailability and solubilization of PAHs. LH-1 achieved a 94% degradation rate and a 40% mineralization rate with 100 mg/L PHE...

Low efficiency of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) embryos is largely attributable to imperfect reprogramming of the donor nucleus. The differences in epigenetic reprogramming between female and male buffalo cloned embryos remain unclear. We explored the effects of donor cell sex differences on the development of SCNT embryos. We and then compared the expression of DNA methylation (5-methylcytosine-5mC and 5-hydroxymethylcytosine-5hmC) and the expression level of relevant genes, and histone methylation (H3K9me2 and H3K9me3) level in SCNT-♀ and SCNT-♂ preimplantation embryos with in vitro fertilization (IVF) counterparts...

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy imaging (FTIRSI) combined with spectral analysis and polarization approach was creatively used to investigate both structures of bilirubin (BR) precipitate and BR aggregate at liquid-liquid interface. It was found by spectral analysis that the internal hydrogen bonds of BR molecules all broke and the dihedral angles increased during the formation of BR aggregate at liquid-liquid interface. And the BR molecule might be of layer assembly along the long axis direction of CD half-group to form J-type aggregates, which could be parallel to the direction of the transition dipole moment of BR aggregate...

Polyoxometalates (POMs) have been proven to possess intrinsic peroxidase-like activity. However, by far, most of POMs with intrinsic peroxidase-like activity are stable at acid aqueous. Herein, we firstly utilized Na10 [α-SiW9 O34 ] with the peroxidase-like property in basic pH condition to build a CdTe quantum dots (QDs)-based fluorometric method for detection of hydrogen peroxide. In the CdTe QDs stable pH value, Na10 [α-SiW9 O34 ] can catalyze the decomposition of H2 O2 into·OH radicals that could efficiently quench the fluorescence of CdTe QDs...

Random weakening of an intracranial blood vessel results in abnormal blood flow into an aneurysmal sac. Recent advancements show that an implantable flow diverter, integrated with a medical stent, enables a highly effective treatment of cerebral aneurysms by guiding blood flow into the normal vessel path. None of such treatment systems, however, offers post-treatment monitoring to assess the progress of sac occlusion. Therefore, physicians rely heavily on either angiography or magnetic resonance imaging. Both methods require a dedicated facility with sophisticated equipment settings and time-consuming, cumbersome procedures...
