This is a case of a renal transplant recipient who developed a primary hepatic Burkitt lymphoma a few years after kidney transplantation. The past medical history of the patient was significant for anti-HCV positivity with liver histopathology showing minimal changes of grades 0 and 1, stage 0. She received a graft from a deceased donor, with rabbit antithymocyte globulin and methyl-prednisolone, as induction therapy, and was maintained on azathioprine, cyclosporine, and low dose methyl-prednisolone with normal renal function...

Thiamethoxam (TMX) is a non-mutagenic neonicotinoid insecticide that is widely used to combat different types of insects. The hepatotoxicity and carcinogenicity of TMX have been approved previously in mice but not in rats. However, the TMX-induced hepatotoxic and pro-carcinogenic effects on rabbits remain unclear. The present study elucidated the roles of oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and apoptosis-related genes in the hepatotoxic and carcinogenic effects of TMX on rabbits. Sixteen male rabbits were equally divided into two groups; eight rabbits orally treated with TMX at a dose of 250 mg/kg b...

6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (6:2 FTOH; CF3[CF2]5[CH2]2OH, CAS# 647-42-7) was evaluated for acute, genetic, and subchronic toxicity using in vitro and in vivo methods. In rats, 6:2 FTOH was considered to be slightly toxic by the oral (LD50=1,750 mg/kg), and dermal (LD50 > 5,000 mg/kg) routes. In rabbits, 6:2 FTOH was not a primary skin or eye irritant, and it did not produce a dermal sensitization response in mice. In a 90-day subchronic study, 6:2 FTOH was administered to rats by oral gavage (0, 5, 25, 125, 250 mg/kg/day)...

Rabbit antithymocyte globulin (rATG) is increasingly used in nonmyeloablative hematopoetic stem cell transplant (HSCT). Elevated liver function tests (LFTs) have been reported for antithymocyte globulin in the treatment of aplastic anemia, but not when used in a conditioning regimen for HSCT. We describe two cases of patients receiving a conditioning regimen for HSCT containing rATG who developed a transient, severe transaminase elevation. In the first case, a 66-year-old woman with a history of acute myeloid leukemia received the first dose of rATG and the patient's transaminases were found to be extremely elevated within a few hours...

Induction therapy is used relatively infrequently in liver transplantation, but developments in induction regimens and strategies for their use are prompting a re-examination of its benefits. Rabbit antithymocyte globulin (rATG) induces protracted, dose-dependent lymphocytopenia with preferential reconstitution of regulatory T-lymphocytes. Non-depleting interleukin-2 receptor antagonists (IL-2RA) act selectively on activated T-lymphocytes with a shorter duration of effect. IL-2RA induction with delayed and reduced calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) exposure appears to preserve efficacy, while more aggressive CNI minimisation has been attempted successfully using rATG...

PAX8 is expressed in a high percentage of renal cell and ovarian cancers; however, the current existing anti-PAX8 rabbit polyclonal (P) antibodies also recognize B cells, pancreatic cancers, carcinoids, and some soft tissue tumors. Cross-reactivity with B cells can be especially troublesome in lymph nodes when identifying tumors of unknown origin. A new mouse monoclonal (M) anti-PAX8 antibody (Clone BC12) has been developed that recognizes PAX8 expression in a high percentage of renal cell and ovarian carcinomas, whereas exhibiting no staining of B cells...

BACKGROUND: Human growth hormone (hGH) is a complex mixture of molecular isoforms. Gaps in our knowledge exist regarding the structures and biological significances of the uncharacterized hGH molecular variants. Mercaptoethanol-resistant 45-kDa human growth hormone (MER-45 kDa hGH) is an extraordinarily stable disulfide-linked hGH homodimer whose biological significance is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the pharmacokinetic abilities of dimeric MER-45-kDa hGH to bind to GH and prolactin (PRL) receptors and to elucidate its abilities to stimulate cell proliferation in lactogen-induced and somatogen-induced in vitro cell proliferation bioassays...

Vascular tumours are common lesions of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, but also occur in many other tissues and internal organs. The well-differentiated tumours consist of irregular anastomosing, blood-filled vascular channels that are lined by variably atypical endothelial cells. The less differentiated tumours may show solid strands and sheets, resembling carcinoma or lymphoma. Several growth factors, including basic fibroblast growth factor, transforming growth factors and vascular endothelial growth factor, play a role in tumour angiogenesis...

The beta-glucans isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) enhance the innate immune system, but there is little evidence for its antitumor activity. To examine the antitumor and immunostimulating activities of beta-glucan (IS-2) purified from mutated S. cerevisiae, we made an experiment on innate immune response against metastasis of cancer cells by comparing with the beta-glucan from wild-type S. cerevisiae. In experimental lung metastasis of colon 26-M3.1 carcinoma or B16-BL6 melanoma cells, prophylactic administration of beta-glucan purified from mutated S...

Larvae of Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) and Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann) were reared on liver tissues from a rabbit that had a malignant tumor in the thoracic cavity. Larval rearing of both blowfly species was conducted at ambient temperature. Larvae that fed on tissues from the rabbit with the tumor developed at significantly faster rates than those feeding on tissues from the control animal.

We recently cloned mouse Thy28 cDNA (mThy28), which is highly conserved among vertebrates and plants. The mThy28 mRNA is highly expressed in testis, liver, kidney, brain, with moderate expression in thymus, spleen, and heart. In the present study, characteristics of mouse Thy28 protein expression were examined using rabbit anti-mThy28 polyclonal antibody (Ab). Levels of mThy28 protein expression were highest in testis, with moderate expression in liver, spleen, and thymus. The Thy28 protein was mainly located in the nucleus, which was revealed by immunofluorescence microscopy and Western blotting using anti-mThy28 Ab, and transient expression of the mThy28/EGFP fusion gene...

Conjugates made by coupling diazotized arsanilic acid with one or another of a variety of proteins regularly brought about the complete regression of established 6C3HED lymphomas in living mice without perceptibly harming the latter, while untreated control animals regularly died with lymphomatosis. Histologic studies made plain that the lymphoma cells promptly die in mice treated with the arsenic-azoproteins, while those in untreated control animals continue to proliferate. Various inorganic and organic arsenicals (including arsanilic acid and 4-arsonophenyldiazotate) were essentially devoid of effect on the lymphoma cells in vivo, and this proved true as well of the proteins employed (serum albumins and globulins procured from several species, casein, and ovalbumin)...

Immune serums prepared in rabbits with antigens made from normal mouse organs and tissues that were presumably devoid of large numbers of lymphocytic cells (notably kidney, liver, brain, whole embryos, and erythrocytes) proved lethal for the cells of several transplanted mouse lymphomas in vitro in the presence of complement; but these immune serums, when given intraperitoneally in large amounts to susceptible mice that had been implanted subcutaneously with lymphoma cells of one or another of several types, failed entirely to inhibit growth of the lymphoma cells in vivo...

The HCA587 gene, identified by serological analysis of recombinant cDNA expression library (SEREX) from a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patient, encodes a new member of cancer-testis antigens. HCA587 mRNA expression in normal tissues and cancers has been previously reported. To estimate its immunogenicity to induce immune response, it is essential to analyze HCA587 expression at the protein level. In this study anti-HCA587 polyclonal antibody, termed "TC-1," was generated, and the expression of HCA587 protein was assessed by immunohistochemical staining in a panel of normal and tumor tissue sections...

AIMS: Angiogenesis is an important factor in tumour growth and metastasis. Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) or KDR plays a crucial role in angiogenesis. The aim of this study was to raise and characterize antibodies against phosphorylated KDR which could be used for studies on human tissues to assess KDR activation and novel inhibitors of KDR activation in clinical trials. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three monoclonal antibodies and one rabbit polyclonal antiserum were produced...

A 39-year-old male underwent a nonmyeloablative stem cell transplant (NMAPBPCT) from his HLA-matched sister for recurrent anaplastic large cell lymphoma in CR-2, receiving fludarabine, cyclophosphamide, and rabbit antithymocyte globulin for the preparative therapy. The patient was readmitted on day+33 for persistent culture-negative fevers. He rapidly developed marked elevations of alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin. Liver biopsy showed a periportal infiltrate of large immunoblastic appearing cells. The tumor cells did not stain for CD3/CD20/CD30 and alk protein, but did stain for CD79a/LCA and CD43...

We have previously identified the oncogene rgr (ralGDS related) in DNA derived from a rabbit squamous cell carcinoma. Here we describe the identification of the human orthologue of the rabbit rgr gene termed hrgr (human ralGDS related). Four alternatively spliced full-length hrgr transcripts were isolated from normal human testes and liver libraries. Truncation of hrgr confers transforming ability to its cDNA. Using a RT-PCR assay we have been able to detect the expression of an abnormally truncated transcript in several human T-cell lymphoma lines, and in fresh tissue samples of patients with T-cell malignancies...

Lymphoma is a very common lymphoid neoplasm in domestic animals, but few naturally occurring cases have been reported in rabbits. It presents at different sites within rabbits and, although the macroscopic pattern tends to be similar, different cell populations may be involved. This report describes a case of spontaneous lymphoma ocurring in a two-and-a-half-year-old pet Dutch dwarf rabbit. T and B lymphocyte infiltrates were observed in skin, lung, kidney, liver, intestine and lymph nodes, in each case affecting one or more tissue structures...
