Apelin, an endogenous ligand for apelin receptor (APJ), is reported to be involved in cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. In this study, we explored the mechanism of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy induced by apelin-13/APJ system. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) rat model was established by constricting the abdominal aorta. Western blots were used for protein expression in LVH rats and cultured H9c2 cardiomyocytes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to monitor morphological features of cells. In addition, the diameter and volume of H9c2 cells were detected by Scepter™ Handheld Automated Cell Counter...

The topological materials have attracted much attention for their unique electronic structure and peculiar physical properties. ZrTe5 has host a long-standing puzzle on its anomalous transport properties manifested by its unusual resistivity peak and the reversal of the charge carrier type. It is also predicted that single-layer ZrTe5 is a two-dimensional topological insulator and there is possibly a topological phase transition in bulk ZrTe5. Here we report high-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the electronic structure and its detailed temperature evolution of ZrTe5...

When hydrophobically modified chitosan (HM-CHI) comes into contact with red blood cells (RBCs), it can cause agglomeration. This property leads HM-CHI to be a potential agent to form a rapid haemostatic plug to stop bleeding at wound sites. In this study, we investigated the properties of the HM-CHI biopolymer to act as an agent that rapidly clots blood. We have examined the synthesis and structural characteristics of HM-CHI - blood substances using X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis...

Efficient and biodegradable hemostatic materials become increasingly important in civilian and military clinical. However, traditional hemostatic materials are difficult to achieve expected effects especially in parenchymal organs with rich vascularity. In facing these challenges, we designed a biodegradable collagen sponge reinforced with chitosan/calcium pyrophosphate nanoflowers (CPNFs-Col sponge) for rapid hemostasis. With specific performances, such as rapid water absorption ability, the positive surface rich in amino groups and high specific surface area (952...

Renal fibrosis is the most common outcome of chronic kidney disease (CKD), while the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis is not fully understood. In this study, we first showed that the progress of renal fibrosis was positively related to serum levels of indoxyl sulfate, a typical protein-bound toxin, and that there was a close correlation between serum indoxyl sulfate levels and β-catenin expression in the kidneys (r = 0.908, p < 0.001) of CKD patients. We then demonstrated that intraperitoneal injections of indoxyl sulfate (100 mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks in uninephrectomized mice explicitly induced renal fibrosis, which was accompanied by a significant activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling...

The human genome contains thousands of long intergenic noncoding RNAs (lincRNAs). However, the functional roles of these transcripts and the mechanisms responsible for their deregulation in colorectal cancer (CRC) remain elusive. A novel lincRNA termed upregulated in CRC (UCC) was found to be highly expressed in human CRC tissues and cell lines. UCC levels correlated with lymph node metastasis, Dukes' stage, and patient outcomes. In SW480 and SW620 cells, knockdown of UCC inhibited proliferation, invasion, and cell cycle progression and induced apoptosis in vitro...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder that affects ~2% of the human population aged >65. α‑synuclein serves a role in the pathogenesis of PD as it is a primary component of Lewy bodies, a pathological feature of PD. Endosomal‑lysosomal dysfunction may be a key factor involved in the pathophysiology of PD, and may cause PD‑associated neurodegeneration via α‑synuclein‑dependent and ‑independent mechanisms. The D620N mutation in the endosomal‑lysosomal gene, vacuolar protein sorting‑associated protein 35 (VPS35), has been linked to PD...
