PURPOSE: To describe the prevalence of choroidal nevus in the US population and identify possible associated factors. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 5575 participants aged ≥40 years from the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) who underwent retinal imaging examination. INTRODUCTION: Continued smoking after a cancer diagnosis is a critical problem. This study examined smoking prevalence among all and specific cancer survivors, and compared demographic profiles of the current smokers between cancer and non-cancer individuals. METHODS: We used data from 2,188 cancer survivors and 22,441 non-cancer individuals who participated in the 10-year National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999-2008). All analyses were weighted to represent the United States population...

Adjusted attributable risk (AR) is the proportion of diseased individuals in a population that is due to an exposure. We consider estimates of adjusted AR based on odds ratios from logistic regression to adjust for confounding. Influence function methods used in survey sampling are applied to obtain simple and easily programmable expressions for estimating the variance of AR. These variance estimators can be applied to data from case-control, cross-sectional, and cohort studies with or without frequency or individual matching and for sample designs with subject samples that range from simple random samples to (sample) weighted multistage stratified cluster samples like those used in national household surveys...

Our specific aim in a 10-year prospective study of 772 Cincinnati firemen (predominantly aged 26 to 46 years) was to determine the prevalence, attributes, and etiology of persistent hypobetalipoproteinemia, defined by entry low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) less than 75 mg/dL. A second specific aim was to cross-sectionally assess hypocholesterolemia (defined by total serum cholesterol [TC] < 130 mg/dL) in 1,314 white and 165 black men aged 26 to 46 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I)...
