The relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma has been established. However, data from Ecuador is limited. The objective of this study was to characterize HPV infection in Ecuadorian patients with tongue cancer. Fifty-three patients with tongue cancer treated at the tertiary referral center Sociedad de Lucha Contra el Cancer (SOLCA), Guayaquil, between 2006 and 2011 were identified. Linear Array® HPV genotyping was used to identify the presence and types of HPV on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded biopsy samples from these patients with tongue cancer...

BACKGROUND:  In 1964, faced with the challenge of traumatic amputation, a team of surgeons at Clinica Guayaquil was convinced that the transplantation of a hand could significantly improve function and quality of life for the recipient. With a current but basic understanding of immunosuppression, the surgeons identified a recipient and waited for the correct donor. A human hand transplant had never been performed to date. METHODS:  The surgeons' criteria for the recipient included a young healthy individual who had sustained a traumatic amputation at the distal forearm level with full motion of the proximal joints...

The common bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus , is widely distributed along the western coast of South America. In Ecuador, a resident population of bottlenose dolphins inhabits the inner estuarine area of the Gulf of Guayaquil located in the southwestern part of the country and is under threat from different human activities in the area. Only one genetic study on South American common bottlenose dolphins has been carried out to date, and understanding genetic variation of wildlife populations, especially species that are identified as threatened, is crucial for defining conservation units and developing appropriate conservation strategies...

Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne arbovirus, is a major public health concern in Ecuador. In this study, we aimed to describe the spatial distribution of dengue risk and identify local social-ecological factors associated with an outbreak of dengue fever in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. We examined georeferenced dengue cases ( n = 4248) and block-level census data variables to identify social-ecological risk factors associated with the presence/absence and burden of dengue in Guayaquil in 2012. Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA), specifically Anselin’s Local Moran’s I, and Moran’s I tests were used to locate hotspots of dengue transmission, and multimodel selection was used to identify covariates associated with dengue presence and burden at the census block level...

Escherichia coli is one of the major causes of urinary tract infections in primary healthcare, and treatment is more complicated due to the increase in antibiotic resistance. Extended-spectrum β-lactamases are the most common mechanism of resistance against third-generation cephalosporin, and CTX-M-like are among the most prevalent. The aim of our work is to investigate the prevalence of blaCTX-M in isolates of E. coli obtained from samples of patients without previous known contact with the hospital. Ninety-four E...
