Isolated myocysticercosis is a neglected tropical disease and a rare diagnosis, with only a handful of cases being reported in the literature. It is highlighted that recently, it has not only been limited to endemic regions but also persists globally due to widespread migration from endemic regions. We present a case of isolated myocysticercosis of the right pectoralis major without neurological involvement in a non-pork-eater. High-resolution ultrasonography is an effective method of diagnosis. Anti-helmintic drugs are effective treatment options; if not responding, surgical excision is the management of choice...

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of intestinal parasites is known to be high among Amerindian populations; further, there are serious problems in the healthcare of these populations in Brazil. The Maxakali, located in the northeastern region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is an indigenous group that still preserves many of its cultural aspects. This study aimed to compare the positivity rate of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths in this ethnic group in epidemiological surveys conducted in 1972 and 2014...

Moringa oleifera L., commonly known as Kelor in Indonesia and miracle tree in English, has a rich history of utilization for medicinal, nutritional, and water treatment purposes dating back to ancient times. The plant is renowned for its abundance of vitamins, minerals, and various chemical constituents, making it a valuable resource. Among its notable pharmacological properties are its effectiveness as an anti-diabetic, anti-diarrheal, anti-helmintic, anti-leishmanial, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-allergic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant agent...

Wild boars ( Sus scrofa ) are a significant invasive species in Brazil. We evaluated the helminth diversity of 96 wild boars in São Paulo state. Helminth infection descriptors were calculated, the species were identified and their 18S, 28S rDNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions were amplified for phylogenetic analyses. Ascarops strongylina , Strongyloides ransomi , Globocephalus urosubulatus , Oesophagostomum dentatum , Trichuris suis , Metastrongylus salmi , Metastrongylus pudendotecus , Ascaris suum and Stephanurus dentatus and Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus were identified...

Gamma crystallins play a major role in age-related lens transparency. Their destabilization by mutations and physical chemical insults is strongly associated with cataract formation. Therefore, drugs that increase their stability should have anti-cataract properties. To this end, here we screened 2,560 FDA-approved drugs and natural compounds for their ability to suppress or worsen H2 O2 and/or heat-mediated aggregation of bovine γ-crystallins. The top two drugs, Closantel (C), an anti-helmintic drug, and Gambogic Acid (G), a xanthonoid, attenuated thermal-induced protein unfolding as determined by fluorescence spectroscopy, aggregation as shown by turbidimetry, dynamic light scattering, and electron microscopy of human or mouse recombinant crystallins...

Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by trematode parasites of the genus Schistosoma that affects approximately 200 million people worldwide. Schistosomiasis has been a persistent problem in endemic areas as there is no vaccine available, currently used anti-helmintic medications do not prevent reinfection, and most concerning, drug resistance has been documented in laboratory and field isolates. Thus, alternative approaches to curtail this human disease are warranted. Understanding the immunobiology of the obligate intermediate host of these parasites, which include the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata , may facilitate the development of novel methods to stop or reduce transmission to humans...

The prevalence of anemia ranges from 44 to 56% in Ethiopia. Although its magnitude has shown decreases across regions; it continues to be a significant public health problem, particularly in developing countries including Ethiopia. Despite this evidence, the magnitude and associated factors of anemia was not systematically explored and there is a limited information or limited evidences in the study area...

PURPOSE: Anti-helmintic drugs mebendazole and albendazole are commonly used to treat a variety of parasitic infections. They have recently shown some promising results in pre-clinical in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer studies. METHODS: We compare their efficacy in breast and colon cancer cell lines as well as in non-cancerous cells and elucidate their mechanism of action. The drugs were screened for cytotoxicity in MDA-MB-231, MCF-7 (breast cancer), HT-29 (colorectal cancer), and mesenchymal stromal cells, using the MTT assay...

Emamectin, a neurotoxic agent, is a semi-synthetic insecticide that belongs to the Avermectin family and is used against helmintic infections in the Salmonidae family. Its secondary effects are not clear; thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the only effects of emamectin benzoate on various biochemical parameters (AST, ALT, GGT, total protein, albumin and glucose) in serum and expressional changes of IL-1β, TNF-α, HSP70 and IL-8 in liver and spleen. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cause of cancer-related death in the world. Emerging evidence suggests that the clinical success of conventional chemotherapy does not merely rely on cell toxicity, but also results from the restoration of tumor immune surveillance. Anti-tumor immune response can be primed by immunogenic cell death (ICD), a form of apoptosis associated with endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) induction and the expression/release of specific damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Unfortunately, a limited number of ICD inducers have been identified so far...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Drug repositioning is a promising approach for new cancer therapies, as it provides the opportunity to rapidly advance potentially promising agents into clinical trials. The FDA-approved anti-helminthic drug rafoxanide was recently reported to antagonize the oncogenic function of the BRAF V600E mutant protein, commonly found in CRCs, as well as to inhibit the proliferation of skin cancer cells. These observations prompted us to investigate the potential anti-cancer effects of rafoxanide in CRC models...

This study investigated, for the first time, the distribution and fate of 28 multiple-class veterinary pharmaceuticals and antibiotics (PhACs), and their corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), in a full-scale on-farm livestock waste treatment plant. The plant relies on several technologies, including: anaerobic digestion (AD), solid-liquid separation, and two stages reverse osmosis (RO) of the liquid digestate. Tetracycline, fluoroquinolone, lincosamide and pleuromutilin antibiotics, together with anti-helmintic (flubendazole) and anti-inflammatory (flunixin) drugs were the most frequently detected compounds in livestock waste and in slaughterhouse sludge...
