The present study aims to review all the major articles on respiratory sleep disorders, mechanical ventilation, and respiratory critical care published in the last year in Archivos de bronconeumología. Between December 2009 and November 2010, 15 studies on these topics were published in Archivos de bronconeumología. Ten of these studies dealt with respiratory sleep disorders, consisting of six original articles, one special article, one review article, one letter to the editor and one supplement on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and its association with sleep apneas...

Five articles and an editorial on interventional pneumology were published in Archivos de Bronconeumología. Two of these articles deal with bronchoscopy, one with lung biopsy with cryoprobes, one with thermoplasty in asthma and the last with tracheobronchomalacia. We also review several publications in international journals, with special emphasis on endobronchial ultrasound. Four original articles on idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis were published in Archivos de Bronconeumología: one special article comparing two treatments and a Cochrane systematic review on the efficacy of non-steroidal drugs in this disease...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) continues to cause concern among health professionals treating respiratory diseases worldwide. The reasons for the increasing tendency in prevalence, morbidity and mortality rates are under constant investigation. Areas of research include identification of new phenotypes, predisposing factors, and physiopathological and epidemiological features that are still not completely known, as well as the systemic behavior of this disease and its relationship with other, associated pathological states...

We reviewed the major issues in thoracic surgery relating to the advances made in our specialty in 2010. To do this, the 43(rd) Congress of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery held in La Coruña and the articles published in the Society's journal, Archivos de Bronconeumología, were reviewed. The main areas of interest were related to the development of video-assisted thoracic surgery, lung transplantation and descending mediastinitis. The new tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) classification (7(th) edition), presented last year, was still a topical issue this year...

Interest in asthma research among Spanish pneumologists is increasing. In the last year, 22 articles on asthma have been published in Archivos de Bronconeumología, six more than in the previous year. Furthermore, 56 communications were presented at the National Congress of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery and were published in a supplement of the journal, representing 60% more than in the previous year's congress. A critical review of all these articles is provided. The original articles contribute further knowledge on epidemiological and clinical aspects of the disease and basic research...

Endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscopy has been one of the most important contributions to the minimally invasive diagnosis and staging of mediastinal disease in the last few years. Two original works with linear and radial endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscopy published in the Archivos de Bronconeumología are analysed. In pleural pathology, we have selected a multicentre study one the usefulness of an outpatient tunnelised pleural drainage in 63 patients with malignant neoplastic effusions. This technique was indicated in 20% when pleurodesis failed or was not indicated, and an overall symptomatic improvement was achieved in 95% of cases...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) continues to be a disease of special importance due to its great social impact arising from its high prevalence, its high morbidity and mortality and the high health costs it incurs. This has led to a great number of articles on different aspects associated with COPD each year. There is increasingly greater emphasis made of the systemic repercussions of the diseases and its comorbidity. In that same sense, tools are being sought to be able to make a more accurate prognosis of the diseases and assess other different aspects of lung function...

A total of 16 articles (Table 1), were published in the Archivos de Bronconeumología in the past year (December 2008 to November 2009), 9 of which were Originals, which was 17.6% of the originals published in that period. Fortunately, the tendency of a decreasing interest in asthma by pneumologists does not seem to have materialised as was feared a few years ago, on the contrary it seems that research is increasing. All articles that appeared in the journal during the period mentioned are reviewed.

The present study analyses the works published in Archivos de Bronconeumología from June 2008 to November 2009 that mention sleep disorders, non-invasive ventilation and critical care. The methodology used was to analyse the objectives of the works submitted, with their main results and the conclusions suggested by the authors, often putting forward the possibility of conducting new research studies. The review no only includes original articles but is also a reflection on the editorials, special articles and review works...

INTRODUCTION: Scientific cooperation is essential for the advance of biomedical research. Scientists set up informal groups to work together on common issues, who are the main units in the research funding system. Bibliometric and Social Network Analysis methods allow informal groups in scientific papers to be identified and characterised. The objective of the study is to identify research groups in Archivos de Bronconeumología between 2003 and 2007 period with the aim of characterizing their scientific collaboration patterns and research areas...

This article discusses the current main clinical problems of thoracic surgery and pneumology by means of the articles published in 2008 in the "clinical notes" section of the journal Archivos de Bronconeumología. The 18 cases published -which deal with topics ranging from pharmacologic toxicity to lung function- will enable us to discuss the main novelties in each one of the various fields and highlight future areas for research.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze Spanish scientific research output related to tuberculosis during the 10-year period from 1997 through 2006 and to consider it within the context of European Union (EU) productivity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The bibliometric study was based on a search of the MEDLINE database, using the PubMed search interface. Search terms were tuberculosis or tuberculous appearing in any database field. RESULTS: Of 35 735 titles retrieved, 1191 were by Spanish authors...

A review has been made of original articles on invasive pneumology techniques, interstitial diseases and lung transplantation, published in the Archivos de Bronconeumología during the year 2008. We have selected the publication by Martínez-Olondrins et al on the mediastinal staging of bronchogenic carcinoma by <blind> transbronchial needle aspiration to highlight the role of this simple, safe and cost-effective technique at a time when aspiration by ultrasound-guided bronchoscopy is profiled as an alternative to staging by mediastinoscopy...

The articles on thoracic oncology published in this journal during the year 2008 are briefly commented on. As regards the epidemiology, it is noted that the standardised incidence rate of lung cancer in males is starting to decline, and there is another study that analysed links between two common diseases, COPD and lung cancer. Other works have focused on aspects such as diagnosis, staging or prognosis, and analysing the value of positron emission tomography in the assessment of a solitary pulmonary nodule, the effectiveness of aspiration transbronchial needle aspiration in mediastinal staging, the prognostic significance of the over-expression and amplification of c-erbB-2 in patients with small cell carcinoma...

This is a review of the articles dealing with basic science published in recent issues of Archivos de Bronconeumología. Of particular interest with regard to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were an article on extrapulmonary inflammation and oxidative stress and another on bronchial remodeling. The articles relating to asthma included a review on the use of drugs that block free immunoglobulin-E and an article about the contribution of experimental models to our knowledge of this disease. Two of the most interesting articles on the topic of lung cancer dealt with gene therapy and resistance to chemotherapy...

The aim of the case reports section of Archivos de Bronconeumología is to bring together unusual cases representing a substantial contribution to our understanding of the pathophysiology or other clinical and biological features of a disease. During 2007, 17 case descriptions were published in this section. They dealt with such diverse topics as lung cancer surgery, interventional radiology, and idiopathic interstitial diseases. The objective of this review is to call attention to the contributions of these cases by summarizing their main observations...
