Exercise capacity, an objective measure of exercise intolerance, is known to predict quality of life and mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF). The mechanisms for exercise intolerance in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), however, have yet to be fully elucidated. Accordingly, this study sought to investigate oxygen uptake kinetics and the impact of fat-free mass (FFM) on exercise capacity in young patients with CF. 16 young patients with CF (age 13 ± 4 years; 10 female) and 15 matched controls (age 14 ± 3 years; nine female) participated...

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Gas exchange and heart rate (HR) kinetics were investigated in 20 patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) by using a pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS)-technique. Electrocardiogram was continuously recorded, and VO2, VCO2 and ventilation/min (VE) responses to a multifrequent input signal were measured by means of breath-by-breath analysis. Lag time and peak value in the time-domain, and amplitude ratios in the frequency-domain were calculated to characterize the crosscorrelation functions between input and responses, and compared to normal ranges...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) have been shown to exhibit impaired oxygen uptake (VO2) kinetics independent of their physical fitness. This study investigated whether oxygen supplementation improves VO2 kinetics in CF as determined by cycle ergometry at submaximal exercise intensities using a pseudo-random binary sequence exercise test i.e. a simultaneous application of different frequencies of sinusoidal work. The subjects were 9 CF patients and 13 healthy controls (HC) and they exercised while breathing humidified and heated air with a fractional concentration of oxygen in inspired air (F(I)O2) of either 0...

Search Tips

Use Boolean operators: AND/OR

diabetic AND foot
diabetes OR diabetic

Exclude a word using the 'minus' sign

Virchow -triad

Use Parentheses

water AND (cup OR glass)

Add an asterisk (*) at end of a word to include word stems

Neuro* will search for Neurology, Neuroscientist, Neurological, and so on

Use quotes to search for an exact phrase

"primary prevention of cancer"
(heart or cardiac or cardio*) AND arrest -"American Heart Association"
