Mastodynon(R) for Female Infertility. Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Clinical Double-Blind Study OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: The effects of Mastodynon(R), an Agnus castus-containing preparation, were investigated in 96 women with fertility disorders in a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study. 52 patients with mastopathia were treated with Mastodynon. The drug was given twice daily in a dose of 30 drops over a period of at least three cycles. 24 out of 52 patients had no more pain at all; in 15 patients pain was decreased to a minimum. Mastodynon showed side effects in only four cases where gastric incompatibility was found. Therapy with Mastodynon is an effective alternative to surgical or hormone treatment.

The therapeutic effect of a long-term Gestagen therapy (lynestrenol) and a phytotherapy (Mastodynon) in comparison to a placebo group is reported in 160 cases of severe mastopathy with cyclic mastalgia. In 82.1 percent of the patients in the gestagen-group and in 74.5 percent of the patients in the Mastodynon-group a good relief of the premenstrual symptoms was achieved. In the placebo group only 36.8 percent of the patients reported a relief of symptoms. The difference is significant. In this paper results in diagnostics and therapy are presented of 185 patients with breast diseases obtained during special consultation hours. The greatest part of the breast diseases are fibrocystic mastopathies. Very good therapeutic results have been achieved using the phytotherapeutic agent Mastodynon. Emphasis is laid on the increasing importance of the histological findings and hormon receptor determination.

The aetiology of mastopathy and mastodynia has not yet been fully explained. Hormonal dysregulation with relative or complete hyperoestrogenism, or a deficiency of androgens or progesterones has led to treatment with gestagens or gestagen-active preparations. The treatment of 112 patients with Mastodynon has shown a good result in 78% of cases, the risks and side effects of the treatment being small. Careful diagnosis with all of the possibilities available to us today and clinical supervision during the treatment are necessary in order not to overlook malignant processes...
