INTRODUCTION: Cardiac myxomas account for 50% of all benign cardiac tumors. Their clinical presentation varies from embolisms to fever. Our objective was to describe the surgical experience in the resection of cardiac myxomas during an 8-year period. METHODS: This is a retrospective, descriptive study of a series of cases with cardiac myxomas diagnosed from 2014 to 2022 at a tertiary care center. Descriptive statistics were used to define the populational and surgical characteristics...

A 33-year-old woman with a history of high blood pressure since she was 8 years old, hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic syndrome, multiple nevi, and a maternal family history of death at age 50 due to malignant high blood pressure and heart failure. Cushing's syndrome secondary to a secretory pituitary microadenoma was diagnosed, being the cause of secondary arterial hypertension, and ruling out other causes such as renal stenosis and coarctation of the aorta. A transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiogram was performed, which detected a left atrial myxoma...

Perioperative stroke is one of the complications that can occur during the surgical procedure and up to 30 days after it. A 52-year-old woman with no neurological symptoms and a diagnosis of intracardiac mass. She underwent cardiac surgery with resection of the tumor that was compatible with atrial myxoma. In the immediate postoperative, she presented neurological symptoms and was diagnosed with basal ganglia infarction of embolic etiology. Perioperative stroke appears most frequently in cardiovascular surgery but is rarely reported in heart tumor resection surgery...

This article analyzes the singularity of historical, scientific, and political processes from the discovery of the disease caused by the myxoma virus (MYXV) that came to be known as infectious myxomatosis to the application of this virus against a plague of rabbits in Australia. This narrative focuses on research by Henrique de Beaurepaire Aragão, a researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, and later efforts by the scientist Jean Macnamara to promote studies and implement MYXV in Australia. The scientists' research notes were consulted, along with official documents recording the experiments and periodicals...

INTRODUCTION: Lymphomas arising from cardiac myxomas represent a particularly rare pathology, with only few cases reported in the literature.Case presentation: We report a complete excision of a malignant lymphoma arising from a cardiac myxoma in a 44-year-old female patient. The myxoma presented like a floating mass within the left atrium with a maximum diameter of 3.5 cm. The clinical post-operative period was uneventful and the patient was dismissed on the 6th post-operative day. CONCLUSION: This case reinforces the concept of radical excision of cardiac neoplasms...

Occasionally is not possible to find clinical or radiological distinctive findings so is usefull to perform additional exams, think about rare disease and perform an explorative surgical treatment which can be adapted to the intraoperatory findings...

Los mixomas auriculares izquierdos son más frecuentes que los derechos (5:1). El 85% se localizan en el tabique interauricular izquierdo, el 11% en el tabique auricular derecho y el 1% son múltiples2,3 .

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Primary cardiac tumors are a rare disease, which may have severe clinical consequences. Malignant tumors may be misdiagnosed as mixomas, with improper treatment. The aim of this review is to report how to make a differential diagnosis using old and modern tools, the latest trends in tumor classification and treatment, and their possible impact on prognosis. RECENT FINDINGS: Papillary fibroelastomas seem to be more frequent than previously reported, and surgery is also suggested in asymptomatic patients...

Cardiac tumors, are a rare pathology (0.002-0.3%) in all age groups, however, they have a clinic importance, due the affected organ. They are classified in primary (benign or malignant) and secondary (metastasis) types. Among primary type, mixoma, is the most common benign tumor, and sarcoma represents most of the malignant injuries. Cardiac metastasis are more frequent than primary tumors. Clinic effects of cardiac tumors are unspecific and vary according their location, size and agresivity. The use of Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) assist on the location, sizing, anatomical relationships and the compromise of adyacents structures, besides, MRI is useful for tissue characterization of the tumor...

REVIEW

Mixomas are the most common primary cardiac tumors with an estimate incidence of 0,5-1 per 10(6) individuals per year. These tumors have generated interest due to their unique location (left side of the atrial septum near the fossa ovalis), variable clinical presentation and undefined histogenesis. Most cardiac myxomas occur sporadically while approximately 10% of diagnosed cases develop as part of Carney complex. This neoplasm is of uncertain histogenesis, however, endothelial, neurogenic, fibroblastic, and cardiac and smooth muscle cells differentiation has been proposed, and rarely glandular differentiation has been observed...

Morphological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural but also clinical and prognostic differences between multiple types of mesenchimal (stromal, nonepithelial) tumors of the gastrointestinal tract prompted us the remembrance of an anecdotic series of sixteen observations of mesenchymal "nonstromal" gastrointestinal tumors (MNSGIT) encountered in four decades of surgical practice. The diagnosis was mainly established on clinical grounds (dyspepsia, pains, digestive hemorrhage or obstruction, palpable tumor) - some lesions being incidentally discovered - and confirmed by radiology, endoscopy, intraoperative exploration and microscopic pathology examination which revealed 9 schwannomas, three leiomyomas, two lipomas, fibroma and "mixoma" one case each...
