Monolithic zirconia restoration is an acceptable treatment option in restorative dentistry and a developing trend in esthetic dentistry. Digital dentistry has simplified fabrication of monolithic zirconia restorations. Zirconia ceramic has introduced an opportunity to achieve both esthetic and mechanical requirements for restorations. This is rarely found for a ceramic in dentistry. Monolithic zirconia restorations represent an acceptable durability, comparable to metal-ceramic restorations, while they are superior to metal-ceramic restorations esthetically; however, difficulties to gain an optimal shade reproduction and a color match with monolithic zirconia restorations still remain...

This study evaluated the color variability of hues B, C, and D between the VITA Classical shade guide (Vita Zahnfabrik) and four other VITA-coded ceramic shade guides using a digital camera (Canon EOS 60D) and computer software (Adobe Photoshop CC). A cross-polarizing filter was used to standardize external light sources influencing color match. A total of 275 pictures were taken, 5 per shade tab, for 11 shades (B1, B2, B3, B4, C1, C2, C3, C4, D2, D3, and D4), from the following shade guides: VITA Classical (control); IPS e...

Fabricating a ceramic restoration for a discolored anterior tooth presents a clinical challenge. The dental technician is often hampered by being unaware of the shade of the discolored tooth preparation, which influences the color of the overlying ceramic restoration. A definitive cast that replicates the shade of the prepared tooth helps the ceramist to fabricate a restoration that masks the discoloration appropriately and still achieves the desired optical properties. This report demonstrates the use of a technique of recording and communicating the shade of a prepared tooth to the dental laboratory technician...

The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of the types and thicknesses of glass ceramic plates on light transmittance and compare the degrees of conversion (DC) of resin cement under the ceramic materials. Three ceramic plates with thicknesses of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 mm were fabricated from each of five commercial ceramic blocks in shade A2: high-translucency and low-translucency IPS Empress CAD (Emp_HT and Emp_LT); high-translucency and low-translucency IPS e.max CAD (Emx_HT and Emx_LT); and Vita Mark II (Vita)...

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although several monolithic zirconia ceramics have recently been introduced, the need for improved optical properties remains. The newest cubic-zirconia has been claimed to have optimal translucency characteristics for esthetic restorations. PURPOSE: This in vitro study evaluated the optical properties of novel cubic ultratranslucent (UT) and supertranslucent (ST) zirconia by comparing them with lithium disilicate (L-DIS) glass-ceramic for the manufacture of monolithic computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) molar crowns...

OBJECTIVES: To assess the translucency of two pressable ceramics and to analyze their masking property when placed on different tooth-shaded backgrounds. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty discs (1-mm thickness) were fabricated using two pressable ceramics (shade/translucency): 1M1T/HT, 1M2T/HT, 2M2T (VITA PM9), and A1LT/HT, B1LT/HT, A2LT (e.max Press). Color measurements of discs were performed with a dental spectrophotometer on tooth-colored backgrounds (A1/A2/A3/A3...

REVIEW
Farhad Tabatabaian
Zirconia ceramic is a popular trend in esthetic and restorative dentistry. Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems have been well developed to fabricate zirconia frameworks and restorations with acceptable mechanical properties. Zirconia ceramics have excellent optical characteristics; however, achieving optimal esthetic outcomes with zirconia-based restorations is still challenging due to multiple effective factors on the final color. These factors are different layers of a zirconia-based restoration and its underlying structures including: dental substrate, cement, zirconia coping, veneering ceramic, and glaze...

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Poor implant placement or thin gingival tissue and progressive bone resorption may lead to the dark metal color showing through the peri-implant soft tissue. Whether the dark color can be adequately masked is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to test the color masking effect of porcelain applied on titanium used in fabricating the polished collar of tissue level implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Type 4 commercially pure titanium disks and 5 porcelain dentin shades (A2, A3, B2, C2, and D3) were used...

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The cementation of ceramic veneers using light-polymerized resin cement is largely dependent on the proper light activation of the cement. This study evaluated the impact of tooth shade on differences in color (∆E), lightness (∆L), chromaticity coordinates a*/b* (∆a and ∆b), transmittance and the degree of fluorescence of CAD/CAM leucite based ceramic (LBC). Ten disks were fabricated of LBC; Empress CAD, A2, thickness of 1.5 mm and eight disks of resin-nano-ceramic (RNC; Lava Ultimate) in different colors to simulate variations in substrate shade. The associations of LBC disks with different color substrates were analyzed with a spectrophotometer; ∆E, ∆L*, ∆a*, ∆b*, and transmittance were measured and calculated...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the translucency and strength of highly translucent monolithic zirconia ceramic materials recently introduced to the market. Four monolithic zirconium oxide materials promoted as having high translucency (BruxZir Shaded 16, BruxZir HT, Lava Plus, and inCoris TZI C) were compared to a high-translucency, lithium disilicate monolithic glass-ceramic material (IPS e.max CAD HT). To evaluate translucency, the materials were sectioned into 0.5-, 1.0-, 1.5-, and 2.0-mm-thick specimens; all were sintered and polished...

Ectodermal Dysplasia Syndrome (EDS) is mainly X-linked inherited disorder with male predominance. According to Lyon hypothesis, female patients may show partial expression of EDS. Oral findings include hypodontia, rarely anodontia, protuberant lips, hyposalivation, conical teeth and loss of vertical dimension. The alveolar process fails to develop in the three dimensions. Such patients present a challenge to dental treatment due to an irregular residual ridge. This case report presents oral, functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of a 21-year-old female diagnosed with EDS using implants in the anterior maxilla at the sites of the canines bilaterally...
