BACKGROUND: Obstetrical infection is one of the causes of maternal death and a difficult problem for many clinicians. Changes in the demographic and obstetric background of pregnant women following the Universal Two-Child Policy may have an impact on some fertility phenomena. And with the increase in the number of deliveries, the limited medical resources become more scarce. How will China's health system quickly adapt to the growing needs and expectations for maternal health and ensure the provision of qualified and accessible medical services? In addition, what social support measures should be provided to reduce preventable obstetric complications? Given the relatively low per capita share of medical resources in China, how should China deal with the impact of the Universal Two-Child Policy? Therefore, more studies based on the change of fertility policy are needed...

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) refers to abnormal glucose tolerance during pregnancy, and it is often accompanied by obvious changes in glucose and lipid metabolism, and associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. The incidence of fetal distress, polyhydramnios, puerperal infection, premature delivery, and macrosomia in pregnant women with GDM are higher than in those without GDM. AIM: To analyze the relationship between age of pregnant women with GDM and mode of delivery and neonatal Apgar score...

Any bacterial infection of the genital tract after childbirth is called maternal puerperal infection. This infection accounts for 13% of pregnancy-related deaths and is the fifth leading cause of maternal mortality. Endometritis (postpartum uterine infection) has been associated with preeclampsia and maternal lethal bleeding in recent decades. In some studies, the presence of meconium in the amniotic fluid has been implicated in the development of endometritis. The study aimed to evaluate the association between interleukin-19 gene polymorphisms and maternal puerperal infection...

INTRODUCTION: Rates of delivery by cesarean section have gradually risen in many parts of the world, and it is regarded as a safe surgical procedure with expanded indications. We assessed maternal complications within 6 weeks postpartum after planned cesarean section and after planned vaginal delivery among patients without medical indication for cesarean section. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study based on Swedish national registers and included 714 326 deliveries from 2008 to 2017...

BACKGROUND: Women with obesity are at increased risk of complications during and after labor and delivery, including puerperal infection and cesarean delivery. As labor induction has become increasingly common, it is crucial to find ways to decrease complication rates in this high-risk population. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effect of prophylactic antibiotics during labor induction of nulliparous women with obesity on the rates of cesarean delivery and puerperal infection and to estimate the parameters needed to calculate the sample size for a larger, multicenter trial...

BACKGROUND: Caesarean section, a common obstetric surgical procedure, is a major predisposing factor for puerperal infections, requiring the need for antibiotic prophylaxis. Evidence suggests that single-dose antibiotic prophylaxis has comparable efficacy to multiple-dose antibiotic prophylaxis, but with a lower cost and risk of antibiotic resistance. However, single-dose antibiotic prophylaxis after caesarean section is not generally used in many centres in sub-Saharan Africa. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of single- versus multiple-dose antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent post-caesarean section infections...

BACKGROUND: Globally, peripartum or puerperal infections account for about one tenth of maternal mortality, most of which occur in low income countries. Therefore, vaginal preparation with an antiseptic prior to a caesarean delivery could be considered an additional measure to prevent subsequent infectious morbidities. We aimed to review Semmelweis's complete work on puerperal sepsis mortality in maternity wards in relation to exposure to cadavers and chlorine handwashing and other factors from the perspective of modern epidemiological methods. We reviewed Semmelweis' complete work and data as published by von Györy 1905 according to current standards. We paid particular attention to Semmelweis's definition of mortality in and of itself, to concepts of modern epidemiology that were already recognizable in Semmelweis's work, and to bias sources...

BACKGROUND: There is lack of knowledge concerning postpartum infections in women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our aim is to determine the 30-day postpartum infectious complications in women with and without IBD who have a caesarian section, normal vaginal delivery, or assisted vaginal delivery. METHODS: We used Danish national registries to establish a study population of liveborn, singleton births from January 1, 1997, through December 31, 2015. We examined 30-day postpartum maternal infectious complications in women with and without IBD, according to the mode of delivery...

METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted. The clinical data of critically ill pregnant women admitted to ICU of Peking University Third Hospital from January 2006 to July 2019 were analyzed. According to the admission mode to ICU, the pregnant women were divided into emergency admission group (transferred to ICU on the same day or the next day due to critical illness) and planned admission group (transferred to ICU 2 days after admitting in obstetric ward)...

We report a case of Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome (FHCS) 1 week after an urgent cesarean section. Although its onset in the postpartum period is poorly reported in the literature, we suggest that FHCS can complicate puerperal endometritis; therefore, it should be consider in differential diagnosis in puerpera with right upper quadrant pain. Again, it can be useful to perform a contrast computed tomography that allows early diagnosis and conservative treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a kind of spherical DNA virus, which is related to many factors such as immune status and pregnancy. Due to the decrease of immunity, pregnant women are more likely to have HPV infection, which causes serious imbalance of vaginal microecology and is not beneficial to pregnancy outcome. Therefore, this study focuses on the impact of HPV infection on vaginal microecology and maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: A total of 140 pregnant women with HPV infection during pregnancy, who received obstetric examination in the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical College from November 2017 to July 2019, were selected as a HPV infection group, and 150 normal pregnant women with HPV negative in the same period were selected as a control group...
