Oxytetracycline (OTC) is a tetracycline antibiotic, widely used in human and veterinary medicines, including in aquaculture. Given this use, OTC has been detected in different aquatic environments. Some recent works have demonstrated unintentional biological activity of OTC in non-target aquatic organisms. This study investigated the acute and chronic effects of OTC on the physiology of the fish species Oncorhynchus mykiss (rainbow trout), namely through the quantification of the activity of enzymes involved in different biochemical pathways, such as detoxification (phase II - glutathione S-transferases - GSTs, uridine-diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferases - UGTs), neurotransmission (acetylcholinesterase - AChE) and energy production (lactate dehydrogenase - LDH)...

The role of antibiotics commonly used in fish culture activities in methylmercury (MeHg) formation in mariculture sediments (MS) and in reference sediments (RS) was studied using simulation microcosms. MS and RS were split into three equal batches. Two batches were spiked with Hg(NO3 )2 aqueous solution at levels of 2 and 8 mg kg-1 (dry weight basis) and the remainder served as a control batch. Tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) (2.5 g and 10 g of each) were added to each treatment. Sediment THg concentration decreased during the culture period possibly due to complexation of Hg with the antibiotics resulting in the dissolution of Hg compounds from the sediment...

The fate and transport of antibiotics in the aquatic environment are usually influenced by the combined effects of environmental factors. In this study, batch-type experiments were conducted to investigate the combined effects of phosphate and salinity on oxytetracycline (OTC) adsorption on, and desorption from, two marine sediments. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted the kinetic data better than pseudo-first-order model. The pseudo-second-order kinetic rate (k2 ) of OTC increased significantly with increasing phosphate concentrations...

The method of Three-Dimensional Excitation Emission Matrix Fluorescence Spectrophotometer was used to identify the interaction mechanism between humic acid (HA) and antibiotics. The effects of antibiotic concentration, temperature, and pH on the bonding strength between HA and antibiotics were investigated. The results showed that with the increase of antibiotics concentration, the quenching effect on HA was enhanced. The quenching of HA by both oxytetracycline (OTC) and sulfadiazine (SD) is a single static quenching of the complexes, and the interaction forces are mainly a hydrogen bond and the van der Waals force...

Oxytetracycline (OTC) as an important broad spectrum antibiotic has been widely used in animal husbandry. However, the abuse of OTC not only has a direct adverse impact on ecosystems, but also exacerbates the appearance of antibiotic resistance bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes. OTC-containing wastewater was treated using microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and the removal efficiency of OTC in MFCs in different operation periods was investigated. Result showed that the removal efficiency of 10 mg·L-1 OTC by MFCs within 132 h was up to 99...

Driven by economic interests, the abuse of antibiotics has become a significant concern for humans worldwide. As one of the most commonly used antibiotics, oxytetracycline (OTC) residue in animal-derived foods occurs occasionally, which has caused danger to humanity. However, there is still no simple and efficient solution to detect OTC residue. Here, an easily-operated colorimetric strategy for OTC detection was developed based on nickel ions (Ni2+ ) immobilized carboxymethylcellulose/polyacrylonitrile nanofibrous membranes (Ni@CMC/PAN NFMs)...

Pollution of water by single antibiotics has been investigated in depth. However, in reality, a wide range of different contaminants is often mixed in the aquatic environment (contaminant cocktail). Here, single and competitive sorption dynamics of ionizable norfloxacin (NOR), sulfamerazine (SMR) and oxytetracycline (OTC) by both pristine and modified biochars were investigated. Sorption kinetics of the three antibiotics was faster in ternary-solute than single-solute system. Sorption efficiency was enhanced in the competitive system for NOR by the pristine biochar, and for OTC by both the pristine biochar and the modified biochar, while SMR sorption by the pristine biochar and the KOH-modified biochar was inhibited...

Veterinary antibiotics reaching soils and water bodies are considered emerging pollutants deserving special attention. In this work, dissipation of tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) is investigated. Dissipation experiments in filtered water, using simulated sunlight, resulted in the following degradation sequence: TC < OTC ≈ CTC, with half-life values of 229, 101 and 104 min, respectively; however, no dissipation took place in the dark. Dissipation of the three tetracyclines in culture medium and with simulated sunlight was much higher, giving the sequence TC ≈ OTC < CTC, with half-lives of 9, 10 and 7 min, respectively; in the dark, TC and OTC did not suffer dissipation, but it was around 28% for CTC at the end of the experiment (480 min)...

Biochars and hyperaccumulators have been widely used for the remediation of trace metal contaminated soils through immobilization and phytoextraction. These two options have rarely been used simultaneously despite their potential to achieve a greater decline in trace metal availability and higher removal efficiency in polluted soils. This study investigated the combined effects of biochar and the cadmium/zinc (Cd/Zn) hyperaccumulator Sedum plumbizincicola in a pot experiment and examined the effect of an antibiotic (oxytetracycline, OTC) in an acid soil spiked with Cd/Zn alone and with OTC...
