Basal-cell carcinoma with matrical differentiation (BCC-MD) is one of the rarest pathologic variants of basal-cell carcinoma, of which 41 cases have been so far reported in detail. One of them developed in a heart-transplant recipient. We report a new case of BCC-MD occurring in a renal-transplant recipient and review the relevant literature. A 75-year-old white man who had received a renal allograft 7 years ago developed a tumor on the left temple clinically suggestive of basal-cell carcinoma. Microscopically, the tumor associated features typical of basal-cell carcinoma (basaloid lobules with peripheral palisading and clefting) and pilomatricoma (presence of shadow/ghost cells)...

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (PanNET) is a neoplastic entity in which few prognostic factors are well-known. Here, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of N-myc downstream-regulated gen-1 (NDRG-1), O6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) and Pleckstrin homology-like domain family A member 3 (PHLDA-3) by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and methylation analysis in 92 patients with resected PanNET and follow-up longer than 24 months. In multivariate analyses, ki-67 and our immunohistochemistry prognostic score (IPS-based on MGMT, NDRG-1 and PHLDA-3 IHC expression) were independent prognostic factors for disease-free-survival (DFS), while age and IPS were independent prognostic factors for overall survival (OS)...

Herein, we report two cases of a follicular neoplasm with panfollicular differentiation showing architectural and cytologic findings suggestive of a malignancy. Immunohistochemical analysis of β-catenin expression in the neoplasm showed nuclear and cytoplasmic immunoreactivity, with no reactivity in the transitional and shadow cells, consistent with β-catenin expression of pilomatrical tumors. Staining for BerEp4 was positive at the periphery of both neoplasms, suggesting germinative differentiation of the neoplastic cells, whereas staining for the follicular stem-cell marker PHLDA-1 (TDAG51) showed strong focal expression in the tumor cells of both cases...
