BACKGROUND: There is little knowledge regarding the prevalence and nature of renal impairment in African populations initiating antiretroviral treatment, nor evidence to inform the most cost effective methods of screening for renal impairment. With the increasing availability of the potentially nephrotixic drug, tenofovir, such information is important for the planning of antiretroviral programmes METHODS: (i) Retrospective review of the prevalence and risk factors for impaired renal function in 2189 individuals initiating antiretroviral treatment in a rural African setting between 2004 and 2007 (ii) A prospective study of 149 consecutive patients initiating antiretrovirals to assess the utility of urine analysis for the detection of impaired renal function...

The study aimed at evaluating proximal renal tubule function in patients with nephrolithiasis and chronic pyelonephritis, and in patients with infectious diseases treated with gentamicin. The study involved 2 groups of patients: group A--17 patients with nephrolithiasis and chronic pyelonephritis and group B--30 patients with other infectious diseases (pneumonia, biliary tract infections) but with normal glomerular filtration rate. Patients from both groups were treated with gentamicin in a daily dose of 2-3 mg/kg for 7-10 days...

A principle of studying the nephrotoxic properties of drugs under conditions of maintaining their constant levels in the blood and dynamic registration of the nitrogen levels in the urea followed by histological examination of the kidney is proposed. Correlation between the levels of gentamicin and streptomycin in the cat blood during 4-hour infusion and the level of the nephrotoxic effect was found, gentamicin being much more toxic than streptomycin.
