Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and the fourth cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. In an attempt to raise awareness on this situation, and to implement preventive measures, March 31st has been established as international colorectal cancer awareness day. Our country, with the Spanish "Alianza para la Prevención del Cáncer de Colon", pioneered in 2008 an institution that brought together scientific and civil societies to pursue this goal. A stabilization, even a decrease in the incidence and mortality of this condition has been reported in western countries for the last few years, which may be attributed to a number of highly relevant factors...

Recently, new conservative and non-resective surgical techniques, including palatopharyngeal surgical lifting and suspension (the 'Roman blinds technique') and modular barbed snore surgery (MBSS), have been successfully introduced for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). This pilot longitudinal study describes our preliminary experience with the 'Alianza technique' (the simultaneous use of Roman blinds and MBSS) in mild to moderate OSAS patients with concentric pharyngeal collapse at the velum, previously documented by means of drug-induced sleep endoscopy...

This Symposium highlights the recognition that this year reaches half a century of the Medical Movement (1964-1965), and 27 years of publishing the book titled, "Documental Memories and Reflections" ("Crónica Documental y Reflexiones") edited by the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM, at that time directed by the prestigious Dr. Fernando Cano Valle. Our President Dr. Graue indicated that Dr. Alejandro Treviño-Becerra assumed the coordination of this session with the commitment to be published in the Medical Gazette of Mexico for current and future generations...

We reviewed the literature covering the medical movement in 1964-1965, which began on November 26, 1964 with the ISSSTE November 20 Hospital scholarship protest and the emergence of the Mexican Resident Interns Physicians Association (Asociación Mexicana de Médicos Residentes e Internos, AMMRI) and the Mexican Medical Alliance (Alianza de Médicos Mexicanos, AMM). We describe four work stoppages, two protest marches, the takeover of hospitals by the police, four interviews with Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz and his first presidential report...

Movement disorders (bemichorea-hemiballismus, hemidystonia and isolated tremor) are an uncommon clinical manifestation in ischemic stroke (IS), and their anatomical basis is poorly understood. We analyzed the clinical and neuroimaging characteristics of 22 consecutive patients who bad movement disorders associated with cerebral infarction (MDCI), studied at four institutions over 8 years. In one institution (from the La Alianza-Central Hospital of Barcelona Stroke Registry) nine patients with MDCI were identified among 1099 consecutive first ever stroke patients (0...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common malignant tumor in Spain, when men and women are considered together, and the second leading cause of cancer death. Every week in Spain over 500 cases of CRC are diagnosed, and nearly 260 people die from the disease. Epidemiologic estimations for the coming years show a significant increase in the number of annual cases. CRC is a perfectly preventable tumor and can be cured in 90% of cases if detected in the early stages. Population-based screening programs have been shown to reduce the incidence of CRC and mortality from the disease...

High levels of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to both chloroquine (CQ) and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) have been documented throughout the Amazon Basin of South America. Because of reports about the persistent efficacy of both of these drugs in the northwestern Peruvian Amazon region, we carried out an evaluation of the therapeutic efficacy of chloroquine (25 mg/kg) and SP (25 mg/kg of the sulfadoxine component) for the treatment of uncomplicated P. falciparum infections at two sites: Ullpayacu and Pampa Hermoza/Alianza...

Field surveys were carried out in coffee plantations in Chiapas, Mexico, to collect and identify fungi associated with the cuticle, gut, faeces and galleries of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei. Insects and coffee berries containing galleries were collected in three coffee farms at different altitudes: Rosario Izapa (425 m), La Alianza (700 m) and Monteperla (950 m). An additional sample consisting of coffee berry borers reared in the laboratory on meridic diets was also included. Results show that there is a great diversity of fungi associated with this insect...

The aim of the study was to compare demographic characteristics, anamnestic findings, cerebrovascular risk factors, and clinical and neuroimaging data of cardioembolic stroke patients with and without atrial fibrillation and of atherothrombotic stroke patients with and without atrial fibrillation. Predictors of early diagnosis of cardioembolic vs. atherothrombotic stroke infarction in atrial fibrillation patients were also determined. Data of cardioembolic stroke patients with (n=266) and without (n=81) atrial fibrillation and of atherothrombotic stroke patients with (n=75) and without (n=377) were obtained from 2000 consecutive patients included in the prospective Sagrat Cor-Alianza Hospital of Barcelona Stroke Registry...

The aim of this study was to determine factors predictive of cerebral infarction subtype from clinical data collected within 48 h of neurologic deficit. All cardioembolic (n = 231) and atherothrombotic infarctions (n = 369) included in prospective stroke registry of the Sagrat Cor-Alianza Hospital of Barcelona were analysed. Demographic characteristics, anamnestic findings, cerebrovascular risk factors and clinical data of patients with embolic stroke and patients with thrombotic infarction were compared. Predictors of stroke subtype were assessed by means of a logistic regression model based on 16 clinical variables...

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical features of cardioembolic infarcts. MATERIAL & METHODS: Cardioembolic infarct was diagnosed in 231 (15.4%) of 1500 consecutive stroke patients included in a prospective stroke registry over an 8-year period. RESULTS: Cardiac sources of emboli included isolated atrial dysrhythmia (57.1%), valvular heart disease (20.3%), and coronary artery disease (18.2%). Patients with cardioembolic stroke showed a significantly higher (P < 0...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
A Arboix, J Massons, M Oliveres, L García, F Titus
BACKGROUND: Registries of cerebral vascular disease (CVD) are useful in the study of the natural history of acute cerebrovascular disease (ACBD). Nonetheless there are few series which analyze the different stroke subtypes (SS) of CVD. METHODS: A descriptive and comparative clinical analysis was performed of the different SS of CVD from the registry of CVD of the La Alianza-Central Hospital of Barcelona (Spain). A prospective study of 1,000 consecutive patients with ACVD admitted in the Neurology Department from 1986-1991 was carried out...

BACKGROUND: Few studies have been performed on mortality from acute cerebrovascular disease (ACVD) during hospital admission, particularly in Spain. METHODS: A prospective clinical analysis was performed in 1,356 consecutive patients with ACVD included in the Registry of Cerebrovascular Disease of the Central La Alianza-Hospital in Barcelona (1986-1992) with the aim of analyzing the causes of mortality during the acute phase of the disease and the time of hospital survival...
