The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of vitamin C on growth and quality of semen from Oreochromis niloticus breeders. One hundred and sixty males were fed with different levels of vitamin C (0, 261, 599 and 942 mg/kg diet). The higher weight values were recorded for 599 (166 g) and 942 (175 g) mg of vitamin C/kg diet. Sperm motility, vigour and concentration were higher with 599 and 942 mg of vitamin C/kg diet. The semen volume, gonadosomatic index and plasma protein data from the last week showed a direct relationship with increasing levels of vitamin C...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

Sixteen fertile rams were randomly allotted to four groups and fed either of the four diets for 14 weeks: (1) control diet (COD) without fish oil (FO) and vitamin C (VC), (2) diet containing 2.5% FO (FOD), (3) diet containing 300 mg/kg DM VC (VCD), and (4) diet containing 2.5% FO and 300 mg/kg DM VC (FCD). Semen was collected at 14-d intervals from 1 April to 10 July (out of the physiologic breeding season in Iran). Semen volume and percentages of motile and progressively motile sperm were increased by FO and VC feeding...

Elocalcitol, which had been under development by BioXell SpA, is a synthetic derivative of vitamin D3 that regulates cell proliferation and apoptosis via its binding to the vitamin D receptor. In preclinical studies, elocalcitol inhibited the androgen-dependent and androgen-independent proliferation of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) cells more potently than finasteride, a 5alpha-reductase inhibitor. In a phase IIb trial in patients with BPH, treatment with elocalcitol resulted in a significantly reduced prostate volume compared with placebo; irritative urinary symptoms (frequency, urgency and nocturia) and urodynamic parameters were comparable to the alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonist tamsulosin...

Three experiments involving 192 crossbred boars evaluated the effects of dietary Se (0 or .5 ppm) and vitamin E (0 or 220 IU/kg) on growth, tissue Se, and alpha-tocopherol concentrations, and on semen quality and its subsequent effect on fertilization rate in mature gilts. Diets formulated used torula yeast and dextrose or cornstarch as the basal feedstuffs and were provided from weaning through sexual maturity. The basal diets averaged .063 ppm Se and 3.46 mg alpha-tocopherol/kg diet. Experiment 1 was a 2 x 2 factorial and conducted as a randomized complete block design in six replicates...

An understanding of the natural history of changes in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) may be valuable as a surrogate view of prostate dynamics, as a method to differentiate between benign and malignant growth, and as a means to assess the use of PSA as a tool for monitoring activity of chemoprevention agents. Although PSA appears to be useful as a noninvasive marker of prostatic growth, PSA changes should not be confused with a direct measure of tumor growth. Serum PSA levels are a function of tumor volume but are also influenced by the volume of benign epithelium, grade of carcinoma (if any), inflammation, androgen levels, growth factors, and the extracellular matrix...
