The hydrophilic extracts of mulberry (HEM) and blueberry (HEB) and lipophilic extracts of mango (LEM) and watermelon (LEW) were mixed in different ratios to assess the antioxidant interactions by chemical-based (DPPH and ABTS assays) and H9c2 cell-based models. There were both synergistic and antagonistic antioxidant interactions among these fruits. Some groups with combinational extracts showed stronger synergistic antioxidant effects than the individual groups, and others (HEM-LEW F1/10, LEW-LEM F5/10, and HEB-LEM F3/10) showed stronger antagonistic effects than the individual groups based on the indicators [the values of DPPH, ABTS, and MTT; the expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA); the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH); and the quantification of cellular antioxidant activity]...

Protection of the cardiac cell against hypoxia-induced cell damage is one of the main approaches to preventing cardiovascular disease. Earlier studies have shown the cardioprotective effect of the human Amniotic Membrane (hAM) in animal model of cardiac injury. However, the effect of Amniotic Membrane Proteins (AMPs), extracted from hAM, on myocardial hypoxia injury remains unclear. So, our study aimed to investigate the protective effect of AMPs against hypoxia-induced cardiomyocytes apoptosis. H9c2 cardiomyocytes were pre-treated with AMPs followed by 24 h in hypoxia condition...

An extract of Dendropanax morbifera branch exerts antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, and anticancer activities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the extract in isoproterenol-induced cardiac hypertrophy. Phalloidin staining showed that treatment with the extract dramatically prevents isoproterenol-induced H9c2 cell enlargement and the expression of cardiac hypertrophic marker genes, including atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and B-type brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). Further, pretreatment with the extract decreased isoproterenol-induced GATA4 and Sp1 expression in H9c2 cells...

Swainsonine is an Astragalus membranaceus extract. It is indole, alkaloid, and soluble in water. Its effect on rat cardiomyocytes apoptosis, and the mechanisms underlying that effect, were investigated by inducing apoptosis in H9c2 cells. This was detected by MTT assay, Annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide double staining and western blotting. Flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy were used to confirm swainsonine's effect on mitochondrial membrane potential and levels of reactive oxygen species, while an ATP-dependent bioluminescence assay kit served to find the ATP contents...

Cardiovascular diseases are one of the major global health issues leading to morbidity and mortality across the world. In the present study Bacopa monniera and its major bioactive component, Bacoside A (Bac-A) was used to evaluate its cytoprotective property in H9C2 cardiomyocytes against tBHP (150 μM) induced ROS-mediated oxidative stress and apoptosis. Our results implicate that pre-treatment with hydroalcoholic extract of Bacopa monniera (BME) and Bac-A (125 μg/ml and 6 μg/ml respectively) significantly restored oxidative stress by scavenging the free radicals and also elevated phase II antioxidant defensive enzymes such as (SOD, CAT, GR, GPx and GSH)...
