Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) are easily accessible and are attractive mesenchymal stem cells for use in regenerative medicine; however their application is frequently restricted due to various challenges present in the environment they are administered. Therefore ADMSCs are preferably preconditioned with various stimulating factors to overcome the barriers developed in any pathological conditions. Here we used ADMSCs from rat adipose based on the abundance of positive markers and preconditioned the cells with extracts from Alpinate Oxyphyllae Fructus (AOF), a traditional Chinese herb used for antiaging, associated various health benefits...

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is defined as a cardiac dysfunction leading to low cardiac output and inadequate tissue perfusion. Intravenous positive inotropes are used to increase myocardial contractility in hospitalized patients with advanced heart failure. Milrinone is a phosphodiesterase Ⅲ inhibitor and used most commonly for inotropic effect. The well-known PROMISE study investigated the effects of milrinone on mortality in patients with severe CHF, and concluded that long-term therapy with milrinone increased morbidity and mortality among patients with advanced CHF...

BACKGROUND: human Amniotic Membrane (hAM) extracts contain bioactive molecules such as growth factors and cytokines. Studies have confirmed the ability of hAM in reduction of post-operative dysfunction in patients with cardiac surgery. However, the function of Amniotic Membrane Proteins (AMPs), extracted from hAM, against hypoxia-induced H9c2 cells injury have never been investigated. In this study, we aimed to appraise the protective impact of AMPs on H9c2 cells under hypoxia condition...

Herein, we investigated the effects of B. diffusa (BDE), a well-known cardiotonic edible medicinal plant against apoptosis in Angiotensin II (Ang II)-stimulated hypertrophic cardiac cells (H9c2). The cells were analyzed for viability, markers of hypertrophy, apoptosis, and the expression of various proteins related to apoptosis. Ang II (100 nM for 48 h)-exposed H9c2 cells treated with BDE (75 μg/ml) showed a significant reduction in apoptosis (58.60%↓) compared to Ang II-alone treated cells. BDE treatment significantly reduced the up-regulation of Bax and cytosolic cytochrome-C caused by Ang II as well as reduced the degree of Ang II- induced down-regulation of Bcl-2...

With the chronic ischemia persisting after acute myocardial infarction, the accompanying low-degree inflammation and subsequent fibrosis result in progression of cardiac remodeling and heart failure. Recently, Sodium Houttuyfonate (SH), a pure compound extracted from Houttuynia cordata , has been confirmed exerting anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects under diseased situations. Here, we aimed to investigate whether SH could reverse the cardiac remodeling post-myocardial infarction by alleviating cardiac inflammation and fibrosis...

Although herb medicines have become the major source for new drug discovery, many of them are largely under-explored due to the purity-activity relationship. Efficient identification of bioactive compounds in conventional stepwise separation and isolation has not yet been elucidated. Therefore, we proposed a new separation strategy for holism understanding of herb pharmacology using molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). Astragali Radix (AR), important in traditional Chinese medicine, was chosen in this study for multicomponent knockout followed by bioactivity evaluation...

Doxorubicin is a highly active antineoplastic agent, but its clinical use is limited because of its cardiotoxicity. Although nutraceuticals endowed with anti-inflammatory properties exert cardioprotective activity, their bioavailability and stability are inconsistent. In an attempt to address this issue, we evaluated whether bioavailable nanoemulsions loaded with nutraceuticals (curcumin and fresh and dry tomato extracts rich in lycopene) protect cardiomyoblasts (H9C2 cells) from doxorubicin-induced toxicity...

Oxidative stress plays an important role in the progression of cardiac diseases, including ischemia/reperfusion injury, myocardial infarction, and heart failure. Growing evidence indicates that cabbage has various pharmacological properties against a wide range of diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, hepatic diseases, and cancer. However, little is known about its effects on oxidative stress in cardiomyocytes or the underlying mechanisms. Therefore, the present study examined the effects of cabbage extract on oxidative stress in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts...

The hydrophilic extracts of mulberry (HEM) and blueberry (HEB) and lipophilic extracts of mango (LEM) and watermelon (LEW) were mixed in different ratios to assess the antioxidant interactions by chemical-based (DPPH and ABTS assays) and H9c2 cell-based models. There were both synergistic and antagonistic antioxidant interactions among these fruits. Some groups with combinational extracts showed stronger synergistic antioxidant effects than the individual groups, and others (HEM-LEW F1/10, LEW-LEM F5/10, and HEB-LEM F3/10) showed stronger antagonistic effects than the individual groups based on the indicators [the values of DPPH, ABTS, and MTT; the expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA); the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH); and the quantification of cellular antioxidant activity]...

Protection of the cardiac cell against hypoxia-induced cell damage is one of the main approaches to preventing cardiovascular disease. Earlier studies have shown the cardioprotective effect of the human Amniotic Membrane (hAM) in animal model of cardiac injury. However, the effect of Amniotic Membrane Proteins (AMPs), extracted from hAM, on myocardial hypoxia injury remains unclear. So, our study aimed to investigate the protective effect of AMPs against hypoxia-induced cardiomyocytes apoptosis. H9c2 cardiomyocytes were pre-treated with AMPs followed by 24 h in hypoxia condition...

An extract of Dendropanax morbifera branch exerts antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, and anticancer activities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the extract in isoproterenol-induced cardiac hypertrophy. Phalloidin staining showed that treatment with the extract dramatically prevents isoproterenol-induced H9c2 cell enlargement and the expression of cardiac hypertrophic marker genes, including atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and B-type brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). Further, pretreatment with the extract decreased isoproterenol-induced GATA4 and Sp1 expression in H9c2 cells...
