The aim of this work is to develop and adapt a formalism to determine absorbed dose to water from graphite calorimetry measurements in carbon-ion beams. Fluence correction factors, <i>k</i>fl, needed when using a graphite calorimeter to derive dose to water, were determined in a clinical high-energy carbon-ion beam. Measurements were performed in a 290 MeV/n carbon-ion beam with a field size of 11 x 11 cm2, without modulation. In order to sample the beam, a plane-parallel Roos ionization chamber was chosen for its small collecting volume in comparison with the field size...

Relapsed indolent lymphoma often becomes refractory to standard chemoimmunotherapy and requires new therapeutic strategies. Targeting the PI3K/mTOR pathway in several types of lymphoma has shown preclinical and clinical efficacy providing the rationale to test this strategy in the treatment of relapsed/refractory indolent lymphomas. We investigated in a phase II open label clinical trial the efficacy and safety of single agent everolimus, an inhibitor of mTORC1, in patients with relapsed/refractory indolent lymphomas...

BACKGROUND/AIM: It is not known why cerebrovascular and cardiovascular ischaemic events are less frequently observed in heterozygous beta thalassaemia (HBT) patients than in the general population. However, we previously reported that serum levels of some platelet function markers, i.e. soluble CD40 ligand and soluble P-selectin, are lower in patients with HBT than in controls. A high mean platelet volume (MPV) is an indicator of in vivo platelet activation and may indicate a tendency to thrombosis...

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), also known as brittle bone disease, displays a spectrum of clinical severity from mild (OI type I) to severe early lethality (OI type II), with clinical features including low bone mass, fractures and deformities. Mutations in the FK506 Binding Protein 10 (FKBP10), gene encoding the 65KDa protein FKBP65, cause a recessive form of OI and Bruck syndrome, the latter being characterized by joint contractures in addition to low bone mass. We previously showed that Fkbp10 expression is limited to bone, tendon and ligaments in postnatal tissues...

Rituximab (R), a chimeric monoclonal antibody targeting CD20 antigen on B-cells, has become a standard of care in the treatment of B-cell malignancies, most often in conjunction with cytotoxic chemotherapy. Activity has been demonstrated in many subtypes of B-cell lymphoma, including diffuse large cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma (FL), mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma, and Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM). Additionally, dose escalation of R as a single agent has demonstrated improved activity in previously treated/poor prognosis CLL...

Sweet's syndrome (SS) is a rare condition characterized by the abrupt appearance of painful skin lesions due to neutrophilic dermal infiltration. Hematologic neoplasms, particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs), have been commonly reported in association with SS. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) is an emerging entity that is a precursor state to myeloid neoplasms. CHIP has not been previously associated with SS. We report the case of a 71-year-old man who presented with recurrent, painful edematous and erythematous papules and nodules for 18 months despite treatment with corticosteroids...

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the most frequent indolent lymphoma and is characterized by the accumulation of germinal center-derived malignant B cells engaged in a bidirectional crosstalk with their supportive microenvironment in invaded lymph nodes (LN) and bone marrow (BM). T follicular helper cells (TFH) and infiltrating stromal cells have been shown to favor FL B-cell growth but the mechanisms of their protumoral effect and how LN/BM microenvironment is converted into a lymphoma-permissive cell niche remain poorly understood...

BACKGROUND: Racial-ethnic disparities in acute stroke care can contribute to inequality in stroke outcomes. We examined race-ethnic disparities in acute stroke performance metrics in a voluntary stroke registry among Florida and Puerto Rico Get With the Guidelines-Stroke hospitals. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seventy-five sites in the Florida Puerto Rico Stroke Registry (66 Florida and 9 Puerto Rico) recorded 58 864 ischemic stroke cases (2010-2014). Logistic regression models examined racial-ethnic differences in acute stroke performance measures and defect-free care (intravenous tissue plasminogen activator treatment, in-hospital antithrombotic therapy, deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis, discharge antithrombotic therapy, appropriate anticoagulation therapy, statin use, smoking cessation counseling) and temporal trends...

p57(Kip2) (p57) is a maternally expressed imprinted gene regulating growth arrest which belongs to the CIP/KIP family of Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitors. While initially identified as a cell cycle arrest protein through inhibition of cyclin and cyclin-dependent kinase complexes, p57 activity has also been linked to differentiation, apoptosis, and senescence. In addition, p57 has recently been shown to be involved in tumorigenesis and cell fate decisions in stem cells. Yet, p57 function in adult tissues remains poorly characterized due to the perinatal lethality of p57 knock-out mice...

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL) have not been assessed among Palestinian Arabs (PA) and Israeli Jews (IJ). METHODS: In a case-control study we investigated self-reported medical and lifestyle exposures, reporting odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals [CIs], by ethnicity, for overall B-NHL and subtypes. RESULTS: We recruited 823 cases and 808 healthy controls. Among 307 PA/516 IJ B-NHL cases (mean age at diagnosis = 51 [±17] versus 60 [±15] years, respectively) subtype distributions differed, with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) being prominent among PA (71%) compared to IJ (41%); follicular lymphoma (FL), was observed in 14% versus 28%, and marginal zone lymphoma, in 2% versus 14%, respectively...

An extraction method for mixed-linkage β-glucan from oat and barley was developed in order to minimize the effect of extraction on the β-glucan structure. β-Glucan were characterized in terms of molecular size and molar mass distributions using asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) coupled to multiangle light scattering (MALS), differential refractive index (dRI) and fluorescence (FL) detection. The carbohydrate composition of the extracts was analysed using polysaccharide analysis by carbohydrate gel electrophoresis (PACE) and high-performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC)...

A novel series of monodisperse star-shaped ladder-type oligo(p-phenylene)s, named as TrL-n (n = 1-3), have been explored. Their thermal and electrochemical properties, fluorescence transients, photoluminescence quantum yields, density functional theory calculations, electroluminescence (EL) and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties have been systematically investigated to unravel the molecular design on optoelectronic properties. The resulting materials showed excellent structural perfection free of chemical defects, exhibiting great thermal stability (Td: 404-418°C and Tg:147-184°C) and amorphous glassy morphologies...
