Time delay estimation (TDE) between two radio-frequency (RF) frames is one of the major steps of quasi-static ultrasound elastography, which detects tissue pathology by estimating its mechanical properties. Regularized optimization-based techniques, a prominent class of TDE algorithms, optimize a nonlinear energy functional consisting of data constancy and spatial continuity constraints to obtain the displacement and strain maps between the time-series frames under consideration. The existing optimization-based TDE methods often consider the L2 -norm of displacement derivatives to construct the regularizer...

In radiology practices, the ultrasound-guided breast biopsy is among the most commonly performed minimally invasive procedures. However, many radiology residents in their graduate residencies are found with little or no hands-on experience with ultrasound-guided breast procedures. To enhance safety, the problem can be solved by the use of anthropomorphic training phantoms which can provide the resident with realistic ultrasound imaging and needle insertion haptic feedback. Stiffness and acoustic properties of breast tissues vary between different people...

There are many different approaches to ultrasound-guided supraclavicular brachial plexus block (US-SCBPB), and each has a different success rate and complications. The most commonly performed US-SCBPB is the corner pocket approach in which the needle is advanced very close to the subclavian artery and pleura. Therefore, it may be associated with a risk of subclavian artery puncture or pneumothorax. We advanced the needle into the central part of the neural cluster after penetrating the sheath of the brachial plexus in US-SCBPB...

Arteriovenous malformations are uncommonly occurring congenital conditions and great vein of Galen malformations are rare form of arteriovenous malformations. Aneurysmal dilatation of the median prosencephalic vein of Markowski is responsible for the clinical presentation of patients and most children manifest the disease during infancy. We present three cases of great vein of Galen malformations, presenting to Tikur Anbessa hospital, one with thrombosis and communicating hydrocephalus; the other two with obstructive hydrocephalus and no thrombosis...

BACKGROUND: Imaging plays the key role in diagnosing and staging of CE. The description of CE-specific imaging features and the WHO CE cyst classification is based on ultrasound. The reproducibility of the ultrasound-defined features of CE cysts is variable in MR- and CT-imaging. This is of particular importance for cysts that are not accessible by US and because of the increasing availability and overuse of CT and MR imaging. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Retrospective analysis of patients with abdominal CE cysts of an interdisciplinary CE clinic who had CT and/or MRI scans performed additionally to US imaging...

The most common problems related to cerebrospinal fluid shunt are obstruction, infection and overdrainage. The incidence of shunt complications is higher when less time has elapsed since the previous shunt surgery. Nearly all shunt patients end up with one or multiple reoperations. Thorough history, head scan (ultrasound, CT or MRI) and plain x-ray (shunt series) are the corner stones when reviewing shunt problems. Patients with obstructed shunt and increased intracranial pressure need urgent shunt revision...

PURPOSE: The aim of this report is to present IBIS (Interactive Brain Imaging System) NeuroNav, a new prototype neuronavigation system that has been developed in our research laboratory over the past decade that uses tracked intraoperative ultrasound to address surgical navigation issues related to brain shift. The unique feature of the system is its ability, when needed, to improve the initial patient-to-preoperative image alignment based on the intraoperative ultrasound data. Parts of IBIS Neuronav source code are now publicly available on-line...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether dynamic ultrasound (US) would be able to differentiate posterolateral corner knee injuries that would require surgical intervention. METHODS: This is a single-group cohort study. A knee sonogram was obtained in patients referred to us with suspected posterolateral knee injury. In addition to static US imaging, a dynamic US stress test was performed by placement of maximum varus stress on the knee at 30 degrees of flexion...

We present a series of four patients with what we have termed the snapping pes syndrome. This is a painful clicking and catching experienced at the posteromedial corner of the knee when moving from flexion to extension. Clinical examination and real time ultrasound are the most useful diagnostic tools. If medical treatment is unsuccessful surgical excision of both the semitendinous and gracilis tendons is indicated for relief of persistent symptoms.
