Millions of physically active individuals worldwide use heart rate monitors (HRMs) to control their exercise intensity. In many cases, the HRM indicates an unusually high heart rate (HR) or even arrhythmias during training. This study examined the reproducibility of performance across 3 non-motorized treadmill (NMT) 5-km time trials (TT) and physiological, gait, and perceptual differences of running at 5-km pace for both NMT and motorized treadmills (MT). Ten male runners experienced in road racing that had never run on a NMT completed 3 TT to establish personal best 5-km pace. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart arrhythmia, the risk of which typically increases with age. This condition is commonly associated with major cardiovascular diseases and structural heart damage, while it is rarely observed in healthy young people. However, increasing evidence indicates that paroxysmal AF can also onset in young or middle-aged and otherwise healthy endurance athletes (e.g., cyclists, runners and cross-country skiers).
