Candidates for abdominoplasty often request multiple procedures at the time of consultation. Some of these patients have the potential opportunity to have ancillary procedures performed through the abdominoplasty incision, such as breast augmentation or suction-assisted lipectomy. Access via the abdominoplasty incision can also limit the need for distant donor sites, for instance, when autologous fillers or rib graft are necessary. The techniques described are straightforward and are based on standard principles that should be considered when ancillary procedures are performed in conjunction with abdominal contouring procedures...

A questionnaire was addressed to 600 members of the French Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. Out of 19,000 interventions, thanks to the analysis of 112 answers, we were able to get a good picture of the activity in aesthetic surgery, showing the number and type of complications experienced during each intervention. Cosmetic surgical procedure represents 35% of global surgical activity of the French plastic surgeon. The most frequent interventions are liposuction (19%), breast augmentation (16%), eye-lid surgery (14%), abdominoplasty (12%), mammaplasty (10%), facelift (10%) and rhinoplasty (8%)...

Aesthetic surgery has its origin in plastic surgery. It has considerably developed to such a point that the number of procedures performed at the present time is well over the reconstructive procedures. After having emphasized the importance of patient's motivation and the high level of specific technical training of the plastic surgeon, the most common procedures are illustrated. Their major advantages and pitfalls are outlined.

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rapidly developing disease, which may be lethal if not recognized and treated early. TSS unrelated to menstruation comprises an increasing proportion of the cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control during recent years, and a review of the literature reveals that TSS has is reported with increasing frequency in plastic surgical patients as well. The majority of reports relates to aesthetic plastic surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty, augmentation mammaplasty liposuction, and chemical peeling, but cases of TSS following reconstructive breast surgery with musculocutaneous flaps have also been reported...

An 8-year survey of patient satisfaction in an academic aesthetic surgery clinic at the University of Toronto was carried out by means of a mailed questionnaire. A total of 265 questionnaires were mailed; 131 completed questionnaires (49.4 percent) were returned. Of these, 93.1 percent would recommend this clinic (88.1 percent in the first year of operation and 95.4 percent in the subsequent 7 years), and 92.9 percent would undergo the same procedure again, if required (88.3 percent in the first year and 95...

A review was done of the records of 50 patients who had osseous genioplasty performed at the same sitting as face lifting and, in many cases, submental lipectomy over a 20-year period by the senior author. The types of genioplasties were sliding advancement (40), lengthening with interpositional bone graft (7), and reduction (3). In 9 patients, chin implants were removed, generally because of inadequate chin projection or implant erosion. Three patients were operated on under local anesthesia, the remainder under general anesthesia...

OBJECTIVES: To assess the health related quality of life of patients before and after aesthetic surgery. DESIGN: A survey by questionnaire of patients before receiving surgery and 6 months after surgery. SAMPLE: 656 patients anticipating surgery were sent a preoperative questionnaire, to which 443 replied. Subsequently 259 of these received a postoperative questionnaire, of which 198 were returned. OUTCOME MEASURES: Health status was assessed using three standardised health status instruments (The Short Form 36 Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) and the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale...

Now that endoscopic techniques have been established in visceral and trauma surgery under the concept of minimal invasive surgery, plastic surgery has also begun to accept these techniques since minimal invasive surgery is very important in this field. In contrast to abdominal and thoracic surgery, plastic surgery cannot be done in preformed cavities. Therefore, it was necessary to develop new techniques and instruments. We present the most important operations in the field of plastic surgery that can so far be carried out endoscopically...

292 patients with a variety of "low-priority" conditions completed the Health Measurement Questionnaire self-report instrument (HMQ) on admission for surgery, and again 6 months post-operation. Comparison of the two questionnaires permitted the change in Quality of Life (QoL) to be measured. Overall, of the respondents, 73% gained benefit from surgery in terms of improvement in QoL. The largest gains were in the breast surgery group, but there were individual patients in all groups who gained substantial improvement in QoL...

A retrospective study was performed to determine the frequency of new symptoms and diseases after silicone breast implantation. Questionnaires were mailed to 826 women who made up a breast implant group (n = 516) and a control group who had undergone blepharoplasty (n = 124), liposuction (n = 111), or rhinoplasty (n = 75). Responses were obtained from 370 women (45 percent); however, 68 of these patients (18 percent) were considered ineligible. The overall response rate was 59 percent for the breast implant group and 46 percent for controls...

Pneumothorax may be a medical emergency. Iatrogenic pneumothorax is more common than all other forms of spontaneous pneumothorax, and surgical procedures involving the breast are a frequent setting for this. A 32-year-old, 60 kg, woman without any significant medical history underwent a bilateral breast augmentation and rhinoplasty. She underwent a routine general endotracheal anesthetic. Prior to surgical incision, the surgeon infiltrated the breast with lidocaine with epinephrine. Six hours into the surgical procedure, the patient developed hemodynamic compromise and was diagnosed with tension pneumothorax, which was treated emergently with a 14-gauge angiocatheter placed intrapleurally...

Postoperative complications from 7,552 cosmetic surgical procedures were studied retrospectively. 22 general and 60 local complications occurred. Five of the most serious were three complications from anaesthesia, one peripheral nerve damage and one prolonged psychiatric situation. Two patients required hospitalization. Correction of protruding ears gave the relatively largest incidence of local complications, and Suction lipectomy the largest incidence of general complications. The most common complications were hematoma, skin slough and problems related to anaesthesia...

Four pairs of identical female twins have undergone a variety of plastic surgery procedures, including rhinoplasties, rhytidectomies, augmentation mammaplasties, and trochanteric liposuction. Performing plastic surgery on identical twins implies special considerations: the extent of preoperative phenotypic identity, the behavior of each twin (dominant or recessive), the twins' personal interdependence and individual expectations, the operative strategy (simultaneous versus sequential operations), the eventual complications, and the extent to which the operative results and postoperative appearance are identical...
