This paper reports on the design, fabrication and characterization of an all-organic photonic integrated circuit working as a switching polarizer for visible light (630nm), combining organic waveguides and liquid crystals that can be electrically driven. The device was made in commercially available epoxy by laser direct writing lithography. A device with a 2dB loss and a 20dB extinction ratio for both polarizations, was simulated; the manufactured devices proved the working principle of the design. The results have led to the design of a switching polarization splitter, in which a careful choice of waveguide material and liquid crystal can lead to devices working on a wide range of wavelengths...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of combination therapy with methylene blue (MB) assisted photodynamic therapy (PDT) and salicylic acid (SA) as chemo-therapy anticancer agent. The binding of salicylic acid to methylene blue was studied using spectrophotometric method. The results show the 1:2 complex formation between SA and MB. The binding constants and related Gibbs free energies o are obtained (Kb1 =183.74, Kb2 =38.13 and ∆Gb1 ° =12.92kJ·mol-1 , ∆Gb2 ° =9.02kJ·mol-1 ). The spectrophotometric results show the improvement in solubilization and reduction prevention for SA and MB in the complex form...

Combination of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy has been proposed for better treatment of metastatic colon cancer. In this study SN38, a highly potent cytotoxic agent, was conjugated to negatively charged hyaluronic acid (HA), which was deposited on the surface of the positively charged gold nanoparticles via electrostatic interaction. The drug conjugation and its interaction with gold nanoparticles were verified by 1 H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, respectively. The prepared SN38-HA gold NPs are negatively charged spherical nanoparticles with an average size of 75±10nm...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To compare a single treatment of PDL-PDT with PDT for BCCs in terms of efficacy, aesthetic outcome, and pain in patients with multiple BCCs. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, controlled, intra-individual, investigator-blinded study was conducted on 15 patients with 62 BCCs. The BCCs on an individual patient were divided into two similarly-sized groups, and treated with PDT (630nm LED light source, fluence rate=30mW/cm(2), total dose of 150J/cm(2)) and 585 nm-PDL-PDT (spot size=7mm, fluence=10J/cm(2), pulse duration=10ms, 10% overlap, three passes, and cooling)...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to investigate the photoinactivation of C. albicans biofilm on acrylic resin discs (the standard material for dental prosthesis) using the photosensitizers Methylene Blue and a Protoporphyrin IX. METHODS: Eighteen thermally activated Methyl Methacrylate Polymers were used for the biofilm growth of Candida albicans ATCC 10231. Two photosensitizers were tested: methylene blue (50μM) and protoporphyrin IX (10μM). Two custom-made LEDs emitting at 660nm and 630nm with approximately 800mW each were used for the irradiation, with duration ranging from 2 to 10min...

The influence of different light sources and light intensity on mycophenolic acid (MPA) by Penicillium brevicompactum in batch culture was significant and demonstrated in this study. MPA batch cultures under various light sources including fluorescent light, red LED light (630nm) and blue LED light (470nm), were investigated in a light controlled photo-bioreactor. Results of cultures under fluorescent light indicated that optimal maximum cell density and maximum MPA concentration (Pmax) achieved at 1400lux were 9...

PURPOSE: To obtain a decellularized tracheal scaffold associating traditional approaches with the novel light-emitting diode (LED) proposal. METHODS: This study was performed with New Zealand adult rabbits weighing 3.0 - 4.0 kg. Different protocols (22) were used combining physical (agitation and LED irradiation), chemical (SDS and Triton X-100 detergents), and enzymatic methods (DNase and RNase). RESULTS: Generally, the cells surrounding soft tissues were successfully removed, but none protocol removed cells from the tracheal cartilage...

OBJECTIVES: To assess the suitability and effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment and symptom relief of vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), other pre-malignant and early neoplastic conditions of the vulva in an out patient setting. METHODS: Patients were selected from the vulvoscopy clinic whilst being investigated or under long-term follow-up. PDT was offered to patients in whom other treatments had failed or were unsuitable. 5-Aminoleuvinic acid (5-ALA) was used as a topical pro-drug, inducing the photosensitiser protoporphyrin IX...

The use of endogenous Protoporphyrin IX generated through the heme biosynthetic pathway after administration of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) has led to many applications in photodynamic therapy (PDT). In Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Centro de Investigaciones sobre Porfirinas y Porfirias (CIPYP), reported for the first time, in 1975, porphyrin synthesis from ALA in highly dividing plant tissues. Increased porphyrin synthesis in tumours as well as cell photosensitisation was reported soon after. Our group is also interested in studying the use of new synthetic lipophilic derivatives of ALA as well as ALA delivery in liposomes...

While there have been a number of studies on the effects of photoperiod and duration of light and dark exposure, much less information is available on the importance of light intensity. This study investigated the effects of exposure of goldfish, Carassius auratus exposed to white fluorescent bulbs, and red (peak at 630nm), and green (530nm) light emitting diodes (LEDs) at approximately 0.9W/m(2) (12-h light:12-h dark) for four months on a number of hormones of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad (HPG) axis, in vivo and in vitro...

The present study investigated the effects of exposure to different light spectra and intensities on ovarian maturation in yellowtail damselfish, Chrysiptera parasema over a 4-months period. We used a white fluorescent bulb and three different light-emitting diodes (LEDs: red, peak at 630nm; green, 530nm; blue, 450nm), at three different intensities each (0.3, 0.6, and 0.9W/m(2)). The effects of different illuminations were assessed by measuring the mRNA and protein expressions of vitellogenin (VTG) and estrogen receptor (ER), gonadosomatic index (GSI), and plasma estradiol-17β (E2) hormone level...

BACKGROUND: Malassezia (M.) species are members of the normal part of the skin flora, but they might induce or be involved with various cutaneous diseases. Although the role of Malassezia in the pathogenesis of cutaneous diseases is not fully understood, recent studies have shown that decreased density of Malassezia led to improvement of these diseases. OBJECTIVE: To identify the antifungal effect of light emitting diode (LED) against Malassezia, its antifungal mechanisms and the impact on the keratinocytes...

BACKGROUND: The efficiency of photodynamic therapy (PDT) used in combination with Indocyanine green (ICG) and the light emitting diode (LED) on oral cancer was evaluated. The safety risk of ICG is known to be very low and ICG has a strong peak in the vicinity of 700-800nm range which is thought to be a good candidate as a photosensitizer for PDT due to the deep penetration depth into the oral cancer tissue. METHODS: The radiation intensity of homemade LED array was 50mW/cm(2) at 0...
