The EphA4 receptor tyrosine kinase plays a role in neurodegenerative diseases, inhibition of nerve regeneration, cancer progression and other diseases. Therefore, EphA4 inhibition has potential therapeutic value. Selective EphA4 kinase inhibitors are not available, but we identified peptide antagonists that inhibit ephrin ligand binding to EphA4 with high specificity. One of these peptides is the cyclic APY-d3 (βAPYCVYRβASWSC-NH2 ), which inhibits ephrin-A5 ligand binding to EphA4 with low nanomolar binding affinity and is highly protease resistant...

INTRODUCTION: Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and hemiarthroplasty (HA) are used in the management of end stage glenohumeral arthritis. Improvement in shoulder function and resolution of symptoms are high priorities for patients. The aim of this study was to compare patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) following TSA and HA. METHOD: Records from the National Joint Registry of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man were linked to the PROMs dataset...

This paper combines translational mobilisation theory and assemblage thinking to elaborate the patient trajectory concept. Deploying ethnographic research on transitions in hip fracture care in Wales (2014-2016), it describes and explains the structures and logics that condition transition interfaces, how transition infrastructures enact patients and with what effects. Comparative analysis of transition in three distinctive assemblages offers new insights into the challenges of hospital discharge and opportunities for research and improvement...

With increasing use of antibiotics, the development of antibiotic-resistant pathogens poses a serious threat to human health and the environment. Photocatalytic inactivation of these harmful pathogens is one of the novel and non-antibiotic treatments. The study fabricated Ag NPs decorated CdZnS QDs via a facile and biological co-precipitation method using L. camara plant extract as a green alternative to treat the toxic chemicals. The fabricated Ag/CdZnS QDs (NCs) were prepared for the efficient treatment of antibiotic-resistant pathogens as they raise a major global concern...

BACKGROUND: Falls are common in older adults and can devastate personal independence through injury such as fracture and fear of future falls. Methods to identify people for falls prevention interventions are currently limited, with high risks of bias in published prediction models. We have developed and externally validated the eFalls prediction model using routinely collected primary care electronic health records (EHR) to predict risk of emergency department attendance/hospitalisation with fall or fracture within 1 year...

The present study evaluated the effect of two categories of feed additives on chicken performance through immunological and intestinal histo-morphometric measurements. A total of 150 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Cobb) were randomly assigned to three groups. Group I received a non-supplemented basal diet. While groups II and III were treated with a basal diet supplemented with oregano essential oil (OEO) and Bacillus subtilis, respectively, in water for 28 days. Blood samples were taken at 6, 18 and 28 days for hematological analysis, phagocytosis, lymphocyte proliferation and measuring antibody responses...

INTRODUCTION: Animal models are regularly used to test the role of the gut microbiome in hypertension. Small-scale pre-clinical studies have investigated changes to the gut microbiome in the angiotensin II hypertensive model. However, the gut microbiome is influenced by internal and external experimental factors which are not regularly considered in the study design. Once these factors are accounted for, it is unclear if microbiome signatures are reproduceable. We aimed to determine the influence of angiotensin II treatment on the gut microbiome using a large and diverse cohort of mice and to quantify the magnitude by which other factors contribute to microbiome variations...

The purpose of the study was to compare and histologically investigate pulpal response and dentin bridge formation after direct pulp capping using recombinant amelogenin and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Recombinant amelogenin protein and MTA were used as pulp capping materials in 120 teeth from eight mongrel dogs. Dogs were sacrificed at two different evaluation times. Regenerative changes were evaluated histologically. At two weeks, in contrast to the MTA group, most of the amelogenin group showed moderately formed hard tissue formation and the pulp tissue was completely filling the entire pulp chamber...

While motor and psychiatric phenotypes in idiopathic dystonia are increasingly well understood, a few studies have examined the rate, type, and temporal pattern of other clinical co-morbidities in dystonia. Here, we determine the rates of clinical diagnoses across 13 broad systems-based diagnostic groups, comparing an overall idiopathic dystonia cohort, and sub-cohorts of cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, and dystonic tremor, to a matched-control cohort. Using the SAIL databank, we undertook a longitudinal population-based cohort study (January 1st 1994-December 31st 2017) using anonymised electronic healthcare records for individuals living in Wales (UK), identifying those diagnosed with dystonia through use of a previously validated algorithm...

In this study, a three-layered multicenter ONIOM approach is implemented to characterize the naive folding pathway of bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI). Each layer represents a distinct level of theory, where the initial layer, encompassing the entire protein, is modeled by a general all-atom force-field GFN-FF. An intermediate electronic structure layer consisting of three multicenter fragments is introduced with the state-of-the-art semiempirical tight-binding method GFN2- x TB. Higher accuracy, specifically addressing the breaking and formation of the three disulfide bonds, is achieved at the innermost layer using the composite DFT method r2 SCAN-3c...

In this study, we perform equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations employing the Green-Kubo method to investigate the influence of topological defects in three-dimensional pillared graphene networks. Similar to single-layer graphene and carbon nanotubes, the thermal conductivity ( k ) of pillared graphene systems exhibits a strong correlation with the system size ( L ), following a power-law relation k ∼ L α , where α ranges from 0...

Cleft palate repair is a common reconstructive procedure that can involve significant blood loss. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been proposed to minimise blood loss during various surgical procedures, but its effectiveness in cleft palate repair remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of TXA to reduce postoperative blood loss. Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search across multiple databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science, to identify relevant studies published up to September 2023...
