As the most promising biofuel, biobutanol is considered a competitive substitute of fossil fuels. Efficient separation of biobutanol from fermentation broth requires the application of membrane technologies. The commonly used polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane cannot meet the required demand due to its discontinuous and highly polluting thermal fabrication process. Herein, we proposed an ultraviolet (UV)-induced polymerization strategy and realize the ultrafast and continuous fabrication of the PDMS membrane...

Membranes represent one of the most promising alternatives for CO2 separation and capture. Zeolites membranes, in particular, that can withstand high temperatures and pressures, offer energy efficient way to capture CO2 compared to conventional separation techniques such as amine absorption. In this work, silicalite-1/ceramic composite membranes were prepared on the inner surface of zirconium oxide and/or titanium oxide tubular supports by a pore plugging hydrothermal synthesis. Five types of supports with different pore sizes ranging from 0...

Facile fabrication of well-intergrown, oriented zeolite membranes with tunable chemical properties on commercially proven substrates is crucial to broadening their applications for separation and catalysis. Rationally determined electrostatic adsorption can enable the direct attachment of a b-oriented silicalite-1 monolayer on a commercial porous ceramic substrate. Homoepitaxially oriented, well-intergrown zeolite ZSM-5 membranes with a tunable composition of Si/Al=25-∞ were obtained by secondary growth of the monolayer...

We investigate the structure of polyimide (PI) at the surface of a silicalite zeolite (MFI), as part of a model hybrid organic-inorganic mixed matrix membrane system, through equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Furthermore, we report a comparison of the adsorption and transport characteristics of pure components CO2 and CH4 in PI, MFI, and PI-MFI composite membranes. It is seen that incorporation of MFI zeolite into PI results in the formation of densified polymer layers (rigidified region) near the surface, having thickness around 1...

Fermentation of sugar for production of ethanol was carried out using Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells immobilized in calcium alginate films. Thin films of calcium alginate casted on a microchannel surface were used instead of the typical spherical bead configuration. Yeast immobilized on alginate films produced a higher ethanol yield than free yeast cells under the same fermentation conditions. Also, a silicalite-1/poly dimethyl siloxane composite pervaporation membrane was synthesized for ethanol separation, and characterized with flux and separation factor...

Properties of a composite material made of a continuous matrix and particles often depend on microscopic details, such as contacts between particles. Focusing on processing raw focused-ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) tomography data, we reconstructed three mixed-matrix membrane samples made of 6FDA-ODA polyimide and silicalite-1 particles. In the first step of image processing, backscattered electron (BSE) and secondary electron (SE) signals were mixed in a ratio that was expected to obtain a segmented 3D image with a realistic volume fraction of silicalite-1...

A promising route for sustainable 1-butanol (butanol) production is ABE (acetone, butanol, ethanol) fermentation. However, recovery of the products is challenging because of the low concentrations obtained in the aqueous solution, thus hampering large-scale production of biobutanol. Membrane and adsorbent-based technologies using hydrophobic zeolites are interesting alternatives to traditional separation techniques (e.g., distillation) for energy-efficient separation of butanol from aqueous mixtures. To maximize the butanol over water selectivity of the material, it is important to reduce the number of hydrophilic adsorption sites...

In the work, silicalite particles were used for the surface modification of pH-sensitive field-effect transistors (pH-FETs) with the purpose of developing new creatinine-sensitive biosensor. Creatinine deiminase (CD) adsorbed on the surface of silicalite-coated pH-FET served as a bioselective membrane. The biosensor based on CD immobilized in glutaraldehyde vapor (GA) was taken as control. The creatinine-sensitive biosensor obtained by adsorption on silicalite was shown to have better analytical characteristics (two- to threefold increased sensitivity to creatinine, three- to fourfold lesser response and recovery times, a decrease of the detection limit of creatinine determination to 5 μM, etc...

The pervaporation system yielded 73% (w/v) butanol from intact feed cultures containing 1% (w/v) butanol, and had a butanol permeation flux of 11 g m(-2) h(-1). SEM, TEM, DLS, XRD, solid-state (29)Si MAS NMR, and adsorption/desorption experiments using nitrogen, water, n-butanol, and ethanol as adsorbates were used to characterize the crystals. The single crystals have a platelike habit with a length of less than 170 nm and an aspect ratio (length/width) of about 1.2, and the thickness of the crystals is less than 40 nm. Compared with silicalite-1 crystals grown using hydroxide as mineralizing agent, the amount of structural defects in the lattice is significantly reduced and the hydrophobicity is increased...

Selective adsorption of free glycerol from crude biodiesel was investigated by using mesoporous silica spheres coated with a thin shell of microporous silicalite-1. A polycrystalline silicalite-1 shell was formed upon first covering the external surfaces of various core templates with discrete silicalite-1 nanocrystals, and this was followed by short hydrothermal treatment to ensure shell uniformity. Batch glycerol adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the ability of the sorbents to remove free glycerol selectively from crude biodiesel mixtures at various temperatures, also in comparison to that of conventional sorbents, for example, bare mesoporous silica gel spheres and zeolites...

The present study reports on the development of a characterization method of porous membrane materials which consists of considering their acoustic properties upon gas adsorption. Using acoustic microscopy experiments and atomistic molecular simulations for helium adsorbed in a silicalite-1 zeolite membrane layer, we showed that acoustic wave propagation could be used, in principle, for controlling the membranes operando. Molecular simulations, which were found to fit experimental data, showed that the compressional modulus of the composite system consisting of silicalite-1 with adsorbed He increases linearly with the He adsorbed amount while its shear modulus remains constant in a large range of applied pressures...

In this paper, we develop a novel methodology to estimate full diffusion tensors based on the detailed description of the porous network geometry through our recent advances for the characterization of such networks...
