This paper describes the results of tests on the influence of human saliva and its substitutes on tribological characteristics of friction pairs. Each pair consists of enamel and one of the following materials: ceramics, the Meridian B2 dental composite, the GK dental amalgam, and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. The saliva substitutes used were prepared using pyrophosphates, xanthan gum, and mucins dissolved in a saline buffer. The results of the tribological tests show that the values of the parameters under investigation (coefficient of friction and linear wear) were different from each other...

The present paper describes the results of tests on the influence of human saliva and its substitutes on tribological characteristics of implant materials on the example of the Ti-6Al-4V (a-Ti) titanium alloy. The saliva substitutes were prepared on the basis of pyrophosphates and mucins dissolved in saline buffer. The results of the presented tribological tests show that the values of the parameters under research varied from each other, while much similarity was observed between the evaluated level of wear characteristics after the friction process in the human saliva environment and that in the environment of one of the mucins tested...

The aim of this study was to imply the possibilities of the urgent cytological examination of synovial fluids in differential diagnosis of arthropathies and to motivate the clinicians to use this method. It gave valuable information particularly with respect to differentiate the inflammatory and non-inflammatory joint diseases. This study included 115 synovial fluids obtained by fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the swollen knee from the patients in the period between 2003 and 2008. At our department the urgent cytological examination of the synovial fluids consisted of macroscopic analysis that includes volume, colour, clarity, viscosity and mucin clot test, native microscopic analysis for crystals and tissue fragments, counting the total nucleated cell count and semiquantitative microscopic analysis for neutrophil granulocyte percentage on the slides stained with Hemacolor rapid staining...

The abnormal expression of gastric M1/MUC5AC mucin in precancerous lesions and colon cancer evidenced by immunohistochemistry led us to check for its presence in the mucus obtained directly from patients undergoing surgery for cancerous (adenocarcinoma) or inflammatory (diverticulitis or ulcerative colitis) diseases. In parallel, the authors quantified aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and their immunolabelling by M1/MUC5AC in mucosae of cancer and diverticulitis patients. Immuno-Radio-Metric Assay of M1/MUC5AC mucin developed by the authors was used to detect M1/MUC5AC mucin in the colonic mucus scraped from surgical specimens...

OBJECTIVES: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Endoscopic screening is now in favor and its use is increasing, but overall participation rates are poor. A substantial percentage of the population will likely continue to resist endoscopic screening. As such, a noninvasive biomarker for the early detection of CRC remains a priority. Herein, we (i) review the currently available noninvasive screening markers for the early detection of CRC, (ii) discuss newer markers that have undergone preliminary testing, and (iii) introduce and explain potentially promising markers of the future...

To investigate the expression of MUC6 mucin in gastric carcinomas, we generated a novel monoclonal antibody (MAb CLH5) using an MUC6 synthetic peptide. MAb CLH5 reacted exclusively with the MUC6 peptide and with native and deglycosylated mucin extracts from gastric tissues. MAb CLH5 immunoreactivity was observed in normal gastric mucosa restricted to pyloric glands of the antrum and mucopeptic cells of the neck zone of the body region. In a series of 104 gastric carcinomas, 31 (29.8%) were immunoreactive for MUC6...

A widely employed colorimetric assay for sialic acids based on periodate oxidation followed by reaction with thiobarbituric acid depends on the formation of a hexos-5-uluronic acid product, the pre-chromogen, by the periodate cleavage of the C6-C7, C7-C8, and C8-C9 bonds in free sialic acid. Glycosidically bound sialic acids are not expected to react in the assay since cleavage cannot occur between C6-C7 to yield the pre-chromogen. However, several investigators have reported the detection of a positive reaction by certain sialoglycoconjugates...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection is a leading cause of deterioration of pulmonary function in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The interaction of the bacterium with CF and non-CF tracheobronchial mucins was examined to understand the biochemical basis for the high susceptibility of the lungs of CF patients to infection by P.aeruginosa. The binding of radiolabelled bacteria to pure mucins in solid-phase assays was not significantly above non-specific binding to various blocking agents, such as bovine serum albumin, Tween 20, milk powder and polyvinyl pyrrolidine...

BACKGROUND: Enterochromaffinlike (ECL) cell carcinoids recently observed in rats stimulated new interest in gastric endocrine tumors arising in humans. METHODS: Paraffin-embedded sections of 55 endocrine tumor cases were stained with H&E, mucin tests were performed, and immunoperoxidase was used for detecting endocrine markers; 23 cases were also investigated ultrastructurally. RESULTS: Forty-five argyrophil carcinoids, 9 neuroendocrine carcinomas, and 1 gastrinoma were identified...

A sensitive colorimetric assay for detecting mucins and glycoproteins rich in O-glycosidically linked saccharides is reported. The method combines the susceptibility of N-acetylgalactosamine terminating O-glycosidically linked saccharides to beta-elimination with the Morgan-Elson reaction for N-acetylhexosamines with free reducing ends. All mucin and mucin-type glycoproteins but none of the serum-type glycoproteins tested resulted in characteristic color production. All mucins tested gave linear responses in the range 5 to 200 micrograms and the assay was also adapted to the microscale involving the use of 96-well microtiter plates...

The enzyme D-galactose oxidase (GO) oxidizes the carbon-6 position of the hydroxyl groups of galactose-N-acetyl galactosamine, which are commonly present in colon cancer cells and in rectal mucin of patients with colon cancer. We have studied the marker disaccharide galactose and N-acetylgalactosamine on tissue sections by the GO-Schiff reagent in normal, preneoplastic, and neoplastic human colorectal epithelial and compared it with peanut agglutinin reactivity. Fifty-seven (81.4%) of 70 carcinomas, 83.3% (10/12) of precancerous lesions, 50% (10/20) of the mucosa remote from cancer, and 58...

Although microscopic studies have shown similarities between bursal and joint membranes, little is known about bursae and their response to disease states. Eighty-six cases of superficial bursitis due to trauma, bacterial infection, or gout were reviewed and compared with cases of joint inflammation due to the same etiologies. In traumatic bursitis the bursal fluid mucin test was more abnormal and the viscosity lower than that of joint fluid in traumatic arthritis. The bursal fluid total leukocyte count of septic bursitis was less than 20,000/mm3 in 8 of 13 cases but in only 1 of 21 synovial fluids from cases of septic arthritis (P = 0...
