BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vein isolation with cryoballoon catheter ablation (CCB) is an effective method of treatment in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), but in patients with heart failure (HF) the role of CCB remains unknown. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of CCB in patients with HF and cardiac im-plantable electronic devices (CIEDs), the impact of the procedure on symptoms, and echocardiographic parameters...

The study is presenting own experience with the use of percutaneous balloon angioplasty in the patients with the strictures of ureteroenteric anastomoses. A study group consisted of 11 patients with urinary bladder cancer in whom ureteroenteric anastomosis was performed. All patients developed in the postoperative period ureter strictures or the stenosis at the junction point of ureteroenterostomy resulting in retention of urea in the ureter and pyelocalyceal system requiring percutaneous nephrostomy. High-pressure balloon catheter inserted through the nephrostomy was placed centrally in the point of stenosis...

Stent dislodgement and migration is a rare but serious complication of stent usage. For extraction of unexpanded stents different techniques have been described previously. We describe a case which used small baloon catheter for retrieval of a stent from the SVG-RCA.

REVIEW
K Celiński, H Cichoz-Lach
The role of therapeutic endoscopy in current gastroenterology is very important. Therapuetic endoscopy is useful in treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding. Endoscopic control of gastrointestinal bleeding includes the following procedures of haemostasis techniques: photocoagulation, electrocoagulation, thermocoagulation and injection method. Owing to these procedures mortality has significantly decreased. Endoscopic hemostasis eliminates the risk of surgery, is less expensive and better tolerated by patients...

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of low dose misoprostol as a ripening agent compared to the widely used balloon catheter in developing countries is undetermined. OBJECTIVE: To compare the safety and efficacy of a low dose intravaginal misoprostol and intracervical Foley's catheter for cervical ripening. DESIGN: A prospective randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Zonal General Hospital, Kwale, Nigeria from June 1, 1998 to May 30, 2001...

The technical performance and results of selective salpingography (SGS) in 28 infertile women with proximal tubal occlusion (PTO) are presented. In 50 cases of PTO, diagnosed first by hysterosalpingography (HSG) and/or laparoscopy, 14 oviducts (28%) were patent during initial HSG using the baloon catheter tightly filling the internal cervical orificium and from remaining 36 tubes 27 (75%) were successfully recanalized by SGS. Three patients after successful SGS became pregnant. One of the pregnancies was ectopic...

SETTING: Cardiac catheterisation Laboratories of Mater Misericordiae Hospital (1997) and Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi(1994). PATIENTS: Twenty four consecutive patients with symptomatic severe pure mitral stenosis (less than 2+ mitral regurgitation) and suitable mitral valve apparatus(leaflets, chordae and papillary muscles) for successful commissurotomy...

The causes of nasolacrimal duct stenosis in adults can vary greatly. In general, the symptoms can also vary, but most cases share a tendency toward recurring inflammations in the prestenotic area. The treatment of these disorders is limited to either conservative therapy to control inflammation or surgically invasive measures. By using balloon catheters, usually applied in percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), dilation of the relative postsaccal stenosis can be performed under radiographic control...

Diffuse and circumferential calcification of the patent ductus arteriosus is a rare finding frequently associated with severe pulmonary artery hypertension. Under this circumstance, closure of the patent ductus arteriosus by ligation in continuity or by division and suture is hazardous if not impossible. Endoaortic closure of the ductus with a prosthetic patch has been proposed as an alternate and safer procedure. This paper describes an improved operative technique for intra-aortic closure of a calcified patent ductus arteriosus employing a heparin-coated shunt to permit aortic cross-clamping and an intraluminal baloon catheter to control bleeding from the pulmonary artery...

The authors describe the method of baloonization used in the treatment of intracranial vascular anomalies. The method was used in the treatment of 7 cases with these anomalies in a period from 1979 up to now. For the procedure patients were qualified after angiography. In 4 cases this investigation showed presence of carotid-cavernous fistula which developed in 3 cases after trauma and in one cases spontaneously. In another 3 patients arteriovenous angioma was diagnosed, in 2 of them the malformation was situation in the cerebral hemisphere and in one in the coverings of the skull...

COMPARATIVE STUDY

To assess the validity of myocardial imaging with potassium-43 (43K) early after the onset of ischemia, the left anterior descending artery was occluded with a baloon tip catheter in 32 intact anesthetized dogs. 99mTechnetium ventriculograms localized the left ventricle. 43K was administered intravenously and serial images were obtained in four views using an Anger camera with a pinhole collimator. The heart was arrested after 60 minutes and removed for imaging and tissue counts to ascertain extracardiac and geometric factors...

While performing 152 reconstructive operations for obliterating lesions of large arteries of the lower extremities, the authors observed early acute thromboses of the graft in 12 patients (following operations on the femoropopliteal region and crural arteries). Of 12 patients 7 subjects were reoperated upon. In 6 cases indirect thrombectomy from the autovenous shunt or endarterectomized arterial segment by a baloon catheter proved to be quite feasible. The patients were discharged with adequate compensation of the extremity circulation...

As part of an effort to develop a longterm animal model simulating the effects of acoustic neuromas, a series of shortterm electrophysiological experiments were performed in the cat. The eighth nerve, as it exits the internal auditory meatus, was exposed and a silicone baloon catheter secured over the nerve. Pure tones and clicks were introduced ipsilaterally and primary evoked potentials were recorded from the contralateral auditory cortex. Alterations in the evoked potentials were examined as the baloons were inflated and deflated...

Inferior v. cava pressure (IVCP) was raised in the dog by a baloon catheter introduced via the jugular vein. Hepatic artery flow (HAF) and portal venous flow (PVF) were measured with the electromagnetic flow meter. The increase of IVCP reduced uniformly HAF and PVF, the relative contribution of the two vessels to the HBF did not change. The relationship between IVCP increase and HAF reduction and between the decrease of AP-IVCP and the reduction of HAF was linear. There was no sign of autoregulation or vasomotor regulation of HAF...

Nine previously unreported rectal injuries caused by barium-enema examinations have been reviewed. In each case, the injury occurred in conjunction with inflation of a rectal balloon. Analysis of the clinical material suggested that certain mechanical properties of balloon catheter tips might transfer mechanical stress to the rectal wall and contribute to the observed injuries. Careful manometric evaluation of in vivo rectal balloons suggest that significant anatomic differences in patients may be clinically important...

Using baloon catheters in the inferior vena cava, post-hepatic blocks were produced in experimental animals. Subsequent liver perfusion scintigraphy showed marked reduction in portal flow. The significance of these findings in the diagnosis of the Budd-Chiari syndrome and its differentiation by scintigraphy from an intrahepatic block in cirrhosis of the liver is discussed.
