Over the last few years, evidence has accumulated to suggest that hypertension is, at least in part, an immune-mediated inflammatory disorder. Many links between immunity and hypertension have been established and provide a complex framework of mechanistic interactions contributing to the rise in BP. These include immune-mediated inflammatory processes affecting regulatory brain nuclei and interactions with other mediators of cardiovascular regulation such as the sympathetic nervous system. Sympathoexcitation differentially regulates T-cells based upon activation status of the immune cell as well as the resident organ...

After more than four billion years of evolution, nature has created a large number of fascinating living organisms, which show numerous peculiar structures and wonderful properties. Nature can provide sources of plentiful inspiration for scientists to create various materials and devices with special functions and uses. Since Messersmith proposed the fabrication of multifunctional coatings through mussel-inspired chemistry, this field has attracted considerable attention for its promising and exiciting applications...

The symptoms of acute poisoning caused by ingestion of bialaphos (BIAL), an ingredient of herbicide, are supposed to be due to the L-glufosinate (L-GLUF), which is formed by the degradation of bialaphos. To elucidate the pharmacokinetics of BIAL and L-GLUF, we attempted a simultaneous analysis of BIAL and L-GLUF in biological samples by exploiting a reversed phase HPLC method. The derivatization reaction of BIAL and L-GLUF using (+) -1- (9-fluorenyl) ethyl chloroformate was completed in 30 min at 40 degrees C and both derivatives were stable for 48 hr at 25 degrees C...

Fluorophotometric determinations of cobalt(II) and hydrogen peroxide were investigated by using the fluorescence reaction between fluorescein-hydrazide (fl-NHNH(2)), and/or hydrogen peroxide, cobalt(II), respectively. The calibration graphs were liner in the range of 0-6.0 ng cobalt(II) and 0-1000 ng hydrogen peroxide per 10 ml at an emission wavelength (E(m)) of 530 nm with an exicitation wavelength (E(x)) of 508 nm, respectively. These proposed methods were selective and simple, and the effect of foreign ions was negligible in comparison with conventional reported methods such as nitroso R,4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol(PAR), alizarin, pyridine-2-aldehyde-2-pyridinehydrazone, stilbazo-cobalt(II), etc...

PURPOSE: To review the current status of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy in the prostate, in particular the treatment of prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two trans-rectal devices are currently in clinical use; the SonablateR500 and AblathermR. These devices are compared and similarities and differences highlighted. RESULTS: Outcomes from the primary treatment of prostate cancer, and HIFU as a salvage therapy are discussed...

The density functional theory (DFT) calculations in different approximations have been performed for the geometries and vibrational states of the trans-glyoxal molecule in the ground state S0 (X1Ag) and in the lowest excited triplet state T1 (a3Au, n-pi* type). Eight typical combinations of exchange and correlation functionals have been used. Comparative Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations have also been performed. For the open shell a3Au state the standard spin-unrestricted Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham approaches (UHF, UKS) as well as the restricted open-shell versions (ROHF, ROKS) have been applied...

The hairlet follicle of the wild Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout 1769) differs from the other follicles in position and in structural characteristics. As an element of the guard (tylotrich) hair follicle group the hairlet follicles are arranged at the margin of the hair disk. The hairlet follicle, which produces the finest hair fibre, is enclosed by an active unilobular sebaceous gland. The arrector pili muscle is absent, but the follicle does have a supply of lanceolate nerve endings and Ruffini endings...

Addition of the excitatory amino acids l-glutamate, l-aspartate and their analogues kainate and N-methyl-d-aspartate to incubated slices of adult rat cerebellum led to large increases in cyclic GMP levels. The order of apparent potencies was kainate greater than N-methyl-d-aspartate greater than glutamate and aspartate. D-alpha-aminoadipate and Mg2-+ inhibited responses to N-methyl-d-aspartate while glutamic acid diethyl ester was most effective against those to glutamate; responses to kainate were least affected by the antagonists...

Instrumentation has been developed to detect rapidly the polarization of tryptophan fluorescence from single muscle fibers in rigor, relaxation, and contraction. The polarization parameter (P( perpendicular)) obtained by exiciting the muscle tryptophans with light polarized perpendicular to the long axis of the muscle fiber had a magnitude P( perpendicular) (relaxation) > P( perpendicular) (contraction) > P( perpendicular) (rigor) for the three types of muscle fibers examined (glycerinated rabbit psoas, glycerinated dorsal longitudinal flight muscle of Lethocerus americanus, and live semitendinosus of Rana pipiens)...

The degradation of phenylbutazone was studied in the presence of lakes suitable for coloring the sugar coats of phenylbutazone tablets. The drug was degraded, in light, in the presence of erythrosine sodium. The degradation probably proceeds via singlet oxygen generated by the light-exicited dye. The degradation may be important in some quality control procedures and can lead, for example, to unusual results in dissolution rate testing.

Three biotelemetric examinations and a whole night sleep recording were carried out in a 8 year old child whose behavior alternated between exicitation and autism. The E.E.G. showed 5 Hz. temporo-parietal sharp wave discharges lasting from 1 second to 20 minutes. These discharges were at times unilateral and predominantly right sided, at other times being bilateral without clinical signs and unrelated to changes in behavior. The possibility of internal regulation of discharge of discharge production or their dependence on induced situations or psychophysiological states is considered...

The stimulus generated at the sinus node induces on the heart working cells a stronger contraction at higher frequences. The purpose of the present report is to investigate whether the two effects a) exicitation-contraction coupling and b) contraction strength are independent. Instead of the pace-maker it has been used a rectangular waves generator; the pulses are applied to isolated guinea-pig auricle or rat right ventricle. The AA. show a stronger twitch of cell when the membrane is depolarized without contraction...

The resonance Raman (RR) spectra of oxidized, reduced, and oxidized cyanide-bound cytochrome c oxidase with excitation at several wavelengths in the 600-nm region are presented. No evidence is found for laser-induced photoreduction of the oxidized protein with irradiation at lambda approximately 600 nm at 195 K, in contrast to the predominance of this process upon irradiation in the Soret region at this temperature. The Raman spectra of all three protein species are very similar, and there are no Raman bands which are readily assignable to either cytochrome a or cytochrome a3 exclusively...
