Acne vulgaris is the most frequent and multifactorial inflammatory skin disorder in all races. Obesity is considered to be a risk factor for acne due to its contribution to inflammation. The involvements of inflammatory (leptin and resistin) and anti-inflammatory (adiponectin) adipokines in the pathogenesis of acne were reported. Omentin resembles adiponectin in terms of having inhibitory effect on tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) induced inflammation, a vital process in the acne formation. This study was designed to investigate the putative involvement of omentin in acne formation...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Isotretinoin, the drug of choice for severe acne, might be associated with a decrease in insulin sensitivity. Adiponectin is an adipose tissue-derived protein that increases insulin sensitivity. In this study, we aimed to investigate adiponectin levels in postadolescent severe acne and the effect of isotretinoin on adiponectin levels. METHODS: Participants included 18 female patients with severe acne and 18 healthy women matched for age and body mass index (BMI)...

Two Caucasian girls, both of normal weight and body mass indices, were diagnosed with type A insulin resistance (IR) in childhood. Case 1 presented with premature adrenarche aged 7 years, then by age 12 years had hirsutism, acne, acanthosis nigricans, and asymptomatic diabetes. Subsequent investigation revealed raised adiponectin (15.3 mg/L) and heterozygous p.Pro1205Leu mutation in the INSR gene encoding the insulin receptor. She experienced postprandial hypoglycaemia on metformin; acarbose was trialled and discontinued aged 16 years, as she became normoglycaemic...

BACKGROUND: The research evaluating adipokines are very few in patients with acne vulgaris. The hypothesis that hyperinsulinemic and high glycemic index diet plays a role in the pathogenesis of acne is still controversial. In this study, we aimed to evaluate adipokines such as leptin (L), adiponectin (A), ghrelin and A levels, and A/L rates that indicate insulin resistance in nonobese patients with severe acne vulgaris. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Thirty patients who are nonobese with moderate acne vulgaris, aged 18 to 25 years, and 15 age-sex compatible controls were included in our study...

In addition to producing sebum, sebocytes link lipid metabolism with inflammation at a cellular level and hence, greatly resemble adipocytes. However, so far no analysis was performed to identify and characterize the adipocyte-associated inflammatory proteins, the members of the adipokine family in sebocytes. Therefore, we determined the expression profile of adipokines [adiponectin, interleukin (IL) 6, resistin, leptin, serpin E1, visfatin, apelin, chemerin, retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP1)] in sebaceous glands of healthy and various disease-affected (acne, rosacea, melanoma and psoriasis) skin samples...

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine cause of menstrual irregularities, hirsutism and acne. Women with PCOS present elevated plasma insulin levels, both fasting and after a glucose load, as an indirect evidence of insulin resistance. PCOS women may also present hypertension, low levels of HDL cholesterol, hypertriglyceridemia, visceral obesity and a higher level of CRP and fibrinogen that can predict an atherosclerotic risk. METHODS: This study was carried out on 15 young women with PCOS selected according to the 2003 diagnostic criteria of The Rotterdam Consensus Statement and 15 Control women...

13-cis-Retinoic acid treatment causes insulin resistance and disturbances in lipid and glucose metabolism. We studied how 13-cis-retinoic acid affects inflammatory factors and adiponectin. A total of 23 healthy patients (age, 24.9 +/- 0.9 years; body mass index, 22.6 +/- 0.7 kg/m(2)) who received 13-cis-retinoic acid treatment of acne participated in the study. The patients were studied before the treatment, after 3 months of therapy, and 1 month after the treatment. Inflammatory parameters were measured, and a 4-hour oral glucose tolerance test was performed at each visit...

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: We previously reported that treatment of acne with 13-cis-retinoic acid causes insulin resistance and disturbances in lipid metabolism resembling those of the insulin-resistance syndrome. It is not known whether this is associated with alterations in the concentrations of serum adiponectin, an insulin-sensitising hormone secreted by adipocytes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven men (age 24+/-2 years, BMI 22.1+/-0.9 kg/m(2)) received 13-cis-retinoic acid (Roaccutan) treatment for acne for an average of 5 months...

Currently used to treat severe acne, 13-cis-retinoic acid (13-cis-RA) is under investigation for its anticancer effects as is the isomer, all-trans-retinoic acid (all-trans-RA). Here, the effects of oral 13-cis-RA or all-trans-RA treatment on serum chemistry, leptin and adiponectin levels were evaluated. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were gavaged once daily for 7 consecutive days with 13-cis-RA (7.5 or 15 mg kg(-1)), all-trans-RA (10 or 15 mg kg(-1)) (n=24/sex/dose), or soy oil (n=16/sex) and blood was sampled 30-480 min after the last gavage...
