Acetylene production from mixed α-olefins emerges as a potentially green and energy-efficient approach with significant scientific value in the selective cleavage of C-C bonds. On the Pd(100) surface, it is experimentally revealed that C2 to C4 α-olefins undergo selective thermal cleavage to form surface acetylene and hydrogen. The high selectivity toward acetylene is attributed to the 4-fold hollow sites which are adept at severing the terminal double bonds in α-olefins to produce acetylene...

Understanding solvent-solute interactions is essential to designing and synthesising soft materials with tailor-made functions. Although the interaction of the solute with the solvent mixture is more complex than the single solvent medium, solvent mixtures are exciting to unfold several unforeseen phenomena in supramolecular chemistry. Here we report two unforeseen pathways observed during the hierarchical assembly of cationic perylene diimides (cPDIs) in a water and amphiphilic organic solvent (AOS) mixtures...

Conductive π-d conjugated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted wide concerns in electrocatalysis due to their intrinsic high conductivity. However, the poor electrocatalytic stability is still a major problem that hinders the practical application of MOFs. Herein, we report a novel approach to enhancing the stability of MOF-based electrocatalyst, namely, the introduction of hydrogen bonds (H-bonds). Impressively, the π-d conjugated MOF FeCo3 (DDA)2 exhibits ultra-high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) stability (up to 2000 h)...

Development of nano-enabled fertilizers from green waste is one of the effective options to enhance global agricultural productions and minimize environmental pollution. In this study, novel, eco-friendly and cost-effective nano- enabled fertilizers (NEF) were synthesized using the planetary ball milling procedure. The NEF (nDPF1and nDPF2) were prepared by impregnation of nanostructured date palm pits (nDPP) with (KH2 PO4  + MgO) at 1:1 and 3:1 (w/w) ratios respectively. The nDPP, nDPF1 and nDPF2 were extensively characterized...

Chitobiose (COS2 ) efficiently lowers lipids in vivo and facilitates butyric acid enrichment during human fecal fermentation. However, whether COS2 can interact with butyric acid to generate a hypolipidemic effect remains unclear. This study examined the hypolipidemic mechanism of COS2 involving butyric acid, which could alleviate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The results revealed that COS2 administration modulated the β-oxidation pathway in the liver and restructured the short chain fatty acids in the fecal of ob/ob-/- mice...

Graphene/polydopamine aerogels (GPDX AG, where X represents the weight ratio of DA·HCl to GO) were prepared by the chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO) using dopamine (DA) and l-ascorbic acid as reducing agents. During the gelation process, DA was polymerized to form polydopamine (PDA). The introduction of PDA in the gelation of aerogels led to a deeper reduction of GO and stronger interactions between graphene nanosheets forced by covalent cross-linking and noncovalent bonding including π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding...

The proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE), crucial for green hydrogen production, is challenged by the scarcity and high cost of iridium-based materials. Cobalt oxides, as ideal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), have not been extensively applied in PEMWE, due to extremely high voltage and poor stability at large current density, caused by complicated structural variations of cobalt compounds during the OER process. Thus, the authors sought to introduce chromium into a cobalt spinel (Co3 O4 ) catalyst to regulate the electronic structure of cobalt, exhibiting a higher oxidation state and increased Co-O covalency with a stable structure...

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising next-generation energy storage devices, yet suffer from the issues of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and intricate side reactions on the Zn anode surface. The hydrogen (H)-bond networks play a critical role in interfacial proton transport that may closely relate to HER but are rarely investigated.Herein, we report a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) strategy which is constructed by anchoring ionic liquid cations on Ti3C2Tx substrate for HER-free Zn anode. Molecule dynamics simulations reveal that the rationally designed SAM with a high coordination number of water molecules (25~27, 4~6 for Zn2+) largely reduces the interfacial densities of H2O molecules, therefore breaking the connectivity of H-bond networks and blocking proton transport on the interface, by which the HER is suppressed...

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are emerging porous materials that show high structural flexibility, mild synthetic conditions, good solution processability, easy healing and regeneration, and good recyclability. Although these properties give them many potential multifunctional applications, their frameworks are unstable due to the presence of only weak and reversible hydrogen bonds. In this work, the development history and synthesis methods of HOFs are reviewed, and categorize their structural design concepts and strategies to improve their stability...

Autoimmune inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ulcerative colitis, are associated with an uncontrolled production of cytokines leading to the pronounced inflammatory response of these disorders. Their therapy is currently focused on the inhibition of cytokine receptors, such as the Janus kinase (JAK) protein family. Tofacitinib and peficitinib are JAK inhibitors that have been recently approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, an in-depth analysis was carried out through quantum biochemistry to understand the interactions involved in the complexes formed by JAK1 and tofacitinib or peficitinib...

Ceramic coatings that can effectively prevent hydrogen permeation have a wide range of applications in hydrogen energy and nuclear fusion reactors. In this study, for the first time, the internal stress of Er2 O3 coatings was found to be a key factor that could determine their hydrogen permeation resistance and lifespan. The internal stress was controlled by designing layered Er2 O3 coatings. The internal stress increased with an increasing number of Er2 O3 layers. When the number of layers was below 15, the increased internal stress did not adversely affect the coating performance and might help to increase its hydrogen permeation resistance...

Heparan sulfate (HS) is a glycosaminoglycan, polysaccharides that are considered to have arisen in the last common unicellular ancestor of multicellular animals. In this light, the large interactome of HS and its myriad functions in relation to the regulation of cell communication are not surprising. The binding of proteins to HS determines their localisation and diffusion, essential for embryonic development and homeostasis. Following the biosynthesis of the initial heparosan polymer, the subsequent modifications comprise an established canonical pathway and a minor pathway...

The MPB-NO@DOX + ATRA gel was fabricated by mixing a thrombin solution, a fibrinogen solution containing all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), and a Mn/NO-based immune nano-activator termed MPB-NO@DOX.
