BACKGROUND: Previous literature on dairy products and risk of breast cancer is inconsistent, and the relationship may depend on the life-period of dietary assessment. OBJECTIVE: We examined dairy consumption from adolescence through later adulthood and incidence of breast cancer by menopausal status and tumor molecular subtypes in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS), a prospective cohort study. DESIGN: We analyzed data from 63,847 females in the NHS collected from 1980 to 2018...

BACKGROUND: The plant-based Portfolio dietary pattern includes recognized cholesterol-lowering foods (ie, plant protein, nuts, viscous fiber, phytosterols, and plant monounsaturated fats) shown to improve several cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in randomized controlled trials. However, there is limited evidence on the role of long-term adherence to the diet and CVD risk. The primary objective was to examine the relationship between the Portfolio Diet Score (PDS) and the risk of total CVD, coronary heart disease (CHD), and stroke...

IMPORTANCE: Although the EAT-Lancet Commission has recently proposed a planetary health diet (PHD) to promote human and environmental health, little is known about how PHD affects environment and mortality risk among an Asian population. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a PHD score is associated with environmental impacts and mortality outcomes in a Chinese cohort living in Singapore. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from the Singapore Chinese Health Study...

BACKGROUND: The Global Diet Quality Score (GDQS) was developed for monitoring nutrient adequacy and diet-related noncommunicable disease risk in diverse populations. A software application (GDQS app) was developed for the standardized collection of GDQS data. The application involves a simplified 24-h dietary recall (24HR) where foods are matched to GDQS-food groups using an onboard database, portion sizes are estimated at the food group level using cubic models, and the GDQS is computed...

BACKGROUND: Consumption of both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee has been reported to attenuate long-term weight gain. Whether the association between coffee consumption and weight gain depends on the addition of sugar, cream, or coffee whitener remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to study the associations between changes in coffee consumption, caffeine intake, and weight changes by considering the addition of sugar, cream, or a nondairy coffee whitener. METHODS: We used 3 large prospective cohorts - the Nurses' Health Study (1986 - 2010), Nurses' Health Study II (1991 - 2015) and Health Professional Follow-up Study (1991 - 2014)...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little is known regarding the association between intestinal motility patterns and cognitive function in individuals who are baseline cognitively healthy. The gut microbiome may contribute to the association. We examined the association between bowel movement (BM) pattern and cognitive function and explored the role of the gut microbiome in explaining this association. Worldwide dietary guidelines in the late 20th century promoted a low-fat diet, based in part on the notion that dietary fat, the most energy dense macronutrient, causes excess weight gain. However, high-quality evidence accumulating since then refute a direct association between dietary fat and adiposity. Moreover, substitution of carbohydrates for unsaturated fat can increase insulin resistence and cardiometabolic disease, especially among populations with highly prevalent insulin resistance. In this context, the recent World Health Organization conditional recommendation to carry forward the guidance to limit dietary fat to <30% seems ill-advised and should be reconsidered...

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the associations of individual dietary sugars with CHD risk. METHODS: In prospective cohort studies, we followed 76,815 women (Nurses' Health Study, 1980-2020) and 38,878 men (Health Professionals Follow-up Study, 1986-2016). BACKGROUND: The standardized scoring system assessing adherence to the 2018 World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF)/American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) cancer prevention recommendations assigns equal weight for each recommendation, thereby giving higher weight to dietary factors collectively (5 points) than adiposity (1 point) and physical activity (1 point). BACKGROUND: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs) are the leading cause of worldwide adult mortality. Although broad classes of dietary fats have been shown to alter ASCVD risk, the roles that individual dietary fatty acids play in influencing ASCVD risk are unclear. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective cohort study was to examine the relationships of the total fat classes and individual fatty acids with the risk of ASCVD. METHODS: The Million Veteran Program is a prospective cohort whereby dietary intake of fatty acids was assessed in 158,198 participants that had enrolled between January 2011 and November 2018 and were free of ASCVD at baseline...

Plant-based diets have become increasingly popular thanks to their purported health benefits and more recently for their positive environmental impact. Prospective studies suggest that consuming vegetarian diets is associated with a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, hypertension, dementia, and cancer. Data from randomized clinical trials have confirmed a protective effect of vegetarian diets for the prevention of diabetes and reductions in weight, blood pressure, glycosylated haemoglobin and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, but to date, no data are available for cardiovascular event rates and cognitive impairment, and there are very limited data for cancer...

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in older adults. Investigating shared genetic components between metabolites and AMD can enhance our understanding of its pathogenesis. We conduct metabolite genome-wide association studies (mGWASs) using multi-ethnic genetic and metabolomic data from up to 28,000 participants. With bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis involving 16,144 advanced AMD cases and 17,832 controls, we identify 108 putatively causal relationships between plasma metabolites and advanced AMD...

Population attributable risk (PAR%) reflects the preventable fraction of disease. However, PAR% estimates of cancer have shown large variation across populations, methods, data sources, and timing of measurements. Three statistical methods to estimate PAR% were identified from a systematic literature review: the Levin's formula, the comparative incidence rate method, and the comparative risk assessment method.
