Comparative study of nonlinear optical properties of red fluorescent coumarins was carried out with density functional theory based ab initio method using the popular global hybrid (GH) and range separated hybrid (RSH) functionals and correlated with the spectroscopic values. The GHs - M06 L, PBE1PBE, M06, BHHLYP, M062X and M06HF and RSHs - HISSbPBE, wB97, wB97X, HSEH1PBE, CAM-B3LYP and wB97XD in combination with the double zeta basis function 6-311 + G(d,p) were used. The computed polarizability (α0 ), hyperpolarizability of the first order (β0 ) and second order (γ) computed by the RSHs are closer to the spectroscopic values compared to GHs...

The geometrical structures and properties of the M8 O12 , M8 O12 H8 , and M8 O12 H12 clusters are explored using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation for all 3d-metals M from Sc to Zn. It is found that the geometries and total spin magnetic moments of the clusters depended strongly on the 3d-atom type and the hydrogenation extent. More than the half of all of the 30 clusters had singlet lowest total energy states, which could be described as either nonmagnetic or antiferromagnetic...

The ingredients normally required to achieve topological superconductivity (TSC) are Cooper pairing, broken inversion symmetry, and broken time-reversal symmetry. We present a theoretical exploration of the possibility of using ultrathin films of superconducting metals as a platform for TSC. Because they necessarily break inversion symmetry when prepared on a substrate and have intrinsic Cooper pairing, they can be TSCs when time-reversal symmetry is broken by an external magnetic field. Using microscopic density functional theory calculations we show that, for ultrathin Pb and β-Sn superconductors, the position of the Fermi level can be tuned to quasi-2D band extrema energies using strain, and that the g factors of states at time-reversal invariant momenta can be extremely large, enhancing the influence of external magnetic fields...

Of the many mammalian KAP genes (KRTAPs) identified, KRTAP20-1 has been described in humans, but it has not been described in any other species. The quasiparticle band structures of the ordered L12 and L10 phases of Nix Pt1-x (x = 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75) have been calculated and compared to the band structures obtained using density functional theory. For each alloy, an increase in the curvature of the band structure is generally seen when the quasiparticle correction is made. Composite systems of P25 (titania) functionalized with thioglycolic acid (TGA)-capped CdTe colloidal quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized, structurally characterized and photocatalytically tested in the photocatalytic NOx oxidation and storage (PHONOS) during NO (g) + O2 (g) reaction. Pure P25 yielded moderate-to-high NO conversion (31% in UV-A and 40% in VIS) but exhibited extremely poor selectivity towards NOx storage in solid state (25% in UV-A and 35% in VIS). Therefore, P25 could efficiently photo-oxidize NO (g) + O2 (g) into NO2, however failed to store photo-generated NO2 and released toxic NO2 (g) to the atmosphere...
