Lignocellulosic biomasses, exhibit resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis due to the presence of lignin and hemicellulose. Ionic liquids proved their applicability in lignin degradation, however, ionic liquid removal has to be performed to proceed to hydrolysis. Therefore, this study reports an in situ hydrolysis of empty fruit bunches (EFB) that combined an ionic liquid (IL) pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. For enzyme production, palm kernel cake (PKC) was used as the primary media for microbial cellulase (PKC-Cel) from Trichoderma reesei (RUTC30)...

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the primary etiological agent responsible for cervical cancer in women. Although in total 16 high-risk HPV strains have been identified so far. Currently available commercial vaccines are designed by targeting mainly HPV16 and HPV18 viral strains as these are the most common strains associated with cervical cancer. Because of the high level of antigenic specificity of HPV capsid antigens, the currently available vaccines are not suitable to provide cross-protection from all other high-risk HPV strains...

OBJECTIVES: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a rare syndrome. The pathophysiology is poorly understood. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are characteristic of the diagnosis and diffusion weighted image has been also suggested having a prognostic value. We report this unusual neurologic complication of peripartumin except any pre-existent pathology of the pregnancy. MATERIEL AND METHODS: CT, MR findings and relevant clinical data of the patients were retrospectively reviewed on 5 cases between 2011 and 2012 in our radiologic department...

Actinomycosis is a slowly progressive, chronic infectious disease. It is caused by the genus Actinomyces, which are gram-positive anaerobic bacteria. It presents as a mass-like lesion, composed of bacterial nidus and characteristic granulomatous inflammatory fibrosis. As such, it has frequently been mistaken for a malignancy. Surgical resection is a common procedure in these patients prior to a definite diagnosis. Although actinomycosis can occur in a variety of regions, including oral-cervicofacial, thoracic, and abdominopelvic cavities, the involvement of the pancreas is very rare...

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) syndrome is a relatively rare disease, characterized by the occurrence of multiple endocrine tumors in the parathyroid and pituitary glands as well as the pancreas. Here, we report a case of MEN1 with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) in the stomach, duodenum, and pancreas. A 53-year-old man visited our hospital to manage gastric NET. Five years prior to his visit, he had undergone surgery for incidental meningioma. His brother had pancreatic nodules and a history of surgery for adrenal adenoma...

A 46-year-old woman visited our hospital presenting throat pain and globus sensation. The symptoms occurred seven days after eating raw perch and mullet. An endoscopy under sedation showed a fluke-with an approximate length of 4.8 mm and width of 1.5 mm-on the left aryepiglottic fold, with active motility on the mucosa. It was extracted from the larynx using biopsy forceps and was identified as Clinostomum complanatum. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second reported case of human infection with Clinostomum complanatum diagnosed and treated by an endoscopy in Korea...

Objective Lactic acidosis has been associated with the use of metformin since its introduction. The cause, however, is highly controversial. The incidence of metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) is quoted at 3,0 to 16,7 cases per 100 000 patient-years according to current studies. The link between metformin and lactic acidosis in metformin therapy has been suggested to be causal and therefore, the use of metformin was restricted to type 2 diabetic patients without renal impairment. Recent studies, however, show an acceptable use and no increased incidence of lactic acidosis in chronic mild to moderate renal insufficiency, respectively...

Objective Risk factors for placental abruption have changed, but there has not been an updated systematic review investigating outcomes. Methods We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and CINAHL for publications from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2016. We reviewed English-language publications reporting estimated incidence and/or risk factors for maternal, labor, delivery, and perinatal outcomes associated with abruption. We excluded case studies, conference abstracts, and studies that lacked a referent/comparison group or did not clearly characterize placental abruption...

Background and Objectives: Elder financial exploitation, committed by individuals in positions of trust, and elder fraud, committed by predatory strangers, are two forms of financial victimization that target vulnerable older adults. This study analyzes differences between fraud and financial exploitation victims and tests routine activity theory as a contextual model for victimization. Routine activity theory predicts that criminal opportunities arise when a motivated offender and suitable target meet in the absence of capable guardians...

Growing evidence suggests some individuals may exhibit dependence to ultraviolet light, a known carcinogen; however, few studies have investigated predictors of tanning dependence (TD).A sub-set of early-onset basal cell carcinoma case-control study participants completed an online survey. The modified-Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty, Eye-opener (mCAGE) and a questionnaire based on the addiction criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (mDSM-IV-TR) were used to classify participants having'Symptoms of TD' if they met criteria for TD on both questionnaires, 'Tendency for TD' if met criteria on only one questionnaire, or 'Not TD'...

BackgroundBasal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy in the US. Body mass index (BMI) and height have been associated with a variety of cancer types, yet the evidence regarding BCC is limited. Therefore, we evaluated BMI and height in relation to early- onset BCC and explored the potential role of ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure as well as estrogen-related exposures in the BMI-BCC relationship.MethodsBCC cases (n=377) diagnosed under age 40 were identified through a central dermatopathology facility in Connecticut...

Demodex mites may induce inflammatory cutaneous reactions such as papulopustular rosacea and demodex folliculitis; both may lead to post inflammatory pigmentation. A 59-year-old man presented with an asymptomatic, hyperpigmented plaque on his face. Histological and clinical findings displayed Riehl-like facial pigmentation. Multiple demodex mites at the follicular infundibulum in the biopsy material were remarkable. There are limited publications about demodex-associated pigmentation. We report this case to point out that various hyperpigmentation disorders may occur simultaneously with demodex mites...

Oral focal mucinosis is a rare condition, clinically characterized by an asymptomatic swelling, without distinct, specific features, which occurs predominantly in adults of the female gender. Its clinical aspect leads to various differential diagnoses, and final diagnosis is only possible by means of histopathological exam, in which a well-delimited myxomatous area containing mucinous material is observed. In the present study, a review of the English-language literature about the lesion, was conducted, covering the period from 1974 to March 2015...
