Intravenous micafungin (Mycamine®; Funguard®), an echinocandin, is approved in the EU for the treatment of invasive candidiasis in children (including neonates) and adolescents (<16 years of age) and as prophylaxis against Candida infections in patients undergoing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or who are expected to have neutropenia for ≥10 days. This narrative review focuses on the use of micafungin in paediatric indications approved in the EU, which may vary from those approved elsewhere in the world...

Intravenous micafungin (Mycamine; Funguard) is an echinocandin indicated in Japan and the EU for the treatment of pediatric patients (including neonates) with invasive candidiasis and as prophylaxis against Candida infection in pediatric patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). In the EU, micafungin is also indicated in pediatric patients who are expected to have neutropenia for >/=10 days. In Japan, children may also receive micafungin for the treatment of, or as prophylaxis against, invasive Aspergillus infection...

A 67-year-old man with a past history of pulmonary tuberculosis had been referred to our department complaining of bloody sputum. The chest radiograph on admission showed a cavity in the left upper lung field. Chest CT showed a mass-like fungus ball in the cavity. Pulmonary aspergillosis was diagnosed from the sputum mycology, serum Aspergillus antigen and antibody. Even though 150 mg per day Funguard (micafungin sodium) was given intravenously for 4 weeks, the pulmonary aspergillosis did not improve. Dynamic MRI obtained 20 seconds after intravenous injection of contrast material revealed penetrating vessels in the wall of the cavity, and dilated and proliferative vessels surrounding the cavitary lesion...

Micafungin (MCFG) is a new lipopeptide antifungal agent of the echinocandin class. MCFG inhibits 1,3-beta-D-glucan synthesis in C. albicans and A. fumigatus in a non-competitive manner, and has antifungal activity against both Aspergillus and Candida species. In neutropenic mouse models of disseminated candidiasis and pulmonary aspergillosis, the efficacy of MCFG was superior to that of fluconazole and itraconazole, but comparable to that of amphotericin B. The efficacy and safety of MCFG were investigated in 70 patients with deep-seated mycosis caused by Candida and Aspergillus species...
