Several species of hard ticks, including those of the genera Ixodes, Haemaphysalis, Amblyomma, and Rhipicephalus, are of medical and veterinary importance and have been reported in association with Neotropical wild birds. Colombia, known for its great bird diversity, has 57 confirmed tick species. However, there are few studies on the association between wild birds and ticks in Colombia. The Orinoquia region, a migratory center in Colombia, provides a unique opportunity to study wild bird-tick associations and their implications for tick-borne disease dynamics...

UNLABELLED: We compared the performance of a new modified two-tier testing (MTTT) platform, the Diasorin Liaison chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA), to the Zeus enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) MTTT and to Zeus ELISA/Viramed immunoblot standard two-tier testing (STTT) algorithm. Of 537 samples included in this study, 91 (16.9%) were positive or equivocal by one or more screening tests. Among these 91 samples, only 57 samples were concordant positive by first-tier screening tests, and only 19 of 57 were concordant by the three second-tier methods...

In elderly patients high-degree atrioventricular (AV) block is often due to irreversible degeneration of the cardiac conduction system. Reversible causes must however be excluded prior to pacemaker implantation. In younger patients reversible causes are more likely, as well as more unusual etiologies. Lyme carditis is a rare, but reversible cause of AV block. It is a manifestation of Lyme borreliosis - an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. Lyme carditis should particularly be considered in young and middle-aged patients with a high-degree AV block...

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed was to investigate the frequency and clinical manifestations of European borreliosis on the skin, and to determine the significance of these findings for diagnosis and therapy. METHODS: A retrospective-prospective clinical study of outpatients treated and monitored in a private clinic of an infectologist was conducted over nine years from to 2013-2021...

UNLABELLED: Human babesiosis is a rapidly emerging and potentially fatal tick-borne disease caused by intraerythrocytic apicomplexan parasites of the Babesia genus. Among the various species of Babesia that infect humans, B. duncani has been found to cause severe and life-threatening infections. Detection of active B. duncani infection is critical for accurate diagnosis and effective management of the disease. While molecular assays for the detection of B. duncani infection in blood are available, a reliable strategy to detect biomarkers of active infection has not yet been developed...

Wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) are an important game species throughout the geographic range. Populations throughout multiple regions of the US have been declining, including in Kentucky, US, raising concerns among managers and resource users. To better understand the overall population health, we performed postmortem examinations and targeted pathogen, mineral, and toxicant testing on 36 adult male, apparently healthy, wild turkeys that were hunter harvested in western Kentucky during April 2018. We found that birds were in fair to good nutritional condition with no significant gross or microscopic lesions...

The genus Borrelia encompasses a diverse group of spirochetes transmitted primarily by ticks, with Borrelia burgdorferi causing Lyme disease, which is prevalent in North America and Europe. Borrelia's structural adaptations and ability to persist in diverse host tissues underscore its pathogenic potential. Beyond traditional infectious responses, Borrelia engages in complex interactions with the host immune system, contributing to autoimmune mechanisms such as molecular mimicry and persistent infections. This intricate interplay manifests in symptoms resembling various autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, local scleroderma, and systemic sclerosis...

Most host-microbiota interactions occur within the intestinal barrier, which is essential for separating the intestinal epithelium from toxins, microorganisms, and antigens in the gut lumen. Gut inflammation allows pathogenic bacteria to enter the blood stream, forming immune complexes which may deposit on organs. Despite increased circulating immune complexes (CICs) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and discussions among IBD experts regarding their potential pathogenic role in extra-intestinal manifestations, this phenomenon is overlooked because definitive evidence demonstrating CIC-induced extra-intestinal manifestations in IBD animal models is lacking...

A large part of all Lyme disease diagnoses concern the skin; in the Netherlands, 77-89% erythema migrans, 2-3% borrelia lymfocytoom and 1-3% acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans. These skin manifestations have a variable clinical expression, reason why they can be difficult to diagnose...

BACKGROUND: Hyalomma ticks are widely distributed in semi-arid zones in Northwest China. They have been reported to harbor a large number of zoonotic pathogens. METHODS: In this study, a total of 334 Hyalomma asiaticum ticks infesting domestic animals were collected from four locations in Xinjiang, Northwest China, and the bacterial agents in them were investigated. RESULTS: A putative novel Borrelia species was identified in ticks from all four locations, with an overall positive rate of 6...

Lyme disease is a tick-borne infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia (Borreliella) burgdorferi. Borrelia species have highly fragmented genomes composed of a linear chromosome and a constellation of linear and circular plasmids some of which are required throughout the enzootic cycle. Included in this plasmid repertoire by almost all Lyme disease spirochetes are the 32-kb circular plasmid cp32 prophages that are capable of lytic replication to produce infectious virions called ϕBB-1. While the B. burgdorferi genome contains evidence of horizontal transfer, the mechanisms of gene transfer between strains remain unclear...
