Dirofilariasis is an infectious disease caused by species of the Dirofilaria genus. It is manifested by the appearance of a subcutaneous swelling, especially in the eye region. We present the case of a 29-year-old patient who presented with facial asymmetry in the right genian region. Following clinical and paraclinical evaluations, the diagnosis of a parasitic cyst was established in the context of dirofilariasis with Dirofilaria repens ( D. repens ). Treatment consisted of surgical excision of the formation associated with prophylactic antibiotic medication...

OBJECTIVES: Anti-SSA autoantibodies can be differentiated according to their antigenic target proteins as anti-Ro60 (60 kDa) or anti-Ro52 (52 kDa). Anti-SSA(Ro60) antibodies are clearly associated with connective tissue diseases (CTD), but the clinical significance of anti-SSA(Ro52) antibodies remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to analyse the disease phenotype of patients with anti-Ro52 and/or anti-Ro60 antibodies. METHODS: A multicentre, cross-sectional study was carried out of positive anti-Ro52 and/or Ro60 antibodies patients followed at 10 Rheumatology centres from January 2018 until December 2021...

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving modality but has the potential to alter the pharmacokinetics (PK) of antimicrobials. Imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam is an antibiotic with utility in treating certain multi-drug resistant Gram-negative infections. Herein, we describe the population pharmacokinetics of imipenem and relebactam in critically ill patients supported on ECMO. METHODS: Patients with infection supported on ECMO received 4-6 doses of imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam per current prescribing information based on estimated creatinine clearance...

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted global public health. Infant mortality rate (IMR), a vital statistic and key indicator of a population's overall health, is essential for developing effective health prevention programs. Existing evidence primarily indicates a decrease in IMR during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a national-level analysis to calculate IMR and describe its course over the years (from 2016 until 2022), using a month-by-month analysis. METHODS: Data on the number of deaths under one year of age was collected from the Portuguese E-Death Certification System (SICO), and data on the number of monthly live births was obtained from Statistics Portugal...

BACKGROUND: The development of procedural skills is essential in health sciences education. Rubrics can be useful for learning and assessing these skills. To this end, a set of rubrics were developed in case of neurophysiotherapy maneuvers for undergraduates. Although students found the rubrics to be valid and useful in previous courses, the analysis of the practical exam results showed the need to change them in order to improve their validity and reliability, especially when used for summative purposes...

Nicolau syndrome is a rare, iatrogenic skin reaction after parental drug administration, characterized by severe pain at an injection site, followed by hemorrhage, ulceration, and often necrosis. We present a case of a patient on glatiramer acetate for many years (initially Copaxone then Glatopa) who developed Nicolau syndrome, the second reported case after generic glatiramer acetate. All reported cases of Nicolau syndrome after glatiramer acetate are reviewed. The case highlights the importance of prompt recognition of this skin reaction by neurologists and raises awareness of the risks of skin reactions even in low-risk injectable DMTs...

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that causes listeriosis, a group of human illnesses that appear more frequently in countries with better-developed food supply systems. This review discusses the efficacy of actual biocontrol methods combined with the main types of food involved in illnesses. Comments on bacteriophages, lactic acid bacteria, bacteriocins, essential oils, and endolysins and derivatives, as main biological antilisterial agents, are made bearing in mind that, using them, food processors can intervene to protect consumers...

Single exon duplications account for disease in a minority of Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients. Exon skipping in these patients has the potential to be highly therapeutic through restoration of full-length dystrophin expression. We conducted a 48-week open label study of casimersen and golodirsen in 3 subjects with an exon 45 or 53 duplication. Two subjects (aged 18 and 23 years) were non-ambulatory at baseline. Upper limb, pulmonary, and cardiac function appeared stable in the 2 subjects in whom they could be evaluated...

Cocrystallization assembles multicomponent crystals in defined ratios that are held together by intermolecular interactions. While cocrystals have seen extensive use in the pharmaceutical industry for solving issues with stability and solubility, extension to the field of energetic materials for improved properties has proven difficult. Predicting successful coformers remains a challenge for systems lacking well-understood synthons that promote reliable intermolecular assembly. Herein, an alternative method is investigated for altering energetic properties that operates in the absence of well-defined interactions by molecular doping...

Mammalian cells sense and react to the mechanics of their immediate microenvironment. Therefore, the characterization of the biomechanical properties of tissues with high spatial resolution provides valuable insights into a broad variety of developmental, homeostatic and pathological processes within living organisms. The biomechanical properties of the basement membrane (BM), an extracellular matrix (ECM) substructure measuring only ∼100-400 nm across, are, among other things, pivotal to tumor progression and metastasis formation...

Gyrokinetic simulations of the fishbone instability in DIII-D tokamak plasmas find that self-generated zonal flows can dominate the nonlinear saturation by preventing coherent structures from persisting or drifting in the energetic particle phase space when the mode frequency down-chirps. Results from the simulation with zonal flows agree quantitatively, for the first time, with experimental measurements of the fishbone saturation amplitude and energetic particle transport. Moreover, the fishbone-induced zonal flows are likely responsible for the formation of an internal transport barrier that was observed after fishbone bursts in this DIII-D experiment...
