The present research focused on water intake (WI) in young adults. Study 1 (N = 272) was a correlational study and showed affective attitude, perceived behavioural control, past behaviour and anticipated negative affective reactions (ANAR) to predict WI intentions. It also showed intentions, instrumental attitude, perceived behavioural control, and past behaviour to predict WI prospectively. In addition, ANAR moderates the relationship between intention and future water intake (WI). Study 2 (N = 197) was an experimental study and showed that daily text messages targeting ANAR plus a self-monitoring manipulation increased WI immediately after the intervention although this effect did not persist one month later...

Lately, the integration of two-dimensional materials into semiconductor devices has allowed the modification of their effective index by simply applying a modest voltage (between 0 and 3 volts). In this work, we present a device composed of two evanescently coupled silicon microring resonators where both rings have a graphene layer on top. This design is aimed to produce frequency combs with transmission characteristics controlled upon voltage application to the graphene layer. We numerically analyze the device response as a function of the incident wavelength and applied voltage...

Semantic control allows us to shape our conceptual retrieval to suit the circumstances in a flexible way. Tasks requiring semantic control activate a large-scale network including left inferior prefrontal gyrus (IFG) and posterior middle temporal gyrus (pMTG) - this network responds when retrieval is focussed on weak as opposed to dominant associations. However, little is known about the biological basis of individual differences in this cognitive capacity: regions that are commonly activated in task-based fMRI may not relate to variation in controlled retrieval...

Huge amount of flue gas desulphurization (FGD) gypsum not only occupies the farmland but also causes severe pollution to the surrounding environment. The most effective way to achieve a high-value utilization of FGD gypsum is to prepare short columnar α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) since short columnar crystals show better mechanical strength than needle-like ones. Here, malic acid, a prolific, inexpensive and environment-friendly modifier was explored for the first time to effectively tune the crystal morphology of α-HH prepared from FGD gypsum in glycerol-water-NaCl solutions...

Immune stimulation might be involved in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). This stimulation induces indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), an enzyme that reduces the tryptophan bioavailability to synthesize serotonin. IDO products, kynurenine metabolites, exert neurotoxic/neuroprotective actions through glutamate receptors. Thus, we study elements of these pathways linked to kynurenine metabolite activity examining whether antidepressants (ADs) can modulate them. Male Wistar rats were exposed to chronic mild stress (CMS), and some of them were treated with ADs...

Stroke has multiple etiologies, but the underlying genes and pathways are largely unknown. We conducted a multiancestry genome-wide-association meta-analysis in 521,612 individuals (67,162 cases and 454,450 controls) and discovered 22 new stroke risk loci, bringing the total to 32. We further found shared genetic variation with related vascular traits, including blood pressure, cardiac traits, and venous thromboembolism, at individual loci (n = 18), and using genetic risk scores and linkage-disequilibrium-score regression...

INTRODUCTION: Progressive supranuclear palsy with predominant parkinsonism (PSP-P) accounts for 14-35% of all PSP cases. A few cross-sectional MRI studies in PSP-P showed a remarkable white matter (WM) damage. Progression of brain structural damage in these patients remains unknown. METHODS: Longitudinal clinical, cognitive and diffusion tensor (DT) MRI data were obtained over a mean 1.6 year follow up in 10 PSP-P patients. At study entry, patients were compared with 36 healthy controls...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although current guidelines advocate pretreatment with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) in all eligible patients with acute ischemic stroke with large-vessel occlusion before mechanical thrombectomy, there are observational data questioning the efficacy of this approach. One of the main arguments in favor of IVT pretreatment is the potential for tissue-type plasminogen activator-induced successful reperfusion (SR) before the onset of endovascular procedure. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials and observational cohorts providing rates of SR with IVT in patients with large-vessel occlusion before the initiation of mechanical thrombectomy...

Continuing tissue destruction in osteoarthrosis is maintained by molecular pathways related to an unbalanced chondrocyte metabolism, the loss of reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis, increase catabolism in a degraded matrix and the limited response to growth factors due to cell aging. Rare deleterious gene variants driving relevant molecular pathways may play a key role in the pathogenesis and genetic control of common diseases and may also influence the common gene variants observed in GWAS. We use molecular profiling technologies based on massive sequencing of genes to interrogate clinical samples for a variety of molecules involved in the pathogenesis pathways of OA and also to derive new insights for drug targeting discovery at an early stage of the disease...

The first week of September 2013, the National Epidemiological Surveillance System identified two cases of cholera in Mexico City. The cultures of both samples were confirmed as Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1, serotype Ogawa, biotype El Tor. Initial analyses by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and by polymerase chain reaction-amplification of the virulence genes, suggested that both strains were similar, but different from those previously reported in Mexico. The following week, four more cases were identified in a community in the state of Hidalgo, located 121 km northeast of Mexico City...

Within the framework of neurodegenerative disorder therapies, the fabrication of 3D eumelanin architectures represents a novel strategy to realize tissue-engineering scaffolds for neuronal cell growth and control by providing both mechanical support and biological signals. Here, an appropriate procedure combining electrospinning, spin coating and solid-state polymerization process is established to realize the scaffolds. For biological analysis, a human derived cell line SH-SY5Y from neuroblastoma is used. Cell maturation on eumelanin microfibers, random and aligned, is evaluated by using confocal analysis and specific markers of differentiating neurons (βIII tubulin and GAP-43 expression)...
