Background: Airway hemangiomas are congenital neoplasms of low incidence. Its clinical presentation consists of obstruction of the upper airway with progressive dyspnea and stridor and the life of the patient at risk. Infantile hemangiomas have an incidence at birth of 2%, increasing to 9% at 12 months of life. Almost 60% of childhood hemangiomas affect the head and neck region. However, localization in the upper airway is not as frequent and it is only reported in 1.8% of patients with cutaneous hemangiomas...

OBJECTIVES: To identify the psychopathological, cognitive, functional, physical health and inflammatory markers that differentiate between early-stage schizophrenia (ESSCH) and late-stage schizophrenia (LSSCH). METHODS: Cross-sectional, naturalistic study of 104 patients with SCH. The sample was divided in two groups: 35 ESSCH (≤7 years' duration of illness) and 69 LSSCH (>10 years' duration of illness). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: chi-square test and Student's t-test and ANCOVA (or Quade test) controlling for age, sex, BMI and number of cigarettes/day...

Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) is a common and complex manifestation of advanced stage cancer. Treatment options have trended towards less invasive approaches such as intrapleural catheter drainage, however this technique is not without morbidity and not suitable for every patient. A troublesome scenario arises when an MPE is secondarily infected in the setting of an indwelling catheter, given both the high frequency of recurrence of such fluid and the presence of a foreign body. Further, quality literature surrounding this specific management issue is sparse and thus practice is heterogeneous...

Introduction. One third of the increase in tuberculosis cases is attributed to the spread of HIV. Objective. To describe the Tb/HIV coinfection in the department of Meta from 2010 to 2015. Materials and methods. We conducted an observational, descriptive and retrospective study. After selecting 219 cases for analysis, two new databases were constructed and analyzed in three phases: Identification of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, indicators by municipality (prevalence and therapeutic success) and stratification in epidemiological scenarios according to the prevalence (burden) of the illness...

We report a case of intrauterine infection by Toxoplasma gondii, Chikungunya and Zika viruses in a Colombian woman from the southern part of the country. The patient attended prenatal care in the second trimester of her pregnancy and she informed that in the first trimester she had presented with clinical symptoms compatible with Zika virus infection. Amniotic fluid PCR assays showed infection by T. gondii, chikungunya and Zika viruses. Diagnostic imaging showed fetal malformation of the central nervous system...

BACKGROUND: Studies show that Toll-like receptors (TLRs), members of the innate immune system, might participate in the pathogenesis of the major depressive disorder (MDD). However, evidence of this participation in the brain of patients with MDD has been elusive. METHODS: This work explores whether the protein expression by immunodetection assays (Western blot) of elements of TLR-4 pathways controlling inflammation and the oxidative/nitrosative stress are altered in postmortem dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of subjects with MDD...

Objective: to compare two models of experimental glaucoma by induction of ocular hypertension in rabbits. Materials and methods: Sixteen New Zealand female rabbits, 2-3 kg were used. Model A (n=6): cauterization of episcleral and perilimbar veins of the right eye (RE) with surgical electrocautery. Model B (n=10): Injection of ?-chymotrypsin in posterior chamber of RE. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured before and after the induction of ocular hypertension (OHT), once a week at the same time of day for 40 days, with a manual tonometer...

The present research focused on water intake (WI) in young adults. Study 1 (N = 272) was a correlational study and showed affective attitude, perceived behavioural control, past behaviour and anticipated negative affective reactions (ANAR) to predict WI intentions. It also showed intentions, instrumental attitude, perceived behavioural control, and past behaviour to predict WI prospectively. In addition, ANAR moderates the relationship between intention and future water intake (WI). Study 2 (N = 197) was an experimental study and showed that daily text messages targeting ANAR plus a self-monitoring manipulation increased WI immediately after the intervention although this effect did not persist one month later...

Lately, the integration of two-dimensional materials into semiconductor devices has allowed the modification of their effective index by simply applying a modest voltage (between 0 and 3 volts). In this work, we present a device composed of two evanescently coupled silicon microring resonators where both rings have a graphene layer on top. This design is aimed to produce frequency combs with transmission characteristics controlled upon voltage application to the graphene layer. We numerically analyze the device response as a function of the incident wavelength and applied voltage...

Semantic control allows us to shape our conceptual retrieval to suit the circumstances in a flexible way. Tasks requiring semantic control activate a large-scale network including left inferior prefrontal gyrus (IFG) and posterior middle temporal gyrus (pMTG) - this network responds when retrieval is focussed on weak as opposed to dominant associations. However, little is known about the biological basis of individual differences in this cognitive capacity: regions that are commonly activated in task-based fMRI may not relate to variation in controlled retrieval...

This study identified structural and functional brain connectivity alterations in two independent samples of patients along the posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) disease course. Twenty-one PCA patients and 44 controls were recruited from two expert centres. Microstructural damage of white matter (WM) tracts was assessed using probabilistic tractography; resting state (RS) functional connectivity of brain networks was explored using a model free approach; grey matter (GM) atrophy was investigated using voxel-based morphometry...

Huge amount of flue gas desulphurization (FGD) gypsum not only occupies the farmland but also causes severe pollution to the surrounding environment. The most effective way to achieve a high-value utilization of FGD gypsum is to prepare short columnar α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) since short columnar crystals show better mechanical strength than needle-like ones. Here, malic acid, a prolific, inexpensive and environment-friendly modifier was explored for the first time to effectively tune the crystal morphology of α-HH prepared from FGD gypsum in glycerol-water-NaCl solutions...

Immune stimulation might be involved in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). This stimulation induces indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), an enzyme that reduces the tryptophan bioavailability to synthesize serotonin. IDO products, kynurenine metabolites, exert neurotoxic/neuroprotective actions through glutamate receptors. Thus, we study elements of these pathways linked to kynurenine metabolite activity examining whether antidepressants (ADs) can modulate them. Male Wistar rats were exposed to chronic mild stress (CMS), and some of them were treated with ADs...

Stroke has multiple etiologies, but the underlying genes and pathways are largely unknown. We conducted a multiancestry genome-wide-association meta-analysis in 521,612 individuals (67,162 cases and 454,450 controls) and discovered 22 new stroke risk loci, bringing the total to 32. We further found shared genetic variation with related vascular traits, including blood pressure, cardiac traits, and venous thromboembolism, at individual loci (n = 18), and using genetic risk scores and linkage-disequilibrium-score regression...

Objective: We investigated the proportion of Vβ T cell receptor (TCR) gene expression in peripheral CD3+ lymphocytes in familial and non-familial systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. The Vβ TCR usage in SLE patients (n = 27) was compared with that in healthy members of these multiplex families (n = 47), in 37 sporadic SLE patients who had no relatives with SLE, and in 15 healthy unrelated controls...
