Innate immunity is an essential line of defense against pathogen invasion which is gained at birth, and the mechanism involved is mainly to identify pathogen-associated molecular patterns through pattern recognition receptors. STING (stimulator of interferon genes) is a signal junction molecule that hosts the perception of viral nucleic acids and produces type I interferon response, which plays a crucial role in innate immunity. However, relatively few studies have investigated the molecular characterization, tissue distribution, and potential function of STING in chickens...

The seagrass Zostera japonica Asch. & Graebn. is among the few seagrass species that thrive both in temperate and tropical intertidal zones. The degradation of Z. japonica in its native range and continued expansion in some localities have raised concerns with regard to its conservation and management. Population genetic studies of Z. japonica across its biogeographic range and within meadows are scarce. Previously developed microsatellites via traditional methods are not sufficient in quantity and perform inconsistently between the temperate and tropical populations...

A WS2 /WSe2 heterostructure is constructed by stacking a WS2 monolayer on the top of WSe2 monolayer fabricated with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Ultrafast transient spectroscopy is used to demonstrate the ultrafast charge transfer and interlayer exciton dynamics in the heterostructure. When the WS2 /WSe2 heterostructure was photoexcitated at 617 nm (2.01 eV) to excite the A-exciton transition of WS2 , an ultrafast photobleaching was observed around the WSe2 A-exciton transition at 749 nm. The bleaching signal lasts several nanoseconds, which is much longer than the A-exciton lifetime in both the WS2 and WSe2 monolayer film...

The main purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing a single bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) of using quadrupled hamstring (4HT) autografts and two-strand tibialis anterior (2TA) allografts, and to find out the rate of graft failure and possible causes. We hypothesized that there would be no difference in the clinical outcome, and graft failure would be associated with the use of small sized allograft in young active males with high demand of sports activities...

The century-old embryonal/gametogenesis hypothesis of tumors could link diverse tumors' malignant features together likely representing the real "stemness" of tumors. However, the genetic evidence to validate abnormal gametogenesis in tumors remains lacking. Here we show that p53 deficiency elicits abnormal gametogenesis from primordial germ cell-like stage to late oocyte-like stage and subsequent parthenogenetic activation. The similar upregulation of abnormal gametogenesis by p53 deficiency is observed both in p53-/- mouse model and cultured cancer cells...

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most lethal types of cancer. The 5-year survival rate for PDAC remains low because it is always diagnosed at an advanced stage and it is resistant to therapy. A biomarker, which could detect asymptomatic premalignant or early malignant tumors and predict the response to treatment, will benefit patients with PDAC. However, traditional biopsy has its limitations. There is an urgent need for a tumor biomarker that could easily and repeatedly sample and monitor, in real time, the progress of tumor development...

The genome of kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) was sequenced previously, the first in the Actinidiaceae family. It was shown to have been affected by polyploidization events, the nature of which has been elusive. Here, we performed a reanalysis of the genome and found clear evidence of 2 tetraploidization events, with one occurring ∼50-57 million years ago (Mya) and the other ∼18-20 Mya. Two subgenomes produced by each event have been under balanced fractionation. Moreover, genes were revealed to express in a balanced way between duplicated copies of chromosomes...

BACKGROUND: TEM8 is a cell membrane protein predominantly expressed in tumor endothelium, which serves as a receptor for the protective antigen (PA) of anthrax toxin. However, the physiological ligands for TEM8 remain unknown. RESULTS: Here we identified uPA as an interacting partner of TEM8. Binding of uPA stimulated the phosphorylation of TEM8 and augmented phosphorylation of EGFR and ERK1/2. Finally, TEM8-Fc, a recombinant fusion protein comprising the extracellular domain of human TEM8 linked to the Fc portion of human IgG1, efficiently abrogated the interaction between uPA and TEM8, blocked uPA-induced migration of HepG2 cells in vitro and inhibited the growth and metastasis of human MCF-7 xenografts in vivo...

Exploring the effects of orographic events and climatic shifts on geographic distribution of organism in the Hengduan Mountains Region (HMR) and its eastern adjacent area is crucial to the understanding of the environmental changes to organismal evolution. To gain further insight into these processes, we reconstruct evolutionary history of ten species in Allium section Sikkimensia, distributed across regions abovementioned. Using chloroplast and nuclear sequence variation of 79 populations of these ten Allium species with known morphological preferences, we elucidate the phylogenetic relationship, divergence time, ancestral area and genetic structures...
