Background: Limited data are available to guide management of patients with stage I-III gastric cancer not undergoing potentially curative surgical resection. We compared survival outcomes associated with chemotherapy alone versus chemoradiation (CRT) in the treatment of nonmetastatic gastric cancer. Methods: Patients with gastric adenocarcinoma from 2004 to 2015 were identified using the National Cancer Database. Patients were excluded if they had surgery, metastatic disease, or T0, Tis, or T1a disease. Logistic regression was used to evaluate predictors of CRT use...

A novel oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst (3D S235-P steel) based on steel S235 substrate has been successfully prepared via a facile one-step surface modification. The standard Carbon Manganese steel was phosphorizated superficially leading to the formation of a unique 3D interconnected nanoporous surface with high specific area which facilitates the electrocatalytically initiated oxygen evolution reaction. The prepared 3D S235-P steel exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic OER activities in alkaline regime confirmed by a low overpotential (η=326 mV at j=10 mA cm-2) and a small Tafel slope of 68...

OBJECTIVE: Hematologic inflammatory markers are simple, inexpensive prognostic markers for various conditions. The prognostic significance of representative markers neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and red cell distribution width (RDW) in patients exist in a variety of tumors. The objective of this study was to evaluate prognostic value of these markers in glioma. METHODS: A retrospective chart review study was conducted for 219 glioma patients between January 2012 and January 2017...

The formation of the spine is a critical stage of mammalian development. The increase of the number of individual axons affects its performance, especially in meat production. To understand the role of miRNAs in sheep vertebrae development, the purpose of this article is to screen candidate microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with sheep spine development. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a rich family of small regulatory RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing techniques to analyze the microRNAs (miRNAs) expression profiles of L6 (6 lumbar vertebrae) and L7 (7 lumbar vertebrae) in sheep...

Uveitis is characterized as a common cause of blindness worldwide. Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a ligand-activated nuclear receptor, has been implicated to play a role in human uveitis, although the exact mechanisms remain poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to enhance our knowledge concerning the role of AhR during intraocular inflammation. We immunized wild-type and AhR-knockout C57BL/6J mice with IRBP651-670 to induce experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU). Disease severity was evaluated with both clinical and histopathological grading...

Semiconductor diodes are basic building blocks of modern computation, communications and sensing1 . As such, incorporating them into textile-grade fibres can increase fabric capabilities and functions2 ,  to encompass, for example,  fabric-based communications or physiological monitoring. However, processing challenges have so far precluded the realization of semiconducting diodes of high quality in thermally drawn fibres. Here we demonstrate a scalable thermal drawing process of electrically connected diode fibres...

BACKGROUND: Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell (ASCs) exerts immunomodulatory roles in asthma. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The present study aimed to explore the effects and mechanisms of ASCs on chronic asthma using an ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized asthmatic mouse model. METHODS: Murine ASCs (mASCs) were isolated from male Balb/c mice and identified by the expression of surface markers using flow cytometry. The OVA-sensitized asthmatic mouse model was established and then animals were treated with the mASCs through intratracheal delivery...

OBJECTIVE: Gastric polyps (GPs) are masses of cells that form on the lining inside stomach. The diagnosis and treatment of GPs are vital, since some cases may cause malignant. Endoscopic techniques have led to earlier detection of GPs, the incidence of GPs are projected to continue rising. The treatment of GPs and investigation are specific to the possible presentation, pathology, and malignant. This paper is to investigate risk factors related to GPs patients in China. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total of 2048 patients who underwent gastrointestinal endoscopy from January 2014 to December 2014 were studied...

Synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) are a group of chemicals widely used in various daily necessities and industrial supplies. Little is known about the occurrence and bioaccumulation potential of SPAs in marine biota. In this study, five commonly used SPAs and their four metabolites were detected in mollusk samples (n = 274) collected from the Chinese Bohai Sea during 2006-2016 and the spatiotemporal distribution and bioaccumulation of SPAs in mollusks were examined. The concentrations of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxytoluene (BHT) ranged from 383 to 501000 ng/g (geometric mean: 3450 ng/g), accounting for 79...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether ginsenoside-Rb1 (Gs-Rb1) improves the CoCl-induced autophagy of cardiomyocytes via upregulation of adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway. METHODS: Ventricles from 1- to 3-day-old Wistar rats were sequentially digested, separated and incubated in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum for 3 days followed by synchronization. Neonatal rat cardiomyocytes were randomly divided into 7 groups: control group (normal level oxygen), hypoxia group (500 μmol/L CoCl2 ), Gs-Rb1 group (200 μmol/L Gs-Rb1 + 500 μmol/L CoCl2 ), Ara A group (500 μmol/L Ara A + 500 μmol/L CoCl2 ), Ara A+ Gs-Rb1 group (500 μmol/L Ara A + 200 μmol/L Gs-Rb1 + 500 μmol/L CoCl2 ), AICAR group [1 mmol/L 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide (AICAR) + 500 μmol/L CoCl2 ], and AICAR+Gs-Rb1 group (1 mmol/L AICAR + 200 μmol/L Gs-Rb1 + 500 μmol/L CoCl2 )...

Accurate perception of time-variant pitch is important for speech recognition, particularly for tonal languages with different lexical tones such as Mandarin, in which different tones convey different semantic information. Previous studies reported that the auditory nerve and cochlear nucleus can encode different pitches through phase-locked neural activities. However, little is known about how the inferior colliculus (IC) encodes the time-variant periodicity pitch of natural speech. In this study, the Mandarin syllable /ba/ pronounced with four lexical tones (flat, rising, falling then rising and falling) were used as stimuli...

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive hysterectomy is now routinely used for women with uterine cancer. Most studies of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for endometrial cancer have focused on low-risk, endometrioid tumors with few reports of the safety of the procedure for women with higher risk histologic subtypes. We report the results of a search for the rare, purely leptonic decay B^{-}→μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ} performed with a 711  fb^{-1} data sample that contains 772×10^{6}  BB[over ¯] pairs, collected near the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. The signal events are selected based on the presence of a high momentum muon and the topology of the rest of the event showing properties of a generic B-meson decay, as well as the missing energy and momentum being consistent with the hypothesis of a neutrino from the signal decay...
