Objective  Individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLP) are at a high risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Hypothetically, the severity of OSA might be associated with the morphology of the upper airway (UAW) and the characteristics of the airflow. Thus, the present study aimed to assess and compare, in adults with CLP and skeletal class-III discrepancy, with or without OSA, simulations of airflow resistance and pressure according to the geometrical characteristics of the UAW and cephalometric parameters...

BACKGROUND: Bilateral cleft lip is a congenital defect often accompanied by secondary lip and nose deformity. The current classification system for secondary cleft lip deformity has limitations in guiding surgical planning. In this article, we report a method for secondary bilateral cleft lip classification that can guide surgery on the basis of the pathological anatomy of the columellar and upper lip. METHODS: Photographs of patients were retrospectively classified into four types on the basis of the ratio of columellar height to alar base width (CH/AW) and upper lip protrusion (UP) to lower lip, as follows: type I - with CH/AW ≥ 0...

BACKGROUND: The traditional nasolabial V-Y advancement flap is widely used for midface reconstruction, particularly for the lower third of the nose and upper lip, as its color and texture are similar to these areas. However, it provides insufficient tissue to cover large defects and cannot restore the nasal convexity, nasal ala, and adjacent tissues. The purpose of this study is to investigate the modified nasolabial V-Y advancement flap with extension limbs the along alar crease for the reconstruction of complex midface defects...

INTRODUCTION: The Abbe flap is a standard intervention to treat upper lip deformities in patients with bilateral cleft lip. This two-stage procedure requires a 2 to 3-week period in which the superior and inferior lips remain connected. This study evaluates the safety of Abbe flap division and inset prior to 14 days' time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single institution, 8-year review of all patients with a bilateral cleft lip who underwent Abbe flap reconstruction was performed...

Methods: The retrospective observational study method was used. From August 2019 to March 2023, 11 patients with severe perioral scar hyperplasia and contracture after severe facial burns who met the inclusion criteria were admitted to General Hospital of TISCO (the Sixth Hospital of Shanxi Medical University). AIM: The purpose of this case report is to provide a simple, efficient, and novel technique for fabricating a nasal stent utilizing a multisegmental cast to rehabilitate the anatomic and functional dynamicity of the upper airway following primary cleft lip and primary rhinoplasty surgery. BACKGROUND: Nasal deformity is often associated with congenital unilateral or bilateral cleft lip and palate. Despite primary nasal reconstruction at the time of definitive lip repair, the long-term postoperative outcome of the nasal correction frequently falls short of the surgeon's or patient's expectations...

BACKGROUND: Microform cleft lip is the mildest type of cleft lip without obvious defects of the upper lip. The nose deformities of microform cleft lip include flattened nostril rim, alar base asymmetry, and septal deviation. A hidden skin incision with nasal base muscle reconstruction was introduced in nose deformities of microform cleft lip. METHOD: To investigate the operative effect, we reviewed 21 patients with microform cleft lip treated with a hidden skin incision with nasal base muscle reconstruction from May 2020 to October 2022...

Suckermouth armoured catfish (Loricariidae) are a highly speciose and diverse freshwater fish family, which bear upper and lower lips forming an oral disc. Its hierarchical organisation allows the attachment to various natural surfaces. The discs can possess papillae of different shapes, which are supplemented, in many taxa, by small horny projections, i.e. unculi. Although these attachment structures and their working mechanisms, which include adhesion and interlocking, are rather well investigated in some selected species, the loricariid oral disc is unfortunately understudied in the majority of species, especially with regard to comparative aspects of the diverse oral structures and their relationship to the ecology of different species...

PURPOSE: Acquired defects of the central face pose significant challenges in achieving acceptable cosmetic and functional outcomes. The site, size, and depth of tissue loss often render local tissues inadequate for the repair of major nasal defects. In this article, we aim to demonstrate the efficacy of radial forearm-free flaps as an ideal choice for various central facial unit reconstructions. METHODS: This study encompassed patients treated between 2020 and 2022 who underwent facial reconstruction using radial forearm flaps...

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve paralysis (FNP) often causes decreased quality of life and may lead to significant facial dysfunction. Oral competence is frequently raised as a concern by patients as it impacts nutrition, hydration, social participation, and mental health. This can result in social isolation and reduced capacity to return to vocational roles. Despite its prevalence, it is incompletely understood and rarely described. This study prospectively evaluated the impact that facial nerve static and dynamic reanimation has on oral competence, with a specific focus on speech intelligibility and the oral phase of the swallow...

INTRODUCTION: Although pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common neoplasm of both minor and major salivary glands, its presence in the buccal surface of upper lip is rare. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 70-year-old male presented with a chief complaint of recent rapid growth of a mass in the buccal aspect of the upper lip. A well-circumscribed mass measuring 3 × 2 cm with intact overlying mucosa without regional lymphadenopathy was evident. Core needle biopsy report was suggestive of PA...

BACKGROUND: Although the "white skin roll" of the lip is often considered a line, it is better defined as the subunit between the vermilion border and the upper lip horizontal groove. In many unilateral cleft lip repair techniques, this structure is approximated between both sides of the cleft without restoration. This study aimed to analyze the white skin roll height in patients with unilateral cleft lip. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 134 consecutive infants with unilateral cleft lip aged 3-6 months who underwent lip repair in a single institution between January 2019 and July 2021...

Postoperative fixation is required for skin grafts on mobile sites. External wire-frame fixation technique has demonstrated a beneficial role for grafts in specific areas such as lips, eyelids, and fingers. Although this technique is sufficient in most cases, patients with psychosis fail to maintain the lip in resting position, which led us to consider using a more rigid fixation method, known as "Geometric wire-frame fixation." Surgical technique included fixing a perimeter frame around skin graft similar to the conventional external wire-frame fixation...

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children, accounting for 4.5% of all cases of cancer in childhood. Although the head and neck are the most common sites of rhabdomyosarcoma, oral lesions are relatively rare and account for only 10% to 12% of head and neck rhabdomyosarcoma cases. This is a case report of a girl aged 2 years and 1 month who initially presented with an upper lip mass that invaded the oral mucosa, oral skin, and nostril skin, causing narrowing of the airway. Through our case, we show that rapidly growing small round cell malignancies, especially rhabdomyosarcoma, can be effectively diagnosed and treated at the same time using primary resection with intraoperative frozen section biopsy and that the time spent waiting for the results of preoperative biopsy can be saved in this way, particularly when the patient's symptoms are intensifying rapidly and require immediate operation...
