PURPOSE: To study the efficacy and toxic effects of bepotastine besilate 1.5% preservative-free (BB-PF) and olopatadine 0.2% BAK-preserved (OL-BAK) drops on the ocular surface of patients with allergic conjunctivitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ninety-seven patients with allergic conjunctivitis diagnosis participated in a prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled, parallel-group clinical trial. Patients received either BB-PF (n=48) or OL-BAK (n=49), both administered once daily in the morning...

Studies to date have mostly investigated environmental factors responsible for deterioration of historical monuments. Black crusts formed on historical monuments are considered as factor for deterioration of structures or as an indicator of environmental status of the surrounding area. Black crust formed on historical monuments has never been investigated as a health hazard. Herein, for the first time, we performed in vitro and in vivo toxicology studies of black crust formed on three culturally-rich historical monuments (Rang Ghar, Kareng Ghar, and Talatal Ghar) of the Indian subcontinent to test their toxicological effect...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Three biologics targeting type 2 inflammation have been approved for the treatment of severe and uncontrolled chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Nevertheless, around 40-60% of patients do not respond well to these biological treatments. Selecting appropriate patients is crucial to improve treatment outcome of biologics. This review summarizes the literature data on type 2 biomarkers, with a specific focus on the indication to biologics for severe CRSwNP...

Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL) is a non-Hodgkin lymphoma associated with the Epstein-Barr virus that primarily affects individuals in East Asia and indigenous populations in Central and South America. Morphologically, ENKTL typically consists of medium-sized cells or a combination of small and large cells. This report presents 10 cases characterized by predominantly anaplastic cells with diffuse expression of CD30, resembling anaplastic lymphoma kinase-negative anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALK-negative ALCL) and demonstrating highly aggressive behavior...

Tests such as nasal smear for eosinophilia, Skin prick test, Serum absolute eosinophil count and Immunoglobulin IgE helps us in diagnosis of allergic rhinitis. Objective : To evaluate the efficacy of the nasal smear for eosinophilia and blood absolute eosinophil count tests to diagnose allergic rhinitis in patients with varied severity of symptoms...

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) pose a significant threat to both human and animal health. Developing IAV vaccine strategies able to elicit broad heterologous protection against antigenically diverse IAV strains is pivotal in effectively controlling the disease. The goal of this study was to examine the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of diverse H1N1 influenza vaccine strategies including monovalent, bivalent, and heterologous prime-boost vaccination regimens, against a mismatched H1N2 swine influenza virus...

Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL), nasal type, is often seen in the head and neck region, but there have been rare instances of this disease with initial presentation as a lesion in the oral mucosa. The patient, a woman in her seventh decade of life, presented with an ulcer in the maxillary gingiva, and scraping cytology and biopsy were performed. Cytological specimens showed solitary or small aggregating cells with marked atypia in a necrotic background. Tumor cells were detected that had various nuclear shapes and azure granules in the cytoplasm...

Introduction  Chronic rhinitis (CR) represents a widespread inflammation with a high incidence in the general population. Although it is generally considered a benign condition, CR has a relevant impact on quality of life and requires a specific treatment approach. Objective  The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of glycyrrhizin and mannitol intranasal treatment on chronic rhinitis using cytological analysis and subjective evaluation of symptoms. Methods  A total of 55 patients suffering from chronic rhinitis were enrolled in the present study, 34 with allergic rhinitis (AR) and 21 with nonallergic rhinitis (NAR)...

Acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP) is a rare cause of respiratory failure. It is primarily a disease of smokers, either a new smoker or an existing one with a recent increase in cigarette consumption. Other risk factors include toxic gas exposure, inhalational illicit drugs, and smoking marijuana. AEP has also been reported in patients with e-cigarette or vaping associated lung injury (EVALI). We present the case of a 20-year-old male who presented to the hospital with acute respiratory failure. The patient has been vaping heavily for the past three months and started smoking three days before presenting to the emergency department...

The olfactory mucosa, lining a portion of the nasal cavity, houses the primary olfactory sensory neurons responsible for odor transduction, along with supporting cell populations. Tremendous advances have come from studying the peripheral olfactory system in animal models, especially the mouse. However, acquired human olfactory disorders lack effective therapies, and many of these conditions involve pathology in the olfactory mucosa. Thus, the ability to obtain human olfactory biopsy samples from subjects with olfactory dysfunction, or controls, may be of value...

Nasal cytology is a non-invasive, low-cost exam that can help physicians in the diagnosis of allergic and nonallergic rhinitis, discriminating between different nasal disorders. The aim of this review is to summarize and analyze the current knowledge about nasal cytological examination in head and neck cancer, with a specific focus on the effects of different treatments. Indeed, nasal cytology is important to choose the best treatment for nasal complaints in each patient. An 11-year-old spayed female French bulldog was referred on suspicion of nasal tumor. Anaplastic oligodendroglioma in the olfactory bulb that was suspected to have invaded the nasal cavity was diagnosed from imaging and histopathology. Metastasis to cervical lymph nodes was suspected, with no other metastases identified. The brain-to-nasal lesion and lymph nodes were treated with hypo-fractionated radiation therapy. Nasal congestion soon resolved. About 3 months later, follow-up computed tomography revealed multiple hepatic and splenic masses, which were cytologically suspected as metastatic oligodendroglioma...

CT scans showed a well-defined subcutaneous swelling in the naso-orbito-ethmoid (NOE) region. KD presents as lymphoglandular swelling; however, NOE region is an uncommon site of occurrence. A thyroid-shaped tumour was excised by H-shaped incision approach to the NOE region...
