The purpose of this experimental research study was to explore how modality and learning style preferences impact non-prescribing, first-year Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) students' recall of vocabulary. Independent t-test results indicated a statistically significant mean difference in short-term recall of pharmacological and psychiatric terms, with learners receiving visual text instruction recalling significantly more vocabulary than learners receiving audio text instruction. A correlation was not found between learning preferences and vocabulary recall...

OBJECTIVES: As the left vagus nerve (LVN) mediates a baroreflex blood pressure (BP) decrease, LVN stimulation (LVNS) could be a therapy for hypertension. Moreover, LVNS could elegantly be adjusted to the patient's actual BP and physical activity by using the neural information about BP and respiration extractable from LVN. However, unselective LVNS will trigger undesirable side-effects and therefore we here investigated the feasibility of using an intraneural electrode for extracting BP and respiration markers from the LVN and for selective LVNS...

The degradation of solutions of the antibiotic levofloxacin (LVN) in sulfate medium at pH 3.0 has been investigated at pre-pilot scale by solar photoelectro-Fenton (SPEF) process. The flow plant included an FM01-LC filter-press cell equipped with a Ti|Pt anode and a three-dimensional-like air-diffusion cathode, connected to a compound parabolic collector as photoreactor and a continuous stirred tank under recirculation batch mode. The effect of volumetric flow rate on H2 O2 electrogeneration from O2 reduction was assessed...

Maintaining balance after an external perturbation requires modification of ongoing motor plans and the selection of contextually appropriate muscle activation patterns that respect body and limb position. We have used the vestibular system to generate sensory-evoked transitions in motor programming. In the face of a rapid balance perturbation, the lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN) generates exclusive extensor muscle activation and selective early extension of the hindlimb, followed by the co-activation of extensor and flexor muscle groups...

Lavender essential oil (Lvn) has anti-inflammatory effects in an ovalbumin-sensitized murine model of asthma, and inhibits inflammatory cell infiltration into the lungs. The anti-inflammatory effects of Lvn on cell adhesion molecules are not clear. Here we evaluated the effects of Lvn and its main constituents, linalyl acetate (LA) and linalool (LO), on the expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)-induced cell adhesion molecules in murine brain endothelial bEnd.3 cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs)...

Left ventricular non-compaction (cardiomyopathy) (LVN(C)) is a rare hereditary cardiac condition, resulting from abnormal embryonic myocardial development. While it mostly occurs as an isolated condition, association with other cardiovascular manifestations such as Ebstein anomaly (EA) has been reported. This congenital heart defect is characterized by downward displacement of the tricuspid valve and leads to diminished ventricular size and function. In an autosomal dominant LVN(C) family consisting of five affected individuals, of which two also presented with EA and three with mitral valve insufficiency, we pursued the genetic disease cause using whole exome sequencing (WES)...

A major cause of morbidity in Parkinson's disease (PD) is postural instability. The neuropathology underlying postural instability is unknown. Postural control is mediated by Deiters' neurons of the lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN), which are the brainstem origin of descending vestibulospinal reflexes. Deiters' neurons express the cytostructural protein, non-phosphorylated neurofilament protein (NPNFP). In PD, reduced expression of NPNFP in substantia nigra (SN) neurons is believed to contribute to dysfunction...

OBJECTIVE: Left vagus nerve (LVN) stimulation (LVNS) has been tested for lowering the blood pressure (BP) in patients with resistant hypertension (RH). Whereas, closed-loop LVNS (CL-LVNS) driven by a BP marker may be superior to open-loop LVNS, there are situations (e.g., exercising) when hypertension is normal. Therefore, an ideal anti-RH CL-LVNS system requires a variable to avoid stimulation in such conditions, for example, a respiratory marker ideally extracted from the LVN. As the LVN conducts respiratory signals, this study aimed to investigate if such signals can be recorded using implantable means and if a marker to monitor respiration could be derived from such recordings...

A novel therapeutic approach for treating resistant hypertension could be the use of bioelectronic medicines to achieve blood pressure (BP) control in implanted patients by closed-loop stimulation of the left vagus nerve (LVN). However, such a technology would require an implantable BP marker, which is not available yet. As it is known that the LVN conducts afferent BP-related signals, this study aimed to investigate if such signals could be recorded with implantable means and used to derive BP markers. The present experiments were performed in anesthetized pigs subjected to a transient or stable BP increase induced by adrenaline administration...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate feasibility of computed tomography (CT) coronal multiplane reconstruction image (CMRI) to determine subaxial cervical pedicle screw (PS) entry point and guide lateral vertebral notch (LVN)-referred technique for subaxial cervical PS insertion. METHODS: Cervical CT scans were performed in 40 volunteers. PS entry point was determined by quantitating PS entry point related to LVN on CMRI. Pedicle mediolateral angle (α) and cephalocaudad angle (β) were also measured to guide the trajectory of PS insertion...

BACKGROUND: Levofloxacin is a potent antibiotic with severe side effects due to its high doses. Bacterial resistance may be due to frequent use of antibiotics. Biogenic gold nanoparticles conjugated levofloxacin (Au-HSA-LvN-NPs) were developed by Human Serum Albumin (HSA) and nitrate reductasemediated pathways. METHODS: Au-HSA-LvN-NPs (size = 27.2 ± 1 nm) were readily generated with high emulsion stability zeta potential (-13.3 mV). The developed nanoparticles were also characterized by UVvisible spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy and Dynamic Light Scattering techniques...

INTRODUCTION: isolated left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) is a heart disease with rather distinct morphologic and clinical manifestations. Available in the literature information about LVNC considering multiple left ventricle abnormal chords (LVAC) as one of its criterion motivated us to review the results obtained in the study of young patients with this pathology. The aim of the research was to demonstrate different clinical variants of left ventricular non-compaction course in adult patients and to clarify some pathogenetic aspects of this pathology...

BACKGROUND: The proportion of registered nurses (RNs) with employment in health-related positions before their initial RN education has increased in the past two decades. Previous research found that prior health-related employment is positively associated with RN workforce supply, potentially due to the wage differences based on different career paths. This study's objective is to test the hypotheses that prior health-related employment is associated with differences in starting wages and with different rates of wage growth for experience as an RN...

In this paper, we have introduced a general modeling approach for dynamic nonlinear systems that utilizes a variant of the simulated annealing algorithm for training the Laguerre-Volterra network (LVN) to overcome the local minima and convergence problems and employs a pruning technique to achieve sparse LVN representations with l1 regularization. We tested this new approach with computer simulated systems and extended it to autoregressive sparse LVN (ASLVN) model structures that are suitable for input-output modeling of nonlinear systems that exhibit transitions in dynamic states, such as the Hodgkin-Huxley (H-H) equations of neuronal firing...

OBJECTIVES: Patients treated with definitive chemoradiation for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPC) experience excellent outcomes but treatment toxicities remain significant. The adoption of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) reduced morbidity by allowing targeting of at risk areas while sparing uninvolved regions. We explored whether level V lymphatics (LVN) can be omitted from elective volumes in OPC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This analysis included 408 patients treated for stage III/IV OPC with IMRT at our institution...

Registered nurses (RN) who held prior health-related employment in occupations other than licensed practical or vocational nursing (LPN/LVN) are reported to have increased rapidly in the past decades. Researchers examined whether prior health-related employment affects RN workforce supply. A cross-sectional bivariate probit model using the 2008 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses was esti- mated. Prior health-related employment in relatively lower-wage occupations, such as allied health, clerk, or nursing aide, was positively associated with working s an RN...

According to our previous studies, stimulation of the red nucleus (RN) facilitates the low-threshold afferent-evoked jaw-opening reflex (L-JOR). It has been reported that the RN projects to the superior (SVN), lateral (LVN) and inferior vestibular (IVN) nuclei. The SVN and the LVN have reciprocal intrinsic connections with the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN). Our previous study demonstrated that stimulation of the vestibular nuclear complex (VN) modulates the L-JOR. These facts suggest that RN-induced facilitation of the L-JOR is mediated via the VN...

In resting state fMRI (rs-fMRI), only functional connectivity (FC) reductions in the default mode network (DMN) are normally reported as a biomarker for Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this investigation we have developed a comprehensive strategy to characterize the FC changes occurring in multiple networks and applied it in a pilot study of subjects with AD and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), compared to healthy controls (HC). Resting state networks (RSNs) were studied in 14 AD (70 ± 6 years), 12 MCI (74 ± 6 years), and 16 HC (69 ± 5 years)...

AIMS: Lavender essential oil (Lvn) has been reported to have anti-inflammatory effects. Bronchial asthma is characterized by bronchial allergic inflammation with airway remodeling. Therefore, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory effect of Lvn on experimentally induced bronchial asthma in a murine model. MAIN METHODS: BALB/c mice were sensitized by an intraperitoneal injection of ovalbumin (OVA) at days 0 and 14, and subsequently challenged with nebulized OVA on days 28-30 (Control-Asthma group)...
