INTRODUCTION: Management of severe vasoplegic shock in overdose can be very challenging. We describe a case of severe refractory vasodilatory shock in poisoning where methylene blue (MB) was used with success. However, the patient subsequently developed severe Serotonin Syndrome (SS) as a result of an interaction between serotonergic drugs and MB. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old male developed severe vasoplegic shock 1.5 hours after overdosing on several different medications including quetiapine slow release, quetiapine immediate release, desvenlafaxine slow release, venlafaxine, amlodipine, ramipril, fluoxetine, promethazine and lithium...

A novel series of indole and benzimidazole bichalcophene diamidine derivatives were prepared to study their antimicrobial activity against the tropical parasites causing African sleeping sickness and malaria. The dicyanoindoles needed to synthesize the target diamidines were obtained through Stille coupling reactions while the bis-cyanobenzimidazoles intermediates were made via condensation/cyclization reactions of different aldehydes with 4-cyano-1,2-diaminobenzene. Different amidine synthesis methodologies namely, lithium bis-trimethylsilylamide (LiN[Si(CH3)3]2) and Pinner methods were used to prepare the diamidines...

BACKGROUND Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a chronic involuntary movement disorder frequently induced by dopamine receptor blockers, particularly first-generation antipsychotics. Until recently, management of TD was restricted to lowering the dose of the current medication, switching to another medication, or using off-label treatments with insufficient evidence of efficacy. Valbenazine, a vesicular monoamine transporter-2 (VMAT2) inhibitor, became the first drug to be approved by the FDA specifically for the treatment of TD...

Osteoporotic bone fractures are highly prevalent and involve lengthy recovery. Lithium, commonly used in psychiatric medicine, inhibits glycogen synthase kinase-3β in the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, leading to up-regulation of osteogenesis. Our recent preclinical work demonstrated that a 20mg/kg lithium dose administered beginning 7 days post-fracture for 14 days optimally improved femoral fracture healing in healthy rats at 4 weeks post fracture (46% higher torsional strength). In this study, lithium treatment was evaluated for healing of osteoporotic bone fractures...

Nearly all implantable bioelectronics are powered by bulky batteries which limit device miniaturization and lifespan. Moreover, batteries contain toxic materials and electrolytes that can be dangerous if leakage occurs. Herein, an approach to fabricate implantable protein-based bioelectrochemical capacitors (bECs) employing new nanocomposite heterostructures in which 2D reduced graphene oxide sheets are interlayered with chemically modified mammalian proteins, while utilizing biological fluids as electrolytes is described...

The underlying mechanisms for the neuroprotective effects of lithium chloride in neurodegenerative diseases such as seizures remain unknown. In present study the downstream signaling pathway of phospho-ERK/NMDA receptors/nitric oxide has been studied. For this purpose, acute and chronic effect of lithium in seizure animal model and the interaction of NMDA receptor antagonist (MK-801) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) inhibitor (7-NI) with these neuroprotection has been studied. Acute lithium administration showed pro-convulsive properties in pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizure model while chronic treatment increased the seizure threshold significantly...

The effects of erythropoietin on osteoblasts and bone formation are controversially discussed. Since patients with myelodysplastic syndromes often display excessively high erythropoietin level, we aimed to analyze the effect of erythropoietin on osteoblast function in myelodysplastic syndromes and define the role of Wnt signaling in this process. Expression of osteoblast-specific genes and subsequent osteoblasts mineralization was increased in mesenchymal stromal cells from healthy young donors by in vitro erythropoietin treatment...

In this work, we report for the very first time on the thermoluminescence (TL) and afterglow (AG) properties of Li2ZrO3. The ternary oxide Li2ZrO3 was synthesized by solid state reaction of a mixture of Li2CO3 and ZrO2 subjected to thermal annealing at 400°C for 2h and 1000°C during 24h in air. The characteristic glow curves of beta particle irradiated samples exhibit an intense TL emission located around 150°C. From the shape of the TL curve, a 0.4 form factor was determined, suggesting that first order kinetics processes are involved...

Extraction and processing of cassiterite (SnO2) left large tailings with high concentrations of tin, tungsten, molybdenum and lithium. Information on the phytotoxicity of mine waste is important with regard to ecological hazards. Exposure studies help to identify plants useful for the stabilization of waste tips and the phytomining of metals. A greenhouse study was performed using a dilution series of mine waste and four crops, a halophytic and a metallophytic species to derive dose response curves. Based on effective doses for growth reductions, sensitivity increased in the following order: maize > common buckwheat > quinoa > garden bean...

Microglia activation and associated inflammatory response are involved in the pathogenesis of different neurodegenerative diseases. We have reported that Notch-1 and NF-κB/p65 signalling pathways operate in synergy in regulating the production of proinflammatory mediators in activated microglia. In the latter, there is also evidence by others that glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β) mediates the release of proinflammatory cytokines but the interrelationships between the three signalling pathways have not been fully clarified...

This study aims to investigate the role of zolpidem in lithium-pilocarpine induced status epilepticus (SE) and probable mechanisms involved in seizure threshold alteration. In the present study, lithium chloride (127mg/kg) was administered 20h prior to pilocarpine (60mg/kg) to induce SE in adult male Wistar rats. Different doses of zolpidem (0.1, 1, 2, 5, 10mg/kg) were injected 30min before pilocarpine administration. Furthermore, to find out whether nitric oxide (NO) plays a role in the observed effect, L-arginine and L-NAME were injected 15min before zolpidem...

Proper neuronal function requires essential biological cargoes to be packaged within membranous vesicles and transported, intracellularly, through the extensive outgrowth of axonal and dendritic fibers. The precise spatiotemporal movement of these cargoes is vital for neuronal survival and, thus, is highly regulated. In this study we test how the axonal movement of a neuropeptide containing dense core vesicle (DCV) responds to alcohol stressors. We found that ethanol induces a strong anterograde bias in vesicle movement...

BACKGROUND: Thermoluminescent detectors, type MTS-6, containing isotope 6Li (lithium) are sensitive in the range of thermal neutron energy; the 239Pu-Be (plutonium-and-beryllium) source emits neutrons in the energy range from 1 to 11 MeV. These seemingly contradictory elements may be combined by using the paraffin moderator, a determined density of thermal neutrons in the paraffin block and a conversion coefficient neutron flux to kerma, not forgetting the simultaneous registration of the photon radiation inseparable from the companion neutron radiation...

BACKGROUND: Lithium carbonate is valuable and effective agent in the treatment and prophylaxis of mood disorders, particularly bipolar disorder (BD). Due to its narrow therapeutic range, frequent serum lithium estimation is necessary. To avoid the discomfort of frequent venipuncture, a non-invasive method for serum lithium concentration is needed. An alternative method of determining lithium level could be saliva or urine. Literature data regarding the reliability of saliva lithium levels is not conclusive...
