High quality data on efficacy of L-Ornithine L-Aspartate (LOLA) in cirrhotics with bouts of overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) is missing. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of intravenous LOLA in reversal of bouts of OHE in cirrhotics. In this prospective double-blind randomized placebo controlled trial conducted at two tertiary care institutes in India, 370 cirrhotics with bouts of OHE were screened. After exclusion, 193 (52.16%) patients were randomized to receive either intravenous infusions of LOLA (n=98), 30 grams daily or Placebo (n=95) for 5 days...

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the major subtype of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) that is resistant to conventional radiation and chemotherapy. It is a challenge to explore effective therapeutic targets and drugs for this kind of cancer. Transcription factor Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5) exerts diverse functions in various tumor types. By analyzing cohorts of the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data sets, we find that KLF5 expression is suppressed in ccRCC patients and higher level of KLF5 expression is associated with better prognostic outcome...

OBJECTIVES: To preserve renal function, partial nephrectomy (PN) is recommended to patients with small renal masses. However, controversy still exists as to whether prolonged ischemia time adversely affects the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) after PN. We analyzed the effect of prolonged warm ischemia time (WIT) on long-term renal function following PN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed data from 1,816 patients who underwent PN for clinical T1 renal tumor...

Leiomyoma, the benign tumor of smooth muscle cell origin, is commonly seen in genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts. Primary intracranial leiomyoma, however, is extremely rare occurrence. We hereby report a case of Epstein-Barr negative primary intracranial leiomyoma in a middle-aged renal transplant recipient, which mimicked left frontal parasagittal meningioma on neuroimaging. The tumor was completely excised and diagnosis of leiomyoma was clinched on pathological analysis with immunohistochemistry. The patient improved after tumor removal, and no evidence of tumor recurrence was noted on follow-up study after 10 months postsurgically...

Keratin 8 (KRT8) plays an essential role in the development and metastasis of multiple human cancers. However, its role in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) remains unexplored. Here, we investigated the expression pattern, clinical significance, and function of KRT8 in ccRCC. KRT8 mRNA and protein levels were determined in two large cohorts using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and tissue microarray (TMA) immunohistochemistry (IHC), respectively. We found that KRT8 expression was upregulated in ccRCC and vein tumor thrombi (VTTs)...

Horseshoe kidney is the most common congenital renal fusion anomaly with an incidence of 1 in 400-600 individuals. The most common type is fusion at the lower poles seen in greater than 90% of the cases, with the rest depicting fusion at the upper poles, resulting in an inverted horseshoe kidney. Embryologically, there are two theories hypothesizing the genesis of horseshoe kidney - mechanical fusion theory and teratogenic event theory. As an entity, horseshoe kidney is an association of two anatomic anomalies, namely, ectopia and malrotation...

Metastatic neoplasms of the thyroid are uncommon when compared to primary tumors of the gland. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a highly aggressive tumor of the urinary system. It can spread all over the body. Isolated solitary metastases of RCC to the thyroid are very rarely observed. A 64-year-old woman with a history of left radical nephrectomy for RCC, was referred to our clinic with palpable thyroid nodule. Ultrasound confirmed the nodule on the left lobe. Histopathological examination of the thyroidectomy specimen revealed that there were two solitary metastasis of RCC...

Cisplatin (CP) is a potent and widely used chemotherapeutic agent. However, the clinical benefits of CP are compromised because it elicits nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. In this study, we investigated the nephroprotective effects of the phytochemical genipin (GP) isolated from the gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) fruit, using a murine model of CP-induced nephropathy. GP pretreatment attenuated the CP-induced renal tissue injury by diminishing the serum blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and cystatin C levels, as well as those of kidney injury molecule-1...

BACKGROUND: The global increase of obesity parallels the obesity-related glomerulopathy (ORG) epidemic. Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists were well recognized to attenuate renal injury independent of glucose control in diabetic nephropathy. There are limited studies focusing on their effects on ORG. We explored the effects of incretin-based therapies on early ORG and the inflammatory responses involved mainly concentrated on mast cell (MC) and macrophage (M) infiltration and local pro-inflammatory factors...

Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC) represents 5% of all RCC cases and frequently demonstrates multiple chromosomal losses and an indolent pattern of local growth, but can demonstrate aggressive features and resistance to treatment in a metastatic setting. Cell line models are an important tool for the investigation of tumor biology and therapeutic drug efficacy. Currently, there are few ChRCC-derived cell lines and none is well characterized. This study characterizes a novel ChRCC-derived cell line model, UOK276...

Background: Primary renal lymphoma (PRL) is an exceptionally rare disease with under 50 reported cases in the literature. PRL is an aggressive condition that can present with nonspecific symptoms and local invasion mimicking renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We present an unusual case involving a collision tumor between PRL and RCC. Case Presentation: The patient is a 62-year-old immunosuppressed man with an incidental left renal mass on cross-sectional imaging. Renal mass biopsy confirmed clear cell type RCC. He underwent robot-assisted, laparoscopic left radical nephrectomy for presumed RCC without evidence for extrarenal disease or discernable lymphadenopathy...
