A method is described which combines the best features of the fire-assay procedure with an atomic-absorption technique. The precious-metal bead resulting from the fire-assay concentration step is dissolved in acids, the solution evaporated to dryness and the residue dissolved in b measured quantity of cyanide solution. The atomicabsorption measurement of this solution allows the determination of as little as 0.017 ppm of silver, 0.08 ppm of gold, and/or 0.08 ppm of palladium in various precious-metat-bearing materials with a precision of +/- 1%...

The authors did a review of patients with lung neoplasms and cutaneous metatization diagnosed in the period from 1999 to 2004 and followed in the Pneumologic Oncologic department of the Hospital Sousa Martins (H SM). We have analysed the following variables: sex, race, hystologic diagnosis, clinical stage, therapeutics, impact of the appearance of cutaneous metastization and survival time. Five of the 114 patients with lung neoplasms (4.3%), presented with cutaneous metastization, two males and three females with an average age of 69 years...

We discuss how relational databases constitute an ideal framework for representing and analyzing large-scale genomic data sets in biology. As a case study, we describe a Drosophila splice-site database that we recently developed at Wesleyan University for use in research and teaching. The database stores data about splice sites computed by a custom algorithm using Drosophila cDNA transcripts and genomic DNA and supports a set of procedures for analyzing splice-site sequence space. A generic Web interface permits the execution of the procedures with a variety of parameter settings and also supports custom structured query language queries...

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the optimal management of cervical nodal metasta of unknown primary sites. METHODS: The clinical data of 114 patients of cervical nodal metastases of unknown primary sites were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: For metatic masses of the upper and/or middle part of the neck, the optimal approach varied depnding on the histologic type. Poorly-differentiated carcinoma was treated with radiotherapy, squamous-cell carcinoma was treated with radiotherapy plus surgery, while papillary adenocarcinoma was treated by combined radical thyroidectomy...

Proper prefetching of relevant prior examinations from a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) archive, when a patient is scheduled for a new imaging study, and sending the historic images to the display station where the new examination is expected to be routed and subsequently read out, can greatly facilitate interpretation and review, as well as enhance radiology departmental workflow and PACS performance. In practice, it has proven extremely difficult to implement an automatic prefetch as successful as the experienced fileroom clerk...

We have previously reported that in Guatemala, the calcium, iron, and zinc contents of tortillas from rural areas are higher that that of tortillas from urban centers. This study examines variation in the calcium, iron, zinc and copper content of tortilla according to the implements used for making tortillas and inquires as to whether preparation effects mediate rural-urban variation in tortilla mineral content. Tortilla samples and information on how the tortillas were prepared were collected from the female heads of a total of 50 households from three rural, two semi-urban and one low income urban community...

Authors present some of their results from an epidemiological study on the effect of fenitrothion (Metation EK-50) on the organism of occupationally exposed workers in the production of this preparation and in female workers in the packing room during a 5-year period. The results of clinical examinations pointed to parasympathetic stimulation and disposition to hypotonia. Neurological and psychiatric findings revealed a low-grade pseudoneurasthenic syndrome in 33% of females and in 15% of males. The results of psychodiagnostic tests after the exposure to fenitrothion and its intermediate products showed partial deterioration of retention, impairment of visuomotor coordination of movements in tapping and that or orientation readiness, prolonged average time of decision-making and prolonged average reaction time for complex sensorimotor responses...

Using metal-ion buffers it was possible to remove Zn2+, Mg2+ and Mn2+ ions of pig kidney alkaline phosphatase reversibly. The dissociation constants obtained are KEMg: 4 X 10(-7) M, KEMn: 4 X 10(-8) M and KEZn: 8 X 10(-13) M (22 degrees C, pH: 9.6, mu: 0.07).

Susceptibility to fenitrothion in all stages of unfed ticks Ixodes ricinus increases with their age and this fact is reflected in the effectiveness of various dosages of insecticides applied for area control. The following minimum, but fully effective dosages of the dust Metation P-5 and the spray Metation E-50 (both preparations contain fenitrothion) for application in separate seasons have been ascertained: In September and October 1 kg of fenitrothion per ha of treated area ensures complete control of unfed ticks until the winter of current year...

Dentition in pre-Hispanic Mexican skulls has been examined in ancient Tenochtitlan--present-day Mexico City--and many different regions of the country, recently excavated. We have reached the conclusion that then, as now, there existed similar dental anomalies in number and position: the lack of certain teeth and the impaction of third molars and upper canines. So far, we have found decay only in back teeth Figs. 11 and 12 A and B). Most frequent was attrition, the severe wearing away of the chewing surface, which must certainly have been due to the primitive diet of seed, hard and dry, mixed with some abrasive material, produced by the grinding of stone against stone (metate) (Figs...

The authors describe new cases of human dermatitis caused by Pyemotes herfsi occurring in the food mixing shed for the farrowing house in the piggery at a farm in the destrict of Olomouc, where seven persons handling feedstuff were infected. The disease became manifest as a papular rash, appearing particularly on the back, and all over the body except on the hands and face. When the afflicted person discontinued work in the feed mixing shed, the rash disappeared quickly. The mites were found in the granular dust accumulated in the loft above the food mixing shed...
