Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor of the lung, also known as clear cell "sugar" tumor, is a rare benign tumor arising from perivascular epithelioid cells. Herein, we present a case of spindle cell subtype of pulmonary perivascular epithelioid cell tumor with prominent calcification and malignant potential in a 49-year-old woman. Histologically, the striking feature of this lesion was attributed to the presence of spindle cells arranged in a diffuse pattern, which is a pitfall for diagnosis. However, some of the lesion contained polygonal tumor cells with clear abundant cytoplasm surrounded by thin-walled vascular spaces...

Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a metabolite of the essential amino acid leucine that has been reported to have anabolic effects on protein metabolism. The aims of this article were to summarize the results of studies of the effects of HMB on skeletal muscle and to examine the evidence for the rationale to use HMB as a nutritional supplement to exert beneficial effects on muscle mass and function in various conditions of health and disease. The data presented here indicate that the beneficial effects of HMB have been well characterized in strength-power and endurance exercise...

Three new 3d-3d heterometallic complexes, [CuM(II)(hmb)6(OH)]ClO4·H2O (M = Zn (1), Ni (2) and Co (3)) (Hhmb = 2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzaldehyde), have been synthesized. Structural analysis reveals that the three complexes are isostructural. Three Cu(II) ions are in a perfect trigonal geometrical frustration and form a tetrahedral frustrated system with the introduced fourth ion Zn(II)/Ni(II)/Co(II). Magnetic studies indicate the antiferromagnetic coupling between metal ions in all 1, 2 and 3. Due to the geometrical frustration, spin-frustrated magnetism is also a typical feature of 1-3 and the magnetostructural correlation is far more complicated than their structures...

BACKGROUND: Pigmented paraganglioma is a special type of paraganglioma, and it is rare in the thyroid. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 41-year-old woman who had complained of a mass in the thyroid gland. Histology revealed tumor cells arranged in a nest-like or organoid pattern, separated by delicate fibrovascular septa. Two distinct components were observed. In the first, which constituted the majority of the tumor cells, no pigments were observed. In the second, a few cells with pigment showed intercellular substance, but the structure was unclear...

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland. Albeit common, histological variants have rarely been noted in MEC. Here, we report a 49-year-old man with a sublingual gland tumor. Histologically, the tumor was composed of spindle cells arranged in interlacing fascicules or globular nests. A few bland small glands containing mucous cells were also scattered. The spindle tumor cells completely lacked immunoreactivity for cytokeratin, and exhibited immunoreactivity for vimentin, S-100, HMB-45, Melan A, and SOX10...

Clear-cell sarcoma is a rare, malignant soft tissue tumor that displays melanocytic differentiation with a distinct molecular profile. It is rarely localized in the gastrointestinal tract. Herein we reported a case of multiple synchronous clear-cell sarcomas of the gastrointestinal tract with parotid gland metastasis. A 51-year-old male patient presented with a growing painless mass under the right ear. A preoperative positron emission tomography/computed tomography showed multiple intestinal masses and a mass in the right parotid with increased glucose uptake, and he underwent operative treatment with resection of three tumors in the jejunum and ileum and then received a right parotidectomy...

The human herpes virus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), is a known oncogenic virus and plays important roles in life-threatening T/NK-cell lymphoproliferative disorders (T/NK-cell LPD) such as hypersensitivity to mosquito bite (HMB), chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV), and NK/T-cell lymphoma/leukemia. During the clinical courses of HMB and CAEBV, patients frequently develop malignant lymphomas and the diseases passively progress sequentially. In the present study, gene expression of CD16((-))CD56((+))-, EBV((+)) HMB, CAEBV, NK-lymphoma, and NK-leukemia cell lines, which were established from patients, was analyzed using oligonucleotide microarrays and compared to that of CD56(bright)CD16(dim/-) NK cells from healthy donors...

Context: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is common and incapacitating. Aberrant menstrual endometrial repair may result in HMB. The transforming growth factor (TGF)-β superfamily contributes to tissue repair, but its role in HMB is unknown. Objective: We hypothesized that TGF-β1 is important for endometrial repair, and women with HMB have aberrant TGF-β1 activity at menses. Participants/Setting: Endometrial biopsies were collected from women, and menstrual blood loss objectively measured [HMB >80 mL/cycle; normal menstrual bleeding (NMB) <80 mL]...
