Biocontrol of plant diseases through induction of systemic resistance is an environmental friendly substitute to chemicals in crop protection measures. Different biotic and abiotic elicitors can trigger the plant for induced resistance. Present study was designed to explore the potential of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PM12 in inducing systemic resistance in tomato against Fusarium wilt. Initially the bioactive compound, responsible for ISR, was separated and identified from extracellular filtrate of P. aeruginosa PM12...

The effects of dietary β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation during gestation on bone, growth plate, and articular cartilage in newborns were determined. Thermal analysis of articular cartilage was performed to examine the structural changes in collagen. At day 70 of gestation, a total of 12 sows (Large White Polish breed, at the second parity) were randomly assigned to two groups, with each group receiving either a basal diet or the same diet supplemented with 0.2 g/day HMB until the 90th day...

In a previous study it was shown that lower factor XI (FXI) levels in women with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). Our aim was to determine the single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) in the F11 gene in women with HMB. In addition, an extensive literature search was performed to determine the clinical significance of each SNV. Patients referred for HMB (PBAC-score >100) were included. With direct sequencing analysis of all 15 exons and flanking introns of the F11 gene, 29 different non-structural SNVs were detected in 49 patients with HMB...

Bcl-2-associated athanogene 3 (BAG3), a co-chaperone of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), exerts anti-apoptotic effects in various malignant tumors. However, relationships between choroidal melanoma and BAG3 are poorly studied. This study investigated the expression of BAG3 in a case of human choroidal melanoma. Funduscopy, computed tomography, and single-photon emission computed tomography with the intravenous injection of N-isopropyl-p-[(123)I] iodoamphetamine strongly indicated choroidal melanoma in a 68-year-old woman...

Highly efficient nonlinear optical organic crystals are very attractive for various photonic applications including terahertz (THz) wave generation. Up to now, only two classes of ionic crystals based on either pyridinium or quinolinium with extremely large macroscopic optical nonlinearity have been developed. This study reports on a new class of organic nonlinear optical crystals introducing electron-accepting benzothiazolium, which exhibit higher electron-withdrawing strength than pyridinium and quinolinium in benchmark crystals...

Myxomas are mesenchymal tumors commonly found in the heart and skin. Renal myxomas are rare, having only been documented 14 times. Our case is a 55-year-old woman who presented to our clinic after a right renal mass was incidentally found on CT. Evaluation with MRI showed a mass that appeared to arise from the supero-medial cortex of the right kidney. As the imaging was concerning for renal cell carcinoma, the patient underwent a partial nephrectomy. Microscopic examination showed a well-circumscribed mass with polygonal to spindle-shaped cells in a granular eosinophilic cytoplasm...

In recent years, several pet food recalls have been attributed to Salmonella contamination. In addition to the negative impacts on animal health, Salmonella-contaminated pet foods have been linked to infection in humans. With that in mind, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has set forth a zero-tolerance policy for Salmonella in pet foods. Typically, pet foods are extruded or processed at high temperatures that are sufficient to reduce pathogenic bacteria. However, the possibility for postextrusion contamination still exists...

PEComas represent a family of uncommon mesenchymal tumors composed of "perivascular epithelioid cells" with a distinct immunophenotype that typically shows both myogenic and melanocytic differentiation. The PEComa family includes angiomyolipoma (AML), clear cell "sugar" tumor of the lung and extra pulmonary sites, lymphangioleiomyomatosis and clear cell myomelanocytic tumor of the falciform ligament/ligamentum teres. Very rarely, PEComas may arise in the skin. Primary cutaneous PEComas typically display a dermal proliferation of epithelioid cells with pale, clear, or granular pink cytoplasm arranged in nests and trabeculae with an intervening arborizing network of delicate capillaries...

Cutaneous angiosarcoma can be challenging to diagnose particularly when poorly vasoformative and on biopsies. We report a case of a cutaneous angiosarcoma with strong positivity for tyrosinase, the first to our knowledge, initially misdiagnosed as melanoma. We subsequently evaluated the reactivity of panmelanocytic cocktail (tyrosinase, HMB-45 and melan-A), SOX10, tyrosinase and MITF in a large tissue microarray (TMA) of angiosarcoma. The TMA included 142 cases of angiosarcomas (29 cutaneous, 22 primary breast, 41 post-radiation breast, 15 visceral, 26 deep soft tissue and bone, 5 chronic lymphedema-associated, and 4 angiosarcomas arising in other sarcomas)...

β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a metabolite derived from leucine and its ketoacid alpha-ketoisocaproate. Leucine has a role in regulating protein synthesis in muscle cells, and HMB seems to be a key active metabolite in such regulation. HMB has been shown to modulate muscle protein degradation by inhibiting the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathway, to up-regulate protein synthesis via the mTOR pathway, and to stabilize cell membranes via the rate limiting enzyme to cholesterol synthesis HMG- coenzyme A reductase...

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor of the lung, also known as clear cell "sugar" tumor, is a rare benign tumor arising from perivascular epithelioid cells. Herein, we present a case of spindle cell subtype of pulmonary perivascular epithelioid cell tumor with prominent calcification and malignant potential in a 49-year-old woman. Histologically, the striking feature of this lesion was attributed to the presence of spindle cells arranged in a diffuse pattern, which is a pitfall for diagnosis. However, some of the lesion contained polygonal tumor cells with clear abundant cytoplasm surrounded by thin-walled vascular spaces...

Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a metabolite of the essential amino acid leucine that has been reported to have anabolic effects on protein metabolism. The aims of this article were to summarize the results of studies of the effects of HMB on skeletal muscle and to examine the evidence for the rationale to use HMB as a nutritional supplement to exert beneficial effects on muscle mass and function in various conditions of health and disease. The data presented here indicate that the beneficial effects of HMB have been well characterized in strength-power and endurance exercise...

Three new 3d-3d heterometallic complexes, [CuM(II)(hmb)6(OH)]ClO4·H2O (M = Zn (1), Ni (2) and Co (3)) (Hhmb = 2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzaldehyde), have been synthesized. Structural analysis reveals that the three complexes are isostructural. Three Cu(II) ions are in a perfect trigonal geometrical frustration and form a tetrahedral frustrated system with the introduced fourth ion Zn(II)/Ni(II)/Co(II). Magnetic studies indicate the antiferromagnetic coupling between metal ions in all 1, 2 and 3. Due to the geometrical frustration, spin-frustrated magnetism is also a typical feature of 1-3 and the magnetostructural correlation is far more complicated than their structures...

BACKGROUND: Pigmented paraganglioma is a special type of paraganglioma, and it is rare in the thyroid. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 41-year-old woman who had complained of a mass in the thyroid gland. Histology revealed tumor cells arranged in a nest-like or organoid pattern, separated by delicate fibrovascular septa. Two distinct components were observed. In the first, which constituted the majority of the tumor cells, no pigments were observed. In the second, a few cells with pigment showed intercellular substance, but the structure was unclear...
