Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is the major gynecologic complaint of adolescents admitting to hospital. Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is the most common clinical presentation of AUB. Anovulatory cycles owing to immature hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis is the leading etiology of HMB and there is an accompanying bleeding disorder in almost %20 of patients with HMB. Additionally, endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism, hyperprolactinemia and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are possible causes of AUB...

Sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM) in the maxillary sinus is a rare disease condition. Compared to oral mucosal melanoma, SNMM has a bulky, exophytic, and polypoid appearance, is weakly pigmented, and associated with unspecific symptoms. Due to these features, SNMM in the maxillary sinus has been misdiagnosed as nasal polyps and chronic sinusitis. In this case report, we described SNMM occurring in the right maxillary sinus simulated as a cystic or benign lesion. Cortical bone thinning and expansion were observed around the mass...

Malignant gastrointestinal melanoma is usually a metastatic lesion. We report the case of a 67-year-old female patient who presented with intermittent abdominal pain, fever, rigor and diarrhoea. CT scan of the abdomen revealed a large mass at the right iliac fossa with features concerning for intra-abdominal abscess. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed the preoperative diagnosis of abscess, and a right hemicolectomy was performed. Histopathological examination of the surgical specimen was indicative of malignant melanoma, and immunohistochemical examination showed positivity to S100 protein, Melan-A, HMB-45 and vimentin...

BACKGROUND: Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia (GT) is an inherited genetic disorder caused by defects in the platelet membrane glycoproteins IIb/IIIA, and is associated with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). HMB is a common complication in female patients, and many adolescent girls with this disease have issues with HMB beginning at menarche. The available treatment modalities including anti-fibrinolytics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and hormonal therapies though are effective, their associated side effects, limited efficacy and the poor compliance is a challenge in management of HMB...

Kissing nevus is a very rare congenital melanocytic nevus. Here, we describe one case of kissing nevus on the penis. A 15-year boy presented with asymptomatic black to dark brown color patches on his penis. Histopathological findings showed that there were nests and cords of nevus cells in upper dermis. No significant cytologic atypia and mitoses were noted. Immunohistochemical stains revealed a partial positive for HMB-45 only in upper dermis and a stronger positivity for S-100 in almost all nevus cells. We diagnosed the lesion as kissing nevus of penis...

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal tumor, with distinctive morphology and expression of myo-melanocytic markers. Current scientific literature reported just 24 cases of pancreatic PEComas. With our systematic review, we aimed at improving our understanding of the disease, focusing on the knowledge gained on epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. METHODS: Based on the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic research was carried out on PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE, and EBSCO using the search terms: ("perivascular epithelioid cell tumor" OR ″PEComa") and ("pancreas "OR″ pancreatic")...

Malnutrition has been related to prolonged hospital stays, and to increases in readmission and mortality rates. In the NOURISH (Nutrition effect On Unplanned Readmissions and Survival in Hospitalized patients) study, administering a high protein oral nutritional supplement (ONS) containing beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HP-HMB) to hospitalised older adult patients led to a significant improvement in survival compared with a placebo treatment. The aim of this study was to determine whether HP-HMB would be cost-effective in Spain...

Choosing a potent selection antibiotic (SA), is a crucial success factor when creating stably transfected cell lines using an antibiotic selection marker. The selection capacity of this antibiotic is defined as its ability to kill sensitive, untransfected parental cells, while leaving resistant, transfected cells unharmed. Currently, no procedure has been described to determine this selection capacity. Therefore, we developed a protocol to obtain a numerical value, called the "selectivity factor" (SF), that defines the selection capacity of SAs...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a single-dose of β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate free acid (HMB-FA) supplementation on muscle recovery after a high-intensity exercise bout. Twenty-three trained young males were randomly assigned to receive either a single-dose supplementation of 3g of HMB-FA (n = 12; age 22.8 ± 3.0 years) or placebo (PLA; n = 11; age 22.9 ± 3.1 years). A muscle damage protocol was applied 60 minutes after supplementation, and consisted of seven sets of 20 drop jumps from a 60-cm box with 2-min rest intervals between sets...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: β-Hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (HMB) has been used for many years in athletes for muscle buildup and strength, and endurance enhancement. In recent years, its interest quickly expanded in older (diseased) populations and during (exercise) rehabilitation and recovery from hospitalization and surgery. We will discuss recent literature about HMB metabolism, its pharmacokinetics compared with the frequently used metabolite leucine, effectiveness of HMB to improve outcome in older diseased adults, and novel approaches for HMB use...

Melanoma may undergo dedifferentiation and sarcomatous transformation with loss of melanocytic markers. Dedifferentiated melanoma rarely forms true rhabdomyoblasts with skeletal muscle immunophenotype (rhabdomyosarcomatous heterologous component). A 52 year-old woman was diagnosed with invasive melanoma (Breslow depth 0.83 mm) of the upper back in 2012, treated by wide local excision only. In 2013, an axillary mass was excised to show metastatic melanoma with two morphologies: an epithelioid morphology expressing S100 and MART-1 and a spindled morphology with loss of melanocytic markers but strong expression of desmin...

Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is common and debilitating, and often requires surgery due to hormonal side effects from medical therapies. Here we show that transient, physiological hypoxia occurs in the menstrual endometrium to stabilise hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) and drive repair of the denuded surface. We report that women with HMB have decreased endometrial HIF-1α during menstruation and prolonged menstrual bleeding. In a mouse model of simulated menses, physiological endometrial hypoxia occurs during bleeding...
