Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa), mesenchymal tumors morphologically characterized by epithelioid cells, coexpress melanocytic and muscle markers. Herein, we describe a heretofore-undescribed tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC)-related neoplasm, morphologically resembling a soft tissue fibroma-like lesion, but showing an immunophenotype resembling PEComa. We identified 3 soft tissue fibroma-like lesions in individuals with TSC. We also evaluated 6 TSC-related periungual fibroma as well as a range of non-TSC fibroma-like lesions (n=19)...

Renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) with t(6,11) are very rare tumours. Only a few cases have been reported so far. t(6,11) results in fusion of alpha gene and transcription factor EB (TFEB) gene resulting in the overexpression of TFEB. The specific light and immunohistochemical features help in the diagnosis of this rare type of tumor. We report a case of t(6,11) RCC in a 38-year-old female who was incidentally found to have a right renal mass. We present this case to emphasize the typical light microscopic picture of this extremely rare tumor...

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of tumors of soft tissue and bone (STB) heavily relies on histological biopsies, whereas cytology is not widely used. CellientTM cell blocks often contain small tissue fragments. In addition to Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) interpretation of histological features, immunohistochemistry (IHC) can be applied after optimization of protocols. The objective of this retrospective study was to see whether this cytological technique allowed us to make a precise diagnosis of STB tumors...

A 47-year-old Japanese man was referred to hospital after the detection of a liver tumor. Dynamic computed tomography and Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging were consistent with a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). No perfusion defect was observed in the post-vascular phase of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Histopathological staining of the tumor cells was positive for antibodies against HMB-45 and CD68, confirming the diagnosis of hepatic angiomyolipoma (HAML). These findings indicated the presence of macrophages in HAML...

Salivary adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified (AdCaNOS) is a rare malignant tumor with potential diagnostic challenge, which mainly affects the parotid glands; however, the minor salivary glands can also be involved by AdCaNOS. This paper reports a case of a 45-year-old Afro-descendant woman complaining of a slow-growing mass with 6 months of evolution in the left superior vestibular fornix. Microscopic examination revealed an infiltrative epithelial neoplasm composed of predominantly solid growth pattern, arranged in a lobular configuration, admixed with glandular or ductal structures...

Menstruation is characterised by synchronous shedding and restoration of tissue integrity. An in vivo model of menstruation is required to investigate mechanisms responsible for regulation of menstrual physiology and to investigate common pathologies such as heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). We hypothesised that our mouse model of simulated menstruation would recapitulate the spatial and temporal changes in the inflammatory microenvironment of human menses. Three regulatory events were investigated: cell death (apoptosis), neutrophil influx and cytokine/chemokine expression...

Leucine (Leu) and its metabolites α-ketoisocaproate (KIC) and β-hydroxy-β-methyl butyrate (HMB) are potent regulators of protein turnover. The aim of this study was to compare the inhibitory effects of Leu, KIC, and HMB on protein degradation and to investigate the mechanisms involved. The results showed that the inhibitory effect of HMB (0.38 ± 0.04) was more potent than that of Leu (0.76 ± 0.04) and KIC (0.56 ± 0.04, P < 0.01), and was significantly abolished in the presence of LY294002 (1.48 ± 0...

Gentles and Phillips have submitted questions regarding three recent papers investigating ATP, HMB and the combination. The questions pertaining to the homogeneity of subjects' characteristics between the three different published papers, and why there appears to be differences in the number of subjects in placebo groups across studies. This response addresses each of these issues and demonstrates that there are no discrepancies between papers but rather a misunderstanding of the papers previously published...

Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is a common gynecological problem that has a significant impact on a woman's quality of life and the activities of daily living. Due to the difficulty in accurately describing menstrual bleeding abnormalities using older terminology, the PALM-COEIN classification system of the Federation Internationale de Gynecologie et d'Obstetrique was proposed to describe and identify the etiology of abnormal endometrial bleeding. As there is no single pathway that is associated with HMB, there are several therapeutic interventions involving different molecular pathways to reduce HMB...

There exists a large body of scientific evidence to support protein intakes in excess of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) (0.8g protein/kg/d) to promote the retention of skeletal muscle and loss of adipose tissue during dietary energy restriction. Diet-induced weight loss with as low as possible ratio of skeletal muscle to fat mass loss is a situation we refer to as high quality weight loss. We propose that high quality weight loss is often of importance to elite athletes in order to maintain their muscle (engine) and shed unwanted fat mass, potentially improving athletic performance...

We report the case of a 57-year-old man, who is hospitalized for the surgery of a gallbladder mass associated by an increase in fluorodeoxyglucose-activity on positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan. This is an incidental finding occurring during monitoring of a skin melanoma. A cholecystectomy is performed. Microscopic examination identified an infiltration of the gallbladder wall by a proliferation of atypical pigmented spindled melanocytes with numerous mitoses. The immunohistochemical analysis confirmed the melanocytic nature of this proliferation with the staining of HMB-45, S100 protein and Melan-A...

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency endometrial ablation (REA) is currently a second line treatment in women with heavy menstrual bleeding (MHB) if medical therapy (MTP) is contraindicated or unsatisfactory. Our objective is to compare the effectiveness and cost burden of MTP and REA in the initial treatment of HMB. METHODS: We performed a randomized trial at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota. The planned sample size was 60 patients per arm. A total of 67 women with HMB were randomly allocated to receive oral contraceptive pills (Nordette ®) or Naproxen (Naprosyn®) (n = 33) or REA (n = 34)...
