Uterine leiomyomata are the most common benign tumors of the gynecologic tract impacting up to 80% of women by 50 years of age. It is well established that these tumors are the leading cause for hysterectomy with an estimated total financial burden greater than $30 billion per year in the United States. However, for the woman who desires future fertility or is a poor surgical candidate, definitive management with hysterectomy is not an optimal management plan. Typical gynecologic symptoms of leiomyoma include infertility, abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB)/heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) and/or intermenstrual bleeding (IMB) with resulting iron-deficiency anemia, pelvic pressure and pain, urinary incontinence, and dysmenorrhea...

Anorectal melanoma is a rare aggressive disease. Due to its rarity and considerable histologic and immunohistochemical variabilities, misdiagnosis as lymphoma, carcinoma, sarcoma, and/or gastrointestinal stromal tumor is not uncommon, particularly in amelanotic cases. We reviewed histologic features and immunohistochemical stains of 19 anorectal melanoma cases. Histopathologic features were evaluated including junctional activity, melanin pigment, and morphologic features. Immunohistochemical stains were performed using Sox10, S100 protein, HMB-45, melan-A, CD56, and cytokeratins...

BACKGROUND: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a low-grade neoplasm characterized by the pulmonary infiltration of smooth muscle-like cells (LAM cells) and cystic destruction. Patients usually present with airway obstruction in pulmonary function tests (PFTs). Previous studies have shown correlations among histological parameters, lung function abnormalities and prognosis in LAM. We investigated the lung tissue expression of proteins related to the mTOR pathway, angiogenesis and enzymatic activity and its correlation with functional parameters in LAM patients...

OBJECTIVE: Cairn terriers with ocular melanosis (OM) accumulate large, heavily pigmented melanocytes in the anterior uvea. Darkly pigmented plaques develop within the sclera, leading us to hypothesize that OM uveal melanocytes may have an abnormal migratory capacity. ANIMALS STUDIED: Globes from OM-affected Cairn terriers and unaffected control eyes enucleated for reasons unrelated to this study were used for immunohistochemistry and to culture melanocytes for in vitro cell behavior assays...

Purpose: Melanocytomas are rare pigmented tumors that arise form melanocytes and have been reported in the central nervous system. Orbital melanocytomas "also known as blue nevus" are rarely reported. The occurrence of choroidal melanoma and orbital melanocytomas has never been described. Observations: This is a case of orbital melanocytoma in a 34 year old female who presented with left proptosis and ecchymosis. She has the right eye enucleated to treat a large choroidal melanoma, 6 years earlier...

Despite being rarely reported, improved diagnostic and prognostic indicators are necessary for treating malignant melanoma in rabbits. In this study, two cases of primary skin lesions, on the scrotum and on eyelid, with systemic metastases, were examined. The tumors formed intra-dermally by sheet-like proliferation of polymorphic cells, with anisocytosis and varying amount of melanin granules. Tumors had displaced almost 50% of the lung and liver tissue, and tumor metastasis was the cause of early death in both rabbits...

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate's (HMB) positive effects on recovery following exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). However, findings vary substantially across studies. OBJECTIVE: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted to assess the effects of HMB supplementation on recovery following EIMD by assessing indirect markers of muscle damage, namely creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) serum levels among healthy participants...

The composite of hierarchical faujasite nanosheets and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Hie-FAU/ZIF-8) has been successfully prepared via a stepwise deposition of ZIF-8 on modified zeolite surfaces. Compared to the direct deposition of MOF on zeolite surfaces, ZIF-8 nanospheres were selectively attached to external surfaces of the MOF ligand-grafted FAU crystals because of the enhancing interaction between zeolite and MOF in the composite. In addition, the degree of surface functionalization can be greatly enhanced due to the presence of hierarchical structures...

Oral intake of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB), arginine, and glutamine may ameliorate muscle loss by stimulating protein synthesis and decreasing protein degradation while simultaneously decreasing inflammation. Previous studies provide evidence for improvement in body composition with dietary supplementation of these ingredients among patients with muscle-wasting diseases. The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of this amino acid mixture on lean body mass, muscle volume, and physical function among healthy older adults...

Activation of human Vγ9/Vδ2 T cells by "phosphoantigens" (pAg), the microbial metabolite ( E )-4-hydroxy-3-methyl-but-2-enyl pyrophosphate (HMB-PP) and the endogenous isoprenoid intermediate isopentenyl pyrophosphate, requires expression of butyrophilin BTN3A molecules by presenting cells. However, the precise mechanism of activation of Vγ9/Vδ2 T cells by BTN3A molecules remains elusive. It is not clear what conformation of the three BTN3A isoforms transmits activation signals nor how externally delivered pAg accesses the cytosolic B30...

BACKGROUND: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is an important physical and social problem for women. Oral treatment for HMB includes antifibrinolytic drugs, which are designed to reduce bleeding by inhibiting clot-dissolving enzymes in the endometrium.Historically, there has been some concern that using the antifibrinolytic tranexamic acid (TXA) for HMB may increase the risk of venous thromboembolic disease. This is an umbrella term for deep venous thrombosis (blood clots in the blood vessels in the legs) and pulmonary emboli (blood clots in the blood vessels in the lungs)...

The various methods employed for the in ovo administration of different materials for promoting the health and productivity of poultry are discussed in this review article. The amnion has proven to be an effective site for injection and the timing of in ovo injection has commonly occurred at transfer. However, the volumes and dosages or concentrations of the materials administered vary depending on bird type, egg size, timing and site of injection, incubation system and regimen, and the type of material. Both manual and automated injections have been shown to be effective...

Management of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) in a woman with a history of thrombosis, or who is otherwise at high risk of thrombosis, or who takes medications for anticoagulation can present a challenge to health care providers. The goal of treating HMB is to reduce menstrual blood loss. First-line therapy is typically hormonal, and hormonal therapy can be contraindicated in women with a history of thrombosis unless they are on anticoagulation. As 70% of women on anticoagulation experience HMB, successful management of HMB may involve a modification in the anticoagulation or antiplatelet regimen, hormonal therapy tailored to the patient's situation, and/or surgical therapy...
