We propose a non-linear recursive solution to the problem of short-term prediction of glucose in type 1 diabetes. The Fixed Budget Quantized Kernel Least Mean Square (QKLMS-FB) algorithm is employed to construct a univariate model of subcutaneous glucose concentration, which: (i) handles nonlinearities by transforming the input space into a high-dimensional Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space and, (ii) finds a sparse solution by retaining a representative subset of the training input vectors. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of three nonlinear filters in online drift detection of continuous glucose monitors. The nonlinear filters are the extended Kalman filter (EKF), the unscented Kalman filter (UKF), and the particle filter (PF). They are all based on a nonlinear model of the glucose-insulin dynamics in people with type 1 diabetes. A multiscale model for blood glucose regulation in diabetes type I patients is constructed by integrating detailed metabolic network models for fat, liver and muscle cells into a whole body physiologically-based pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (pBPK/PD) model. The blood glucose regulation PBPK/PD model simulates the distribution and metabolization of glucose, insulin and glucagon on an organ and whole body level. The genome-scale metabolic networks in contrast describe intracellular reactions.
