BACKGROUND: The neonatal period is the crucial and vulnerable period of the human life cycle. Various research has been conducted worldwide that provide the baseline data on clinical profiles and predictors of outcomes of babies admitted to sick newborn care units (SNCUs). Nonetheless, studies on tribal areas and community outreach areas are rare. In the present study, predictors and profiles of patients admitted to SNCU, in the Dantewada and Bijapur districts of Chhattisgarh, India, were evaluated which shall help prioritize patient care and preventive approaches...

The implications of young childhood undernutrition on health, development and productivity are grave. In the last two decades, global and Indian studies on undernutrition in under five years have concluded that stunting and underweight rate increases steadily between 0-24 mo, and then stabilises. The available evidence highlights the significance of concentrating interventions to tackle child undernutrition in the first 1000 d of life, which should aim at universal coverage of essential nutrition interventions (ENIs) and maternal-child health care package comprising maternal nutrition care, adoption of appropriate infant and young child feeding practices (IYCF), iron-folic acid supplementation, immunization, deworming, appropriate management of childhood illness etc...

Wealth inequality in anthropometric failure is a persistent concern for policymakers in India. This necessitates a comprehensive analysis and identification of various risk factors that can explain the poor-rich gap in anthropometric failure among children in India. We analyze the fifth and fourth rounds of the Indian National Family Health Survey collected from June 2019 to April 2021 and January 2015 to December 2016, respectively. Two samples of children aged 0-59 and 6-23 months old with singleton birth, alive at the time of the survey with non-pregnant mothers, and with valid data on stunting, severe stunting, underweight, severely underweight, wasting, and severe wasting are included in the analytical samples from both rounds...

The aim of the systematic review and meta-analysis is to determine the stress and stressors experienced by the parents of high-risk neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in India. We included both quantitative and qualitative studies. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist and Critical Appraisal Skill Programme checklist were used to assess the quality of included studies. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, EBSCOhost, Web of Science, ProQuest, Microsoft Academic, DOAJ, Indian Citation Index, and J-Gate to identify relevant studies...

Progress to improve nutrition among women, infants and children in South Asia has fallen behind the pace needed to meet established global targets. Renewed political commitment and monitoring of nutrition interventions are required to improve coverage and quality of care. Our study aimed to assess the availability of national nutrition policies, programmes, and coverage data of nutrition interventions for women, children, and adolescents in eight countries in South Asia. We reviewed relevant policy and programme documents, examined questionnaires used in the most recent rounds of 20 nationally representative surveys, and generated an evidence gap map on the availability of policies, programmes, and survey data to track progress on coverage of globally recommended nutrition interventions...

INTRODUCTION: The situation for women experiencing mental health problems during pregnancy and postpartum in rural India is critical: a high burden of disease, a high estimated number of women are undiagnosed and untreated with mental health problems, a substantial gap in research on women's perinatal health, and severe stigma and discrimination. The SMARThealth Pregnancy study is a cluster randomised trial using a digital intervention to identify and manage anaemia, hypertension, and diabetes in the first year after birth in rural India...

BACKGROUND: In 2020, an estimated 287 000 women died globally from pregnancy-related causes and 2 million babies were stillborn. Many of these outcomes can be prevented by quality healthcare during pregnancy and childbirth. Within the continuum of maternal health, antenatal care (ANC) is a key moment in terms of contact with the health system, yet it remains an underutilized platform. This paper describes the protocol for a study conducted in collaboration with Ministries of Health and country research partners that aims to employ implementation science to systematically introduce and test the applicability of the adapted WHO ANC package in selected sites across four countries...

BACKGROUND: The Manyata program is a quality improvement initiative for private healthcare facilities in India which provided maternity care services. Under this initiative, technical assistance was provided to selected facilities in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Maharashtra which were interested in obtaining 'entry level certification' under the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) for provision of quality services. This paper describes the change in quality at those Manyata-supported facilities when assessed by the NABH standards of care...

Based on a triple difference estimation, this paper shows that the impact of a universal cash transfer on child nutrition differs by household wealth. In 2011, Odisha state in India introduced a conditional maternal cash transfer named "Mamata Scheme". Using data from the National Family Health Survey, I find that the program reduced child wasting by 7 percentage points, a 39% reduction compared to the average prevalence of wasting in the pre-program period. The reduction in child wasting is driven by children from households in the top four of five national wealth quintiles, for whom the program reduced wasting by 13 percentage points or a reduction of about 80%...

BACKGROUND: There has been much speculation about the role of inequitable gender norms and early marriage in mental health and suicide risks in girls and young women, but no prospective study has yet investigated this relationship. Understanding these links has become particularly important in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic which has led to increased risk of child marriage in the most vulnerable girls. METHODS: We examined the association between early marriage and mental health in girls using data from Understanding the Lives of Adolescents and Young Adults (UDAYA), a longitudinal study in adolescents in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, India...

BACKGROUND: Minority social status determined by religion, caste and tribal group affiliations, are usually treated as independent dimensions of inequities in India. This masks relative privileges and disadvantages at the intersections of religion-caste and religion-tribal group affiliations, and their associations with population health disparities. METHODS: Our analysis was motivated by applications of the intersectionality framework in public health, which underlines how different systems of social stratification mutually inform relative access to material resources and social privilege, that are associated with distributions of population health...

Multi-sectoral collaboration has been identified as a critical component in a wide variety of health and development initiatives. For India's Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme, which serves over 100 million people annually across more than one million villages, a key point of multi-sectoral collaboration - or "convergence", as it is often called in India - is between the three frontline worker cadres jointly responsible for delivering essential maternal and child health and nutritional services throughout the country: the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA), Anganwadi worker (AWW), and auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM), or "AAA" workers...

BACKGROUND: Despite recognition of the adverse impacts of the mistreatment of women during pregnancy, labour and birth, there remains limited evidence on interventions that could reduce mistreatment and build a culture of respectful maternity care (RMC) in health facilities. The sustainability of effective individual interventions and their adaptability to various global contexts remain uncertain. In this systematic review, we aimed to synthesise the best available evidence that has been shown to be effective in reducing the mistreatment of women and/or enhancing RMC during women's maternity care in health facilities...

BACKGROUND: Midwives' authorization to deliver the seven basic emergency obstetric and newborn care (BEmONC) functions is a core policy indicator in global monitoring frameworks, yet little evidence supports whether such data are captured accurately, or whether authorization demonstrates convergence with midwives' skills and actual provision of services.
