While collagen type I (Col-I) is commonly used as a structural component of biomaterials, collagen type III (Col-III), another fibril forming collagen ubiquitous in many soft tissues, has not previously been used. In the present study, the novel concept of an injectable hydrogel with semi-interpenetrating polymeric networks of heterotypic collagen fibrils, with tissue-specific Col-III to Col-I ratios, in a glycol-chitosan matrix was investigated. Col-III was introduced as a component of the novel hydrogel, inspired by its co-presence with Col-I in many soft tissues, its influence on the Col-I fibrillogenesis in terms of diameter and mechanics, and its established role in regulating scar formation...

INTRODUCTION: We compared right and left ventricular cardiac output (RVCO and LVCO) in fetuses of diabetic mothers (FDM) to a large normal cohort. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 264 normal fetuses and 30 FDM. Fetal CO parameters: semilunar valve velocity time integrals (AVVTI, PVVTI), ventricular outflow diameters (LVOTD, RVOTD), stroke volumes (AVSV, PVSV) were measured, and LVCO and RVCO calculated.  These were normalized using nonlinear regression to estimated fetal weight (EFW) to provide means and standard deviations...

Aims: We assessed the geometry of transcatheter heart valve (THV) and valve function associated with SAPIEN 3 implantation in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) stenosis. Methods and results: We included 280 consecutive patients who had a contrast computed tomography (CT) before and after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in our institution. Each THV was assessed by CT at five cross-sectional levels: inflow, annulus, mid, sinus, and outflow. The geometry of THV was assessed for eccentricity (1 - minimum diameter/maximum diameter) and expansion (CT derived external valve area/nominal external valve area)...

Pulmonary hypertension is associated with increased mortality and morbidity in the elderly population. Heart failure is a common cause of pulmonary hypertension. Yet, the relation between left heart parameters reflective of subclinical cardiac dysfunction and increased filling pressures, and pulmonary arterial pressures in the elderly population remains elusive. Within the population-based Rotterdam Study, 2592 unselected participants with a mean age of 72.6 years (61.4% women) had complete echocardiography data available...

Papillary ibroelastomas are small benign intracardiac tumors known for their embolic potential. Since the introduction of echocardiography with improved resolution and transesophageal imaging techniques, they are being increasingly detected in clinical practice. In recent series, papillary fibroelastoma is considered the most frequent benign tumor of the heart. Our objective was to analyze characteristics and midterm surgical outcome of histologically-confirmed cases of papillary fibroelastoma. We conducted a retrospective study on patients with cardiac tumors submitted to surgical excision between June 1992 and February 2017...

BACKGROUND: Aortic regurgitation is a prevalent, detrimental complication of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). The altered hemodynamics of LVADs results in aortic valves (AVs) having distinct mechanical stimulation. Our hypothesis was that the altered AV hemodynamics modulates the valve cells and matrix, resulting in changes in valvular mechanical properties that then can lead to regurgitation. METHODS: AVs were collected from 16 LVAD and 6 non-LVAD patients at time of heart transplant...

BACKGROUND: In patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), complications including progressive aortic stenosis and aortic dilatation develop over time. The morphology of cusp fusion is one of the determinants of the type and severity of these complications. We present the association of morphology of cusp fusion in BAV patients with distinctive genetic syndromes. METHODS: The Mayo Clinic echocardiography database was retrospectively reviewed to identify patients (age ≤ 22 years) diagnosed with BAV from 1990 to 2016...

The decellularization of biological tissues decreases immunogenicity, allows repopulation with cells, and may lead to improved long-term performance after implantation. Freeze drying these tissues would ensure off-the-shelf availability, save storage costs, and facilitates easy transport. This study evaluates the in vivo performance of freeze-dried decellularized heart valves in juvenile sheep. TritonX-100 and sodium dodecylsulfate decellularized ovine and porcine pulmonary valves (PV) were freeze-dried in a lyoprotectant sucrose solution...

INTRODUCTION: The coronary arterial system has been the subject of greater investigation than its venous system due to the importance of human coronary artery disease. With the advent of new percutaneous treatments, the anatomy of the coronary venous system has increasing relevancy. We compared the organization of the coronary venous circulation in three species commonly used in research and compared these to normal humans using both macroscopic anatomic and angiographic studies. ANIMALS: The anatomy of five explanted hearts from healthy dogs, pigs, and sheep were studied macroscopically, and 10 explanted hearts per animal species and 10 clinically normal human were examined by angiography...

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common congenital heart defect. BAV is associated with aortic stenosis and insufficiency, and aortic dilation in adult groups, but data in pediatric groups are limited. We sought to assess the impact of BAV morphology on aortic valve disease and aortic dilation in pediatric patients. We performed a retrospective review of all echocardiograms in patients with isolated BAV who were followed at our institution from July 2002 to July 2012. BAV morphology, aortic valve stenosis and/or insufficiency, and aortic dimensions were measured manually...

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has emerged as a viable treatment modality for patients with severe aortic valve stenosis and multiple co-morbidities. More recent indications include the use of transcatheter heart valves (THV) to treat degenerated bioprosthetic surgical heart valves (SHV), which are failing due to stenosis or regurgitation. Valve-in-valve (VIV) procedures in the aortic position have been performed with a variety of THV devices, although the balloon-expandable SAPIEN valve platform (Edwards Lifesciences Ltd, Irvine, CA, USA) and self-expandable CoreValve platform (Medtronic Inc...
