OBJECTIVE: Sleep quality in those with cardiovascular disease is significantly lower than in the general population. This study aimed to explore the effect of transcatheter or surgical closure of atrial septal defect (ASD) on sleep quality. METHODS: One hundred nineteen adult patients with ASD who underwent transcatheter or surgical closure were included in the study. Sleep quality was investigated prospectively just before defect closure and six months after defect closure...

BACKGROUND: Left atrial appendage (LAA) closure is an alternative to chronic anticoagulation for stroke prevention in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Multiple devices were used for LAA closure, with the Amplatzer Amulet LAA Occluder (Abbott, Chicago, IL, USA) and Watchman device (Boston Scientific, Marlborough, MA, USA) being the most commonly used in clinical practice. In August 2021, the FDA approved the use of the Amplatzer Amulet LAA Occluder. There is still a knowledge gap in the safety profile of the Amplatzer Amulet LAA Occluder device in comparison to the Watchman device...

BACKGROUND: Invasive haemodynamics are often performed for initiating and guiding pulmonary artery hypertension therapy. Little is known about the predictive value of invasive haemodynamic indices for long-term outcomes in children with pulmonary artery hypertension. We aimed to evaluate invasive haemodynamic data to help predict outcomes in paediatric pulmonary artery hypertension. METHODS: Patients with pulmonary artery hypertension who underwent cardiac catheterisation (2006-2019) at a single centre were included...

Circulating steroids, including sex hormones, can affect cardiac development and function. In mammals, steroid sulfatase (STS) is the enzyme solely responsible for cleaving sulfate groups from various steroid molecules, thereby altering their activity and water solubility. Recent studies have indicated that Xp22.31 genetic deletions encompassing STS (associated with the rare dermatological condition X-linked ichthyosis), and common variants within the STS gene, are associated with a markedly elevated risk of cardiac arrhythmias, notably atrial fibrillation/flutter...

An outborn male term neonate presented with a complaint of respiratory distress since birth on day 9 of life. On examination, baby was having tachypnoea, tachycardia and hepatomegaly. The baby was delivered at term gestation and cried immediately after birth. The chest X-ray showed cardiomegaly. The abdomen ultrasound showed a complex cystic vascular lesion suggestive of hepatic haemangioma. The echocardiography showed an atrial septal defect. The baby was initially treated conservatively along with specific treatment (steroids and propranolol) for haemangioma for 6 weeks...

OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study sought to determine the feasibility of transcatheter atrial septal defect device closure in patients less than 15 kg, as well as to assess complication rates and the reasons for unsuccessful device closure. BACKGROUND: In general, the risks associated with transcatheter atrial septal defect device closure are believed and reported to be relatively low, but the evidence stems from trials involving adults and older children. Current guidelines do not recommend atrial defect closure in device closure in children <15 kg, due to limited data available for feasibility and safety of device closure in this group of patients...

BACKGROUND: Recognition of right-to-left shunt is crucial in the work-up of patients with suspected patent foramen ovale (PFO) or atrial septal defect (ASD). While transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) remains the gold standard diagnostic tool for the anatomic assessment of PFO/ASD, transcranial Doppler (TCD) and contrast-enhanced transthoracic echocardiogram (CE-TTE) hold the promise of providing minimally invasive yet accurate clinical details. Their comparative accuracy remains however debated...

BACKGROUND: Double chambered right ventricle is a rare congenital heart disease that is characterised by the presence of an anomalous muscle bundle that divides the right ventricle into a low pressure superior (distal) chamber and a high pressure inferior (proximal) chamber. It is found in association with a ventricular septal defect in 90% cases with other associations being tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of great vessels, atrial septal defect and Ebstein's anomaly. On the other hand, subaortic membrane is a form of discrete subaortic stenosis that is characterised by a membranous diaphragm in the subvalvular location of the left ventricular outflow tract...

A variety of surgical approaches exist to treat aortic coarctation in neonates and infants. Our institutional approach is designed to match the surgical approach to the individual anatomy of the patient. The objective of this study is to evaluate operative characteristics and outcomes of all neonates and infants who underwent surgical repair of coarctation of the aorta or hypoplastic aortic arch at University of Florida from 2006 to 2021, inclusive, either in isolation or with concomitant repair of atrial septal defect (ASD) and/or ventricular septal defect (VSD)...

Holt-Oram syndrome comprises a rare spectrum of congenital cardiovascular and appendicular skeletal anomalies. However, only a few cases have reported lung involvement in Holt-Oram syndrome. We reported the rare case of a 1-year-old male child patient who presented with upper limb abnormalities and respiratory distress and was diagnosed with pulmonary agenesis and pulmonary arterial hypertension secondary to an atrial septal defect.

We report the case of a 9-year-old male with severe congenital pulmonary valve stenosis referred to our centre for percutaneous valvotomy. On admission, trans-thoracic echocardiogram confirmed a unicuspid pulmonary valve with a peak/mean pulmonary valve gradient of 91/53 mmHg and a pulmonary annulus of 13.8 mm (-0.8 Z Score). It also showed an enlarged RV (RV/LV ratio 0,9). During cardiac catheterisation, an additional atrial septal defect (secundum) with significant left to right shunt (Qp/Qs > 2) was diagnosed, which was not amenable to percutaneous closure...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of surgical treatment of mitral valve disease is to reverse heart failure and to restore life expectancy and quality of life (QoL). In mitral valve surgery, QoL has not been studied extensively, especially regarding the surgical approach. The current study aimed to evaluate QoL after mitral valve surgery through full sternotomy and a minimally invasive approach (MIMVS). METHODS: All patients undergoing mitral valve surgery between 2013-2018 through sternotomy or a MIMVS approach (right anterolateral mini-thoracotomy, sternal-sparing), with or without concomitant tricuspid valve surgery, surgical ablation, or atrial septal defect closure were eligible for inclusion in this multicentre nationwide registry in the Netherlands...
